The Giants are firing offensive coordinator Jason Garrett (Twitter link via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News). For now, Browns head coach and current offensive assistant Freddie Kitchens will assume play-calling duties.
Things haven’t gone according to plan for the Giants this year. Now at 3-7, their Garrett-lead offense has managed just 42 touchdowns — the lowest total of any team in the NFL. Still, just seven short weeks ago, head coach Joe Judge dismissed the speculation over Garrett’s job security.
“We’re going to stay consistent with what we’re doing and keep improving as a team,” Judge said in early October. “There’s a lot of things we’ve got to clean up coaching-wise, execution-wise. We’re going to stay on track with it and make sure we get those things right before we make any radical changes.”
Those comments came after the Giants’ 0-3 start to the season. Since then, they’ve managed wins over the Saints, Panthers, and Raiders, but that wasn’t enough to save Garrett’s job. As demonstrated by the dismissal of offensive line coach Marc Colombo last year, Judge isn’t afraid to make a midseason shakeup.
Many called for Garrett’s job last year, when the Giants posted the second-lowest point total in the NFL. Still, the G-Men retained the Princeton grad, largely because they didn’t want Daniel Jones to have to adapt to a third OC in his third pro season. And, though Garrett has been heavily criticized for his scheme and play-calling, Jones has performed well at times this year.
Of course, that wasn’t the case on Monday night. Jones lobbed two interceptions and completed just 60% of his throws as the Bucs cruised to a 30-10 victory. It was a new low for the Giants, who posted just 215 yards and 15 first downs while going 1-for-9 on third downs — that last part may have been the final nail in Garrett’s coffin as coordinator.
For now, Kitchens will inherit an offense averaging just 18.9 points and 322.8 yards per game. His first assignment comes this Sunday when the Giants host the Eagles in New Jersey.
darn it
*former* Browns head coach
exactly. we don’t want him back lol.
Look who wrote the article nobody is shocked there’s errors in it. Fire Zach links been saying it for months
I think you meant Browns former head coach
Hey it s Cleveland, maybe they desperately want out! Haha
Maybe being Browns HC is like being President. Once you get the job, you get the title forever.
They could still possibly be paying him, so..,,
It’s a start. Now let’s can Gettleman, Judge, and Mara (I know that’s not possible)
Yup! Why stop at Garrette. Keep cutting.
Gettleman isn’t going anywhere
They will definitely win 3-4 games down the stretch (their schedule is weak) and save Gettleman’s job.
Gettleman will retire much like Coughlin did. The organization respects him and will offer him a save face option
Joe Judge should show himself the door and stop scapegoating
I’m sure there will be a lot of teary eyes over this.
Freddie kitchens calling the plays is going to be even worse
About damn time. Gettleman next please
Nice mask lul
It took the Giants less than 2 seasons to figure out what Jerrah couldn’t figure out in almost 15. Coach Carrot is no offensive genius. He’ll be back in Big D as a “special assistant” or with a “quality control” gig next year of not sooner. Jerrah can’t quit this dude. Wait and see.
**clap**
Well now we see if Daniel Jones is the problem or if Garrett was the problem.
Offensive line was/is the problem. You can’t teach talent.
But not Judge?
How about a QB coach? No improvement in their savior in 3 years
Man, is it even legal to be a head coach for 1 team and offensive coordinator for another? What happens if the 2 teams play each other? Does this now open the door for players to play for multiple teams? Tom Brady gonna be full time qb for all 32 teams now, to make sure he wins every SB until the end of time.
Happy with this. His play calling was predictable, unimaginative, and stuck in the past. First down, two yard pass. Second and long, draw play. Third and long, a pass attempt that is two yards short of the first down line. Repeat for the rest of the game, week in and week out.
Gettleman 100 percent will be fired no matter what happens. He will not be making the most important draft picks in the history of the giants with two top 10 picks maybe 1 in the top 5 and 5 picks in first three rounds. Not happening!
May as well trade those first round picks away now. If the Giants are going to be throwing darts at the board with their eyes closed (Gettleman) better to have a lot of picks.
Kitchens i feel will let loose the last 7 games. Nothing to lose at this point. Let jones shine or fail but let him loose. Not jones fault giants have 1 offensive lineman and receivers who are either overrated or not playing up to potential. Plus a dline with 0 pass rush. Giants can win with jones. Just look at cardinals no kyler murray and mccoy wins. Got a great d and way better oline then giants. Look at russ in seattle under siege and cabt get anything going. Falls on gettleman and he will be fired
Why is solder playing over peart at this point? No one could be worse the solder who got abused all night last night. You could put a statue of Medusa there and it would do better then solder. If yiu are telling me peart is that bad its an indictment on gettleman drafting once again and shows he got to go. Ximines carter trading up for deandre baker drafting jones at 6 when be could of traded down 4 or 5 spots.
That contract was one of the worst in my memory. Not Haynesworth level (nothing really is), but it was pretty bad.
Is Jones truly the future QB. Would the Giants consider trading both number ones for Russell Wilson?
@mlbnyyfan First question, maybe. Second question, of course, but that won’t get it done in today’s NFL. Keep adding. Like a lot.
Very well. Both firsts AND a conditional sixth-rounder.
No way in heck. Who is your oline then?
How do you fire an owner? The NJ Giants need a fresh start as a franchise at this point.
Terrible hire in the first place. Gettleman must go,as well.
I always laugh how these two things are completely underrated because they don’t touch the ball.
1. Coaching. Coaching is everything. Scheme design, knowing your opponent and how to beat them. Personnel groupings, playcalling.
2. Offensive Line. Not having a functional line. Nothing else works. Nothing. Giants line has sucked since SB 46.
Great post. No sarcasm.
The Giants have been over-estimating their offensive talent for the last three years.
It’s the last ten plus years, actually. In 2009, they had arguably the best line in the league and then coasted on that until all five of those starters (plus Snee) were gone by 2013. Their drafting since 2014:
2014 – 2nd rounder on Weston Richburg
2015 – 1st (Flowers), 7th (Bobby Hart)
2016 – None
2017 – 6th (Adam Bisnoway, did not make the team)
2018 – 2nd (Will Hernandez)
2019 – 7th (George Asafo-Adjei)
2020 – 1st (Andrew Thomas), 3rd (Peart) , 5th (Lemeiux)
2021 – None
Eight drafts, only 4-5 guys drafted who were expected to have any impact, and it’s weighted a by 2020. 2020 was a response to 2016-2019, when over FOUR drafts, they took ONE lineman above the 6th round. Just abysmal decision making.
Good mini-breakdown, rct. I agree with the above.
Too bad they don’t fire the real culprit Gutterman. How does a team in NY screw it up so badly. What a place to have a team and both the Jets/Giants do their best.
Thank God they finally fired the clapper. I agree with most of the comments listed above. Garrett’s offense was from the 90’s and defenses have figured it out years ago. His route progressions were sub par, and required the QB to only have a primary read.
Also, from what I’m hearing the coaches would put together a game plan and come game time Garrett would revert to his safe play calling and abandon the game plan. This would infuriate the HC. But since Garrett was so well liked by ownership no action would be taken against him. It wasn’t until this last debacle that it became unbearable.
Now let’s see if the playmakers get more involved and a proper scheme is put in place to help the OL.
he will be back in Dallas soon! come on Jerry you need your yes man to help you lose games!
As a Cowboys’ fan, I couldn’t stand his in-game ‘managing’: adjust headset, spit, repeat, clap…
I was honestly shocked when he was hired as OC by the Giants. The Cowboys were awful without Prescott and never did anything to adapt for the personnel available.
