Andrew Billings passed through waivers today, but the defensive tackle has already found his next gig. Billings is set to sign with the Dolphins, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter).
Billings was a fourth-round pick by the Bengals in 2016, and it didn’t take him every long to establish himself as a starter. He started 30 of his 32 games between the 2018 and 2019 seasons, collecting a total of 3.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and 11 QB hits.
The defensive tackle joined the Browns during the 2020 offseason, but he chose to opt out of the subsequent season. Billings ended up seeing time in only six games for Cleveland this season, collecting a single tackle. He was ultimately waived by the organization on Saturday.
Now, the 26-year-old will have a chance to kick start his career in Miami. Per Rapoport, the veteran will initially start on the practice squad, but he’s expected to be promoted to the active roster relatively quickly.
I really liked Billings coming out of college. He never ended up being a superstar, but he ended up being solid in Cincy before not working out in Cleveland. Maybe he’ll recapture some of that form in Miami-the Dolphins could use it along the interior of that line.
If I’m remembering right Billings had an injury concern coming out of college or else he likely would have been drafted much higher. He was certainly solid enough as a Bengal from what I saw.
Solid rotational player at an important position. I’m surprised no one claimed him. If he’s the last guy coming off your bench, you’re looking ok.
BILLINGS is a MONTANA of a Man !!
Why on earth didn’t the Steelers nab this guy…
Salary cap issues.
They have $10M+ in cap space…so no.
I suppose they were concerned about his fit in a 3-4. If I had to guess, that is. Seems like a logical inquiry to me.
Because Big Ben is toast and the season is pointless so why bother
Because he’s 26 and if he works out and can play NT effectively in a 3-4 you can re-sign him To replace an aging Alualu for the following 3-4 years without wasting the team’s limited draft capital they’ll need to obtain a young quarterback?
