It’s officially official. On Friday morning, the Browns announced that they have released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
[RELATED: OBJ Made Multiple Trade Requests]
“After careful consideration, internal discussions, and conversations with Odell and his representation, we’ve determined that it is in the best interest of all parties involved that Odell no longer play for the Cleveland Browns,” GM Andrew Berry said in a statement issued by the team. “We appreciate all his efforts and contributions while in Cleveland, but we’ve just reached a point where it is best that we move forward as a team without Odell. We are finalizing the process of granting Odell his release and we wish him well as he continues his career.”
Despite Berry’s diplomacy, it’s safe to say that the Browns are not huge fans of Beckham or his contributions. OBJ won’t be leaving Cleveland with fond memories either. After two-and-a-half seasons and 29 total games, he’ll leave with 114 catches and 1,586 yards, good for an average of 13.9 yards per reception. He scored just seven receiving touchdowns along the way, with per-game averages of 3.9 grabs and 54.7 yards per contest.
But, before he relocated to Ohio, Beckham was an absolute monster in New York. OBJ topped 1,300 yards in each of his first three seasons, including a career-high 1,450 yards in 2015. And, after his lost 2017 season, he still managed 77 catches, 1,052 yards, and six touchdowns in a 12-game 2018.
The Browns gave up 2019 first- and third-round picks, plus Jabrill Peppers and Kevin Zeitler, to acquire the star receiver and defensive end Olivier Vernon. He stayed healthy that year, but turned in his worst full season as a pro with 74 receptions, 1,035 yards, and four TDs. Now, that stands as his most productive season in Cleveland.
The rest of the league will have until 4pm ET/3pm CT Monday to claim Beckham. If he goes unclaimed, Beckham will be an unfettered free agent.
*ring ring*
“Hey, Odell it’s Aaron Rodgers….”
to voice mail, I’m talking to Tom Brady presently….
“Sorry Tom, I’m mad because I couldn’t get the ball in Cleveland. How am I going to get my consistent touches with Evans, Godwin, AB, Gronk and Fournette??” Lol
Tom’s reply: care more about getting the ball than winning, huh?
“…yes”
Tom: *click*
“Tom? Tom, you there?”
Good riddance diva. Time to go celebrate with a bunch of half naked men on a party boat…
Would that be Tom Brady’s new $6MM yacht?
Bill, I don’t often beg you to sign players but for the love of God please sign OBJ. Agholor isn’t gonna cut it. Pats should be allllllllll over this.
As much as having OBJ would be a nightmare… I’m pretty sure the Pats can afford him and he’d be a bonafide WR1. He could recoup some value for the rest of the season and has an outside shot at playoffs. He’d absolutely get his touches in NE (if he can pick up the playbook quickly) and moving the entire WR corps down a slot might actually make each of them better while getting Harry off the field. The Pats signed AB and Ochocinco in the past so there’s precedent there. But also if the Pats didn’t sign him, I wouldn’t be mad either. It’d make CLE look real bad if he went to NE and shined with rookie QB. I’d also temper expectations that’d he’d be OBJ of old but I would expect him to be better than what NE currently has.
Why would he be a nightmare on the Patriots? They’d just cut him if he was a problem.
He’s not a bonafide 1. You and Odell might be the only two confident that he is a WR1. I wouldn’t touch this guy but he seems like a Raider to me.
Yup………….Sign him and get his whiney ass dad as a bonus………
I hope he signs with the Raiders. There is a definite need on our end and we seem to be able to throw the ball downfield. It would be the perfect chance for him to get back to WR1 form if he’s got it left in him. Plus, Derek Carr is just one of those QB’s that seems to get the most out of his guys, obviously aside from AB and Ruggs (although Ruggs failure was off the field.)
Are you implying Ruggs was good ON the field?
Over 20 career games, 50 receptions 921 yards and 4 TD’s. Sure, he’s fast, but couldn’t get open and catch the ball!
For comparisons sake; Jerry Jeudy, 18 games, 62 receptions 967 yards 3 TD’s. Ceedee Lamb, 23 games 113 receptions, 1544 yards 9 TD’s. Hell, Ja’Marr Chase through 8 games has 38/786/7!!
I mean, he hasn’t been as effective as those other receivers you mentioned, but he was definitely starting to turn a corner this year. He was on pace for a 1000 yard season prior to his idiotic behavior
Almost 1200 yards. He looked to be blossoming. To bad he’s an A-hole
Cue the “hey, my team should sign him! We need him!!” …..
Qew the I need attention and am treating this site as if it’s Instagram comment
‘Qew’?? Lol.
Ceueue
Cue*** the ignorant a$$ who can’t spell and sees the need to be a d*uche
*kyew
Kew
He’s on waivers so worst team has first dibs
If only Matt Millen was still calling shots in Detroit. He’d think obj was the 3rd (or 4th?) coming of the greatest wr ever.
Of course, he probably would have traded Detroit’s next 3 full drafts for Julio Jones this past summer too.
Falcons are probably the most logical destination seeing who’s left after Ridley took off
He probably ends up with the Patriots on a one-year deal like Antonio Brown.
If his salary will be at or near the veteran minimum for 2022/2023 after signing bonus conversion, Lions would be stupid not to claim him.
I disagree. Any team that does claim him WOULD be stupid
It would be no risk for a rebuilding franchise with no receivers… Wouldnt hurt to give him a look.
Wouldn’t that be counter productive? At 0-8 it appears they are in tank mode, but maybe OBJ is that missing piece…
They can sign him, deactivate him the first 2 games, stash him on the covid/close contact list a couple weeks, then suspend him and top it off by releasing him the day before their week 17 game. No sense taking a chance he actually makes a catch, and all the defenders accidentally push him into the end zone.
I really really hope my team stays FAR away. We don’t need whiny-ass players on our team. And Cleveland is so much better off now.
Man it would suck if the Browns go on an win like they did last year after he got hurt. Maybe Baker’s Dad could put a video together of WR catching the ball and making plays in the playoffs.
When did the Browns ‘go on an win’ after he got hurt last year? They were 5-2 with him and 6-3 without him. But don’t let facts get in the way of your whining.
And the offense went from averaging 27.2 points per game in his six full games to 24.5 points in the 10 games he missed either completely or almost completely.
Ok Texans. It’s up to you. Claim him!! That’s the best possible outcome here.
One thing is for sure…he’ll be unhappy and a cancer in the locker room wherever he goes. Once a self-centered diva, always a self-centered diva
Signing this douchepickle is like asking to be injected with cancer. He’s over.
The second part was too far and not funny, but +1 for your correct use of ‘douchepickle”.
Like “douchepickle.” Gotta add that one to my non-profane insults.
Ravens will land him
He got what he wants….better ball out now
So they get nothing for him?
Giants return
New England will make a move!
As he left the facility he tried to take a few balls but dropped than after taking a step.
He’s got a drop rate of only 4.2% over the last four years, which doesn’t seem to be that bad, and has averaged one fumble every 63.4 touches in his career, but has only three over the last five seasons.
