Matt Nagy‘s job appears to be safe — for now. The Bears are unlikely to fire their head coach before the end of the season, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (Twitter link).

Rumors of Nagy’s imminent firing were rampant last week, with one report suggesting that he would be dismissed after the Thanksgiving Day game against the Lions. For his part, Nagy says such talk “is not accurate,” though he canceled the Bears’ scheduled meetings Tuesday afternoon. And, as of Tuesday, Nagy said he had yet to speak with owner George McCaskey, team president Ted Phillips, or GM Ryan Pace about his status.
“We all have our own decisions as to how we do things, and I think this whole entire time, for me and for ownership, we’ve had great communication,” said Nagy when asked about the recent lack of clarity from the Bears’ top brass. “[We’re] focused on Detroit. That’s what it is.”
On Wednesday, McCaskey told players and coaches that Nagy would not get a pink slip for Thanksgiving. Still, barring a total 180, it’d be a surprise to see him return in 2022. Indeed, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports hears that change could be inevitable.
Around this time last year, we were hearing that it was more likely than not that Nagy would be fired at the end of the 2020 campaign. While ownership ultimately elected to give its HC one more chance to right the ship, the Bears’ struggles this season are probably too much for him to overcome.
The good news for Chicago is that many offensive-minded coaches view rookie QB Justin Fields as a quality passer that they can build around. So the club, which is expected to consider popular candidates like Tampa Bay OC Byron Leftwich, New England OC Josh McDaniels, and Buffalo OC Brian Daboll, might be able to land its top target. However, Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald, whom the Bears have coveted for some time, remains uninterested in the post.
Meanwhile, although we recently heard that Pace might not be fired at season’s end, La Canfora notes that his status is very much up in the air as well.

Extend Nagy! 5 year deal!
Must be a Packers fan
On the one hand, unless they have an assistant they want to audition for the HC job, they might as well ride it out. In the other, it can’t be easy playing for a probable lame duck.
I’m just enjoying hearing the fire Nagy chants at other events. I expected the chants at Bulls or Blackhawks games but not at a AEW show. Hilarious
Hilarious? Not to Nagy, or to his wife and family, maybe especially not to his son who had to listen to jerks call for his father’s firing while he (the son) was playing in a high school football game. How can you be so callous?
Easily, he chose the job and he could resign if he doesn’t like the well deserved criticism that comes from doing a very public profession poorly. As long as it remains harmless chants and does not escalate I have no issue with fans calling for much needed change. Fans don’t usually have much voice when it comes to the cheap incompetent ownership, boycotts rarely work but you know what does work? Public embarrassment, and since the Bears organization is clearly ok with the embarrassment on the field maybe chanting “fire Nagy” at every event in Chicago will do it.
You must not have any kids. If you do, ask them what they’d think if that happened to them.
Don’t suck at your job so profoundly that happens to you. Simple. You BS your way into the door at Halas hall and now that the world has seen through your BS and you aren’t the person you said you were. What else is left ? Hold him accountable.
It is not hilarious at all. Its pathetic
most dysfunctional ownership in nfl….please sell the team
Ever hear of Dan Synder in DC?
Bears aren’t firing Nagy because news got out. Simple as that.
Or it could be that one of the thousand jerk off “reporters” in Chicago wanted his 5 minutes.
So I didn’t watch a single football play all day. Bears make me puke, I hate the Cowboys with a passion, And there was absolutely no reason for someone from Chicago to watch Buffalo vs NO. I actually enjoyed the day and plan to continue moving forward. I did hear the Bears managed to save the playoff hopes with a last second FG. I’m sure Nagy will put some manure on it and serve it up to the press all week and next. Awesome.
Sorry, “hot seat” would mean his job is in jeopardy. If this pathetic club chooses to the stay the course (which I’m sure they will), that seat seems pretty “cold” to me. God I hate this organization.
Not a Bears fan and could care less either way with Nagy but I ask, is it Nagy’s fault the players aren’t producing or the organization/Pace’s fault for not getting/paying the right players?
When every QB struggles with your offense, I doubt it’s the players fault.
Its on Pace
Yes
Nah Justin Fields gotta go with Nagy when they fire Nagy. I mean, they basically let Trubisky walk because they thought Trubisky was the problem. Turns out it was Nagy this whole time and we’ve drafted a bust QB from OSU, for whom have performed far worse than Trubisky. To get Fields was definitely a downgrade from Trubisky because Fields can’t read plays well enough to throw the ball before getting sacked or running around like a chicken with its head chopped off.
Fields is HORRIBLE. They better clean up house and trade away bad draft picks, starting with Fields. The owner selling the team would be a pipe dream at this point but if the owners want to see the Bears win another ‘ship while Virginia is still alive, they would sell the team to an owner or group of owners who cares about winning, not making profits.
