Deshaun Watson is still on the Houston Texans, but team chairman and CEO Cal McNair insinuated that the trade winds could change on a dime. While McNair wouldn’t rate the team’s chances of trading Watson before the November 2nd trade deadline, he did say the situation is fluid and “day-to-day.”
“We’ll just wait and see,” McNair told Aaron Wilson of SportsTalk790. “It’s a day-to-day thing. Nick is in charge of that, so we’ll see how that works out.”
Watson’s initial trade request partly stemmed from the team’s hiring of general manager Nick Caserio and coach David Culley, with the quarterback citing a lack of communication during the process. McNair was asked about the awkward position his GM and HC have been put in, noting they’ve “made the very best of it.”
“I think they’ve been put in a very tough spot, a spot that is not of their choosing and they’ve made the very best of it and sort of worked through it day to day,” McNair said. “So, we’ll see where it goes.”
Meanwhile, a new suitor could emerge in the Watson sweepstakes. While the Dolphins remain the favorite to acquire the quarterback, “some GMs believe the Saints could emerge as a darkhorse,” according to CBS’s Jason La Canfora (and passed along by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald on Twitter). Meanwhile, La Canfora reiterated that the Eagles aren’t in play for the 26-year-old.
The 2-2 Saints haven’t necessarily struggled to find the end zone, and they’re middle-of-the-road with scoring. While Jameis Winston has done an admirable job filling in for Drew Brees, the Saints also rank toward the bottom of the league in both completions and attempts. The team is clearly keeping Winston on a tight leash, and Watson would provide the Saints with a better chance to replicate the high-powered offense they had for more than a decade.
Filling in for Drew Brees? Do you expect him back?
‘the Saints also rank toward the bottom of the league in both completions and attempts.’
So in other words, they’re running a ton and not passing that much. So it’s not Winston’s fault, but the play calling? Maybe they should ask him to air it out before moving on from him. He clearly has no problem throwing it 40 times a game; I’m not sure why they’re throwing so infrequently.
Well when Winston throws a lot it tends to be to the other team. Nobody in the nfl should have Winston throw 40+ times a game. That’s a recipe for disaster.
Winston loves Crab legs
And W’s.
I’m not saying they should have him throw 40+ times a game, just that he should be throwing more. Clearly throwing it 21.5 times a game, which he’s doing now, ain’t working. They’re treating it like he can’t throw a lot when he can.
Also, his career INT% is 3.4. Him tossing interceptions is slightly exaggerated. When he threw 30 INT, he attempted 626 passes.
Comparison purposes, career INT%:
Favre – 3.3
Peyton Manning – 2.7
Eli Manning – 3.0
Dan Marino – 3.0
John Elway – 3.1
etc. Most successful QBs in the last 15 or so years are around 2.0-2.5. So he’s not great but he’s not far off. Winston isn’t to blame for their lack of scoring, imo.
Let me also add that the year (2019) Winston threw it 40 times a game and had 30 interceptions, the Bucs were 3rd in the league in scoring.
So saying ‘nobody should have Winston throw 40+ times a game’ and calling it a ‘recipe for disaster’ is wrong. It worked (28.6 points per game). It’s just that their defense gave up the 3rd most points in the league, so they lost a lot of games.
That’s ridiculous. They finished 7-9 that year because he was AWFUL.
He lost the 49ers game week 1(threw a pick 6 late in the game)
Threw 2INTS vs the titans in a 4 pt lost
Threw 5INTS vs the panthers
Threw 4INTS vs the saints
Threw 4INTS in a 3pt Lost vs Texas
Threw 2INTS vs falcons including the INT walk off
They scored points because they trailed a lot because he was a boneheaded. Saints are making him a game manager because it’s best for him and the team. I watched him in 19 because I lived in Tampa at the time. He was AWFUL. end of story.
The defense was top 10 in the league in yards allowed per play the year he threw 30 INTs.
You looked at the statistics you wanted for your argument without looking at the ones that contradict it. The reason the Bucs were an easy choice for a SB potential team swapping Jameis for Brady was largely because their defense was giving up points based on field position, not because they were bad.
Just to point out some very pertinent stats in regards to Tampa’s defense in 2019. 6th in yards per play allowed. 5th in turnovers. A net total of 20.23 points expected added by the defense which was one of only 8 teams to be in the positive in that category. They allowed 34% of 3rd downs to be converted. And tied for 6th in RZ defense.
They were 27th in TDs allowed and it’s not hard to connect the dots when you start in your own territory often.
Despite the 28.3 points per game, they ranked middle of the field in offensive points added. Just below Jared Goff and the Rams. Football Outsiders had TB average defensive drive start as 32nd.
So again, tell me how the defense was the problem in Tampa in 2019.
It didn’t help their defense that seven of those 30 INT’s were returned for touchdowns. Those took them from 9th worst defense to fourth worst.
Also the int% is USELESS. Those guys played in a different even when CBs could literally Close line WRs and nothing was called. So those numbers are baseless in your claim.
I wouldn’t call the INT % a completely useless stat for comparison’s sake, especially when you’re including the Mannings, who didn’t retire that long ago.
In other words – there was no news.
There is some news. The Texans haven’t acknowledged their stance changing publicly. That should count.
Latest on Deshaun Watson. He’s unavailable because he’s getting a ” Happy Ending” Massage. He had a couple of leftover coupons.
Borrowed them from Robert Kraft, did he?
Kraft just got to see Brady last week, he’s good for a while
Not all Saints are saints.
Clickbait
Watson will never play this year.
The Saints refuse to extend the field with Winston. Peyton’s play calling is what’s holding back this team.
