Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson underwent two surgeries to repair his right middle finger, per an announcement from the team. No timetable was given for his recovery, but the Seahawks say “it is highly anticipated that he will return to play later this season.”
“Russell Wilson injured his right middle finger during last night’s game versus the Rams,” the statement read. “He sustained two injuries to the finger: an extensor tendon rupture (mallet finger) and a comminuted fracture-dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint. He had successful surgery today in Los Angeles by hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin…to repair both injuries. He will start therapy this weekend and it is highly anticipated that he will return to play later this season.”
Dr. Shin echoed those sentiments, adding that he is “fully confident” that Wilson will return this year. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com initially reported that Wilson will be out for about six weeks (Twitter link), though Adam Schefter of ESPN.com hears that Wilson could miss as little as four weeks and could return for Seattle’s Week 10 matchup against the Packers.
One way or another, Wilson’s ironman streak will end at 149 games. The Seahawks will now turn things over to Geno Smith, beginning with their Week 6 tilt against the Steelers. After losing to the Rams, the 2-3 Seahawks are in last place in the NFC West.
Looking at the Seahawks schedule it’s pretty easy to see a lot of losses piling up minus Wilson at QB. It’ll be interesting to see if they can beat Jacksonville with Geno under center at the end of the month, though.
I disagree, Steelers, Saints, Jags, and Bye are winnable games for Geno. But if the D can’t cover (which hasn’t happened yet) they are gonna need Geno to step up and play like he did Thursday.
I don’t know, Steelers I could maybe be swayed to agree with you on if the Pittsburgh offense continues to struggle. I just can’t see Seattle beating N.O. without Russ though.
The other part is how will Geno do when teams are scheming all week to face him?
Pittsburgh actually didn’t look terrible for much of the Green Bay game. If Ben gets time, he can operate mostly well. The problem is getting time.
One thing going for Seattle, though, is how badly Pittsburgh’s line has been at opening up running lanes for Harris. Seattle’s run defense is pretty bad, but Pittsburgh has been completely unable to get anything going there and I don’t think that there’s much optimism that that will change during the season.
New Orleans is just an absolute wildcard to me. I’m not going to try to predict what they’ll do, because we’re seeing very different teams from them throughout the season. After all the Meyer drama, I think that Jags game is winnable for every team. The only chance Jacksonville really has is a rally after firing Meyer and the players getting some sort of trust in the team just a little bit.
Geno isn’t as bad as people think. I’m looking forward to seeing him for 4-6 games. I’ll be routing for him.
Russell is a tough dude. He was trying so hard to stay in that game and convince the Seahawks to let him keep playing.
Time to trade for Foles, Dalton or Mario’s?
No no and no
Bring Minshew back to Washington state
That would be intriguing, but the cost for that transaction might make it not worth it. I think you’d have to see how Smith does the next few games. If he’s awful, maybe you consider it. But if you do that, you’re essentially punting Smith next year. You wouldn’t give up a pick for a rental backup.
The only other advantage of such a transaction would be to leverage Minshew against another Wilson departure in the offseason, but I don’t think Seattle wants to do that and Wilson is still obviously playing very well.
