The Giants are off to an 0-3 start, and one of the biggest sources of angst for frustrated fans is offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. Second-year HC Joe Judge showed he wasn’t afraid of making an in-season firing when he sacked O-line coach Marc Colombo last November, but Judge is not ready to make a similar move just yet.
When asked about Garrett’s job security, Judge said, “[w]e’re going to stay consistent with what we’re doing and keep improving as a team. here’s a lot of things we’ve got to clean up coaching-wise, execution-wise. We’re going to stay on track with it and make sure we get those things right before we make any radical changes” (via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv).
Despite scoring the second-fewest points in the league in 2020, New York retained Garrett largely because the club did not want young QB Daniel Jones to have to adapt to a third OC in his third year in the league. And, though Garrett has been heavily criticized for his scheme and play-calling, Jones has performed well over the first three games of the season.
The No. 6 overall pick of the 2019 draft has completed over 65% of his passes for 782 yards and has thrown two touchdowns without throwing a pick. He has also rushed for two scores. His efforts represent one of the few bright spots in what is shaping up to be another disappointing year for the Giants.
Of course, if the team does not experience a major reversal of fortunes, then it would be shocking to see Garrett and GM Dave Gettleman brought back for 2022 (if they even make it to the end of this season). But for now, it sounds as if Garrett will keep his post for at least a while longer.
Jones might not be the answer, but Garrett’s timid and predictable play-calling are not doing him any favors. It doesn’t help to run an offense where even the people watching at home know what’s going to happen. Throw a 5-7 yard pass on first down, if it’s incomplete, then a run play on second and long. On third down, always run a quick curl pattern that cuts off a yard or two short of the first down marker. Repeat throughout the entire game.
On top of that, the offensive line is still really bad. They give Jones very little time in the passing game and their run-blocking is atrocious. Saquon gets hit within a yard of the line of scrimmage at an alarming rate.
All in all, they need to fire Garrett ASAP. If a new OC can’t breathe any life into this offense, then fire Judge as well. And Gettleman needs to be fired yesterday. He’s destroyed this team and made them the worst in the league over the last 4+ years.
What you described was the Giants game plan in the 70’s and 80’s even through Parcells. If it wasn’t for that defense (Marshall, carson, van pelt, Kelly, taylor) it would have been worse.
Funny how D Haskins is tossed aside as a bad pick, but Jones is getting chance after chance. ‘He was coached by the Manning’s and is tall so he must be good.’
It may not totally be his fault, but Jones will never play well enough to earn that big second contract from the Giants.
This is simple: despite how bad Jones has looked at times, Haskins looked way, way worse.
On top of that, Washington hired Ron Rivera after Haskins’ rookie year and Rivera had no desire to use him.
Even further, Haskins has work ethic issues and repeatedly broke COVID protocols.
They may have been taken in the same draft, but the similarities end there. Not a very good comparison.
To say I can’t compare the 2 QB’s taken in the same draft is silly. Why not? Both are terrible draft picks by NY & DC. Both Barkely & Jones broke Covid protocols last season.
Jones only attributes are he’s a big, strong armed QB coached by the same guy that coached the Mannings. That’s it.
Where did I say you ‘can’t’ compare them? Seriously, where? I just said it’s a bad comparison if you take even a cursory look at it and I laid out why. The two QBs have literally nothing to do with each other aside from being drafted in the same draft.
Again: Haskins is way worse, had a coach who didn’t want him from Day 1, and had a bad work ethic and ignored COVID protocols. Jones, on the other hand, is better, has a coach who wants him, and for whatever shortcomings his performance has shown by all accounts he’s one of the hardest working players on the team.
It’s a bad comparison, point blank. And what coach are you talking about that coached the Mannings? Joe Judge, Jason Garrett, and Jerry Schlupinski (QB coach) have been coaches the last two years and all have nothing to do with the Mannings.
Yeah, I don’t see much in common between Haskins and Jones either. Haskins was largely responsible for his own failures through his off-field decision-making. Jones’ issues haven’t been the same. He also has played much better.
Follow the game a bit more. Jones had the same college coach as both Mannings. David Cutcliffe coached all 3 in college. And one of Jones’ biggest selling points was having him for a coach, just like the Mannings.
He’s a terrible QB. And in 4th place yet again. But keep saying how much better he is than Haskins.
Haskins was terrible, Jones hasn’t been great but nothing like Haskins. Thats just a dumb comment
Jones is not a QB1 as they say. He’s terrible and turns the ball over non stop. Nothing more than a backup, just like Haskins. Same thing.
Okay arty, I respect you a lot but this is not a winning point here. There is literally no piece of evidence that supports the argument that Haskins was a better pick than Jones that exists at this time. As bad as you think Jones may be, the Giants have at least gotten multiple starts out of him. Not all backups are the same, as it stands-do you Taylor Heinicke is as valuable as Dwayne Haskins? What about Nick Foles? Or Jacoby Brissett? Gardner Minshew? This is not a black and white discussion here.
We obviously found that crappy scrub Haskins’ account on year, yeesh. Jones is better than Haskins in every way, not sure why you don’t understand that. I mean, it’s pretty simple.
Garrett predictability was his calling card along with ultra conservative play calling. Not surprisingly he’s run into similar problems in NY. Giants will end up with a total refit coaching before this gets righted.
There is nothing wrong with Daniel Jones whatsoever. This is his third year! He has had zero offensive line, he lost saquon all season last year, no consistency at receiver, and bad offensive play calling. You can win with him if you go out in the draft and get the best or 2nd best olineman and best or 2nd best dlineman
You might win with Jones playing behind a quality O line, but the borscht belt comic GM would rather get a bunch of shiny toys and gadgets rendered useless by his sieve of a line.
I dont watch the Giants enough to speak on Jones but the coach stinks because I do know what the results have been. If I was coaching and my team was 0-3, I would definitely make radical changes especially if my winning percentage was .316, which is terrible!
Fortunately, there are just 14 games left on Garrett’s tenure with the Giants.
The Giants aren’t playing all that badly today. Maybe the pressure amped up some players/coaches games?
Jones 350 yds 1 td another 2 pt conversion and some running. What a shock you give him weapons and time to throw what happens he produces. What can this offense be if theu figure out how to utilize everyone? Barkley golladay toney shepard slayton ross engram rudolph.
O line wasn’t bad today, either. Gave him some time.
Evan Engram giving his typical performance, though.
I think Jones is alright. Like a lot of people have been saying, that line is key to success. That’s Gettleman’s major failing: he hasn’t acquired good enough players on that front to make use of the other acquisitions he brought in. When it works though, the results are good for Jones-despite Garrett’s predictable playcalling.
This will probably sound crazy, but I would have to wait until the end of the year to decide if I would fire Gettleman. If this trend continues, then it just needs some linemen to be added. I’d like to jettison Garrett personally, might I’d want to wait until Jones is comfortable enough to have command of the offense himself so he doesn’t get too impacted by changing schemes again.
In my opinion, linemen are all NYG really need. Gettleman’s recent moves will look good after Jones gets time-if he continues to play well.
Barkley looked the best this week since his 2019 high ankle sprain. Was this his turning point?
The Saints must really SUCK to loose to the the looser Giants !!
