The Jets hit another low this past Sunday. Not only did they get blown out by their divisional rival, but they also lost rookie quarterback Zach Wilson for the next few weeks. While no one in New York is happy with the team’s 1-5 record, owner Woody Johnson told reporters that he continues to have faith in general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh.
“I’ve been around for, this is going on 22 years, with my little absence that I had recently, and this is a good group,” Johnson said (via ESPN’s Rich Cimini). “We will get it right. Last week, you know, [was] frustrating, but now we turn the page and we’re off to the Bengals.”
The Jets have struggled during Douglas’s two-plus seasons in New York, but he’s also put together the league’s youngest roster and has a clear vision for the future. This is Saleh’s first season at the helm, and even if the Jets finish with one of the worst records in the league, there’s practically no chance the team moves on from their head coach.
“Just talking to the leadership — Joe, Robert, and seeing how their plans are put together,” Johnson said. “How they’re deep thinkers, they want to do things like establish a culture and they’re getting the right players in the right positions.
“It’s just a very young team with a young quarterback. He’s 22 years old, he just turned 22. So he’s seeing things for the first time like a lot of the quarterbacks now, a lot of the young quarterbacks. It’s going to take him a little bit of time, but I have a lot of confidence in Zach, too.”
Robert Saleh was supposed to be a defensive messiah, but found out that life stinks without Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey.
Robert Saleh didn’t have Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, he was with the 49ers
Really don’t know where the commenters come from? Outer space? Of course you’re right!
Really dude?? Lol
You’re definitely high
Do you even watch football?
We’re not even halfway thru the season and the owner has to already assure the team he’s not firing the GM and HC??? It’s the f-cling Jets! They’re years away from being relevant. This is not new.
At this point it’s pretty clear that all the agonizing about whether or not to bring back Darnold was over-wrought. Darnold still isn’t very good and Jets could have Aaron Rodgers playing quarterback and still not be very good either.
There have been and will continue to be a lot of growing pains with this team, and I guess it’s good that Johnson recognizes that. New Yorkers can be an impatient bunch, but the right way for them to fix things is probably a slow and methodical one.
I don’t mean this in a bad way, but it helps that the Jets play second fiddle to the Giants. They can fly under the radar a little and afford to be a little more patient. It also helps that the Giants have been even worse and steal the headlines a bit. Plus the Bills are great, the Mets and Yankees are always making waves, the Knicks are good again, etc. NY media has more to focus on than the Jets.
Anyone suggesting the Jets need to be more patient can’t be taken seriously. How many decades do they need to become a respected organization? If their goal is to “fly under the radar” they should make Goodell happy and relocate to England.
Say what you want but this team still doesn’t have a whole lot of talent..
They do not have a lot of playmakers on this team. They have some beef on the lines which is a plus. The Jets don’t have the big play guys.
Not a bad idea to build from the lines out, if that’s what they’re doing.
“Kiss of death” from the owner’s statement.
Not even an interception. That’s hard to believe. Jet fans impatient ? Why would we be ? Maybe because we last went to a Super Bowl in 1969….
This next draft will decide the Jets and JD future. Plenty of good picks. He has to hit on them or else nothing will change. I’m still unsure why he drafted QB James Morgan with our 4th pick two years ago. Why ??? That concerns me as far as having confidence that Douglas knows what he’s doing in draft. CD Lamb would be our star receiver had we drafted him instead of Becton, who is a physical disaster. We need to draft quality players or nothing else matters. You gotta have the horses to win, not the Dogs !!
