On Wednesday, Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer told reporters that he hasn’t given any consideration to resigning in recent days (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo). Meyer also added that he hasn’t been fined by owner Shad Khan, who expressed disappointment with Meyer earlier this week.
“I have addressed this matter with Urban. Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence. What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable. I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect,” Khan said in a statement on Tuesday. “That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.”
Khan says he won’t fire Meyer over the embarrassing viral video, though the standard “good character” clause in coaching contracts could allow him to dump some or all of the obligation. Ultimately, it’d be a matter for an arbitrator to decide with an absolute fortune on the line. Meyer’s contract likely pays ~$10MM/year over the course of five or six years.
Scandal aside, Meyer is off to a terrible start in Jacksonville. They’re now 0-4 to begin the year, giving them 18 consecutive losses as a franchise. And, despite Meyer’s denials, one has to wonder if he’d be interested in the USC vacancy.
I can’t imagine a good attorney would be hard-pressed to defend Urban Meyer. Dancing around in his own bar in Ohio hardly qualifies as bad character. This is not drugging a minor or beating a partner or dog fighting or any of the other bad character activities the players get up to.
Basically it’s a tempest in a teapot and nobody’s business, except perhaps his wife, although it sounds like Urban and Shelley have an adult understanding about their own boundaries.
Unless his contract specifies what “good character” is supposed to mean. If it’s in a contract, it is legally defined, not a common sense understanding. Especially contracts done by such a business as an NFL franchise.
Meyer did not just party (or let off steam) in a bar. That party caused him to cancel a team meeting that Monday. Neglecting his duties-in a bad season, no less-is certainly an argument for bad conduct. Most people justify their off time actions by stating that it doesn’t affect their ability to do their job. In Meyer’s case, it clearly did. And his “unaffected” performance has been fireable as is. I would be tempted, if I were arguing a case, consider using his prior public disclosures about his commitment to the team close to or constituting false statements. I’m partially kidding, but still.
I agree. This is just another typical non-story turned into a pretend story via social media and society’s radical desire to destroy anyone it can, especially when they are a rich white male. His wife is the only one who has a real right to a complaint. That’s their business though.
A typical non-story? Find any instance in the last 40 years where a coach didn’t fly back home with his team and behaved like a fool in public while his players were back home prepping for the next game. Compound it with the fact that they’re 0-4. Add in a canceled team meeting, embarrassing his players, creating unnecessary controversy, and a string of idiotic comments since the story broke. Super unprofessional garbage that his players now have to deal with. Think about any successful NFL coach and try to imagine them doing this.
‘A rich white male’. Yeah, man. Those rich white men are so persecuted. Cry some more for them. Moron.
I doubt his players were preparing for their next game over the weekend after a thursday night game.
I will bet some players were preparing by taking care of their bodies and starting to watch film. The head coach of an 0-4 which has gotten their ass handed to them in 3 out of 4 games, should be trying to figure it out versus sticking his finger in some college girls ass. Especially when they are paying you 10M+ a year. Least you could do. Never mind the whole faith and family bs. I am sure his wife and daughters are proud, but hey, the money helps.
Answer me this question, RCT: What would need to be said on the plane that couldn’t have been said in the locker room after the game? They had over a week until their next game. I could understand if he did this on a short week, but he didn’t. To me this really isn’t a big deal.
Nobody said I am crying for him, douche bag. And if you read my comments you will see that I said that society wants to persecute everyone. It just so happens that right now rich white males are the worst if all in society’s view. Go chew grass,
You’re insane. Any lawyer would love to take this up if he’s confident in himself.
You can’t imagine a good attorney would defend him? A good attorney will if they get paid well.
Exactly, any good attorney he pays well to will gladly defend this character!
I mean, if he did, he’d lose out on the money, which was the main reason he took the job, soooo…
Unless USC stepped in with something similar which is unlikely but ya never know
The crotch fiddlin and grinding with the twenty-something was intentional, c’mon we know this guy. He’s angling for a way to get out of town, one that’s juuussst gray enough for him to keep some of his Jags money too.
Mike Price is rolling over in his grave.
LOL that was hilarious! Well said…
Will there ever be a story/incident where we don’t devolve it into race or gender as the primary issue?
Nope. Identity politics is life. What you are>who you are.
Forget what Meyer looks like, y’all. What he did, in COMBINATION with what he’s already done, is the reason why he’s getting this response. And it weren’t for Shad Khan making what we all thought was a bad decision to begin with and giving him that short-sighted contract, Meyer would be fired by now.
@lautrec: Nope. It’s just too easy for the simple-minded.
Yeah the bigger story is his players laughing at him. This isn’t going to end well. I remember all of those writers fawning over this “incredible hire.”
No doubt in my mind he’s one and done after the season.
Can someone, anyone, please try to get Matt Nagy out on a dance floor?
Two days in a row youve gotten the losing streak wrong its at 19 going on 20. They lost 15 in a row last year now have lost 4 this year.
