Urban Meyer‘s viral video caught Shad Khan‘s attention. In a statement on Tuesday, the Jaguars owner termed the head coach’s behavior as “inexcusable” (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero).
“I have addressed this matter with Urban. Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence. What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable. I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect,” Khan said. “That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.”
Meyer apologized to the team on Monday morning, days after their latest loss. His Jaguars are now 0-4 as they prepare for the Titans on Sunday.
“I just apologized to the team and staff for being a distraction,” Meyer said (via ESPN.com). “Just stupid, and so I explained everything that happened and owned it. Just stupid. Should not have myself in that kind of position.”
A loss to the Titans would extend the Jaguars’ losing streak to 19 games.
He owes his wife an apology probably, but he doesn’t owe the organization anything. What the man does on his personal time is the man’s own business. There’s a point where it needs to be realized being a public figure doesn’t mean your entire life is for public judgment.
You are right he owes his wife and family an apology.
But, they paid this man to build and lead their team.
Then after a loss to go out there like that is not a good example of leadership.
I can understand it not being a great look after a loss, that’s fair. This also isn’t a team that’s very good even on paper. They have about 2-3 painful seasons ahead if everything goes right. If not, probably more. Tough to ask someone to not be able to let loose sometimes, imo.
My issue is if that was his wife, is this a story? It might be a blip, but I don’t think it gains this type of traction. Whatever is going on, it’s between him and his wife- not him, his wife, the franchise and half of the country.
Appalachian Meyer and all those in professional sports are part of the overall “entertainment” industry. The $$ involved in owning and operating an entertainment business has a lot to do with public perception. How you act on and off the field impacts perception. Meyer is not only failing on the field but now off the field.
Idk because they’re 0-4 so he should be working to try to figure something out instead of partying with not his wife lol like he cancelled practice on Monday because he was too embarrassed to face the team. 0-4 with no plan to get better, and he’s the one causing the distractions that are stopping them from actually practicing to get better.
He should have been on the plane with the team. No leadership.
Eh, for the most part I agree with you, but this has spilled over into his professional life. He didn’t travel back to Jacksonville with the team after the loss to the Bengals (almost unheard of for a coach to do that), and it was to party like this instead of prepping for their next game (or even acting like you care about the next game).
Plus, according to all of the rumors flying around, he’s lost credibility with his players and even canceled a team meeting. He needs to apologize to the organization for at minimum not acting like a professional.
Here’s a good thread:

Yes he does. After a tough loss, when you haven’t won a game all year, to not fly with your team and go partying instead? Definitely owes the team and the organization a sincere apology. You can’t be a leader, especially of young men, when you are not setting an example and living to what you preach to them. Total lack of judgement. I would bring the wrath of Khan down on him.
He does owe the organization something because instead of going back with the team as required by all head coaches he went off on his own to sulk. It’s in the league rules that the coaches and players travel together until they get back home. He failed to follow the rules of the league as well as the contract he signed. He was completely in the wrong to his team, coaches, owner, organization, fans and embarrassed himself to his family as well.
He will probably be one and done this season. Should’ve stayed in college ranks like Nick Saban.
What is that in Urban’s hand in the picture?????
Also, it didn’t surprise me at all that happened. Did anyone see the time Urban was on ESPN while he was on his yacht drinking and had a naked friend in the background? Link below

Trying to tell his buddy that the coeds can wait.
Here comes the “health issues” followed by him quitting and taking the USC job.
I won’t say there’s no chance he takes the USC job, but I think if he does he needs to be fully sure NFL coaching isn’t for him. He’d never get another NFL shot.
My guess is he doesn’t go to USC.
His remorse was sincere? The man has been a car salesmen all his career selling recruits. He just sold you. Of course he’s gonna show remorse, he has millions on the line
I imagine Shad Khan knows Meyer told him what he wanted to hear.
He sure didn’t look too sincere at the podium, looking down and pretty much saying why he was told to say. He owes us nothing, but he does owe his family that apology.
That was shame and embarrassment
What is he holding in that photo? A rolled up magazine? A souvenir drink cup? His walking papers?
These big time college coaches all find out it is much easier to win and look good when you can just buy all the talent you want and basically get all first round picks in recruiting every year. They all find out that it is a lot tougher when it is an even playing field. Shad was Khan-ed.
Not for nothing, but few college coaches get to that level and those that due paid their dues at the Bowling Greens, Toledos and Central Michigan’s of the sport. Even then they don’t all get the recruits they target, they just have better chances of coming from the top.
“This gig is nowhere near as much fun as I thought it would be. What can I do to get fired?”
– Urban Meyer
But his contract is guaranteed! He’ll be fine w/ getting cut.
Not surprising, he has always been a con man.
I’ll stick by my prediction: He’ll be gone by week 10
An optimist, I see.
Yeah, I expected Week 8, but I am pleased (for Jags’ fans-I hate that this happened to you and I want it to be over so you can move on) that it seems to be accelerating.
This guy has been a train wreck for awhile, and it seems has a problem figuring out right from wrong. Has never handled stress well, and well Lucy, you have some splaining to do!
Trigger alert… Maybe he should’ve kept Tebow on the roster as a morale compass.
He should quit and take the USC job. He belongs in college and he could quickly make USC a prennial top 5 team once again.
Khan needs to get CM Punk to be the next Coach.
I’ve got to say that most of you have said what I would have, but I do want to raise one point: I’m not sure that, if he continues at this rate, Southern Cal will even offer Meyer the job. Being unable to handle pro game planning and strategy is one thing; being unable to handle yourself character-wide as a professional is another. I know Southern Cal has shown a willingness to back shady behavior from coaches before (Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkesian, and Pete Carroll), but I don’t think they’re going to want to be associated with someone who has gotten quite literally everything wrong since taking this job. The P.R. right now would be just too much on its own.
What Urban did is indeed inexcusable, but again this ultimately falls on Khan who continues to hire the wrong people for his team and points the finger at everyone else for falling short on a regular basis.
