Giants running back Saquon Barkley had to be carted off after suffering an ankle injury in the first quarter on Sunday. Barkley was later ruled out for the game, along with quarterback Daniel Jones (concussion protocol) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay (knee).
Barkley’s left foot bent the wrong way after a collision with Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis. An overhead shot of the injury (Twitter link via Will Brinson of CBS Sports) showed severe swelling. That likely indicates a lateral inversion sprain, according to Dr. David J. Chao (on Twitter). Additional testing will confirm what Barkley is dealing with, but it sounds like he’ll miss a few games at minimum.
Jones was the next star to go after clashing helmets with linebacker Jabrill Cox. Mike Glennon stepped in for Jones, and he may get the call again next week if Jones needs additional time to recover. Now, Golladay has also been ruled out for the game, leaving the Giants offense severely shorthanded. Beyond those three, they’re already without wide receivers Sterling Shepard (hamstring) and Darius Slayton (also hamstring), plus left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot).
The Giants entered today’s game at 1-3, dead last in the NFC East.
Dead last and thanks to the putrid defense today, dead in the water.
for the first time this season I saw disgusted blitzing, finally. it was prevalent in the 2nd half, although there were a few miscues. I did think the defense was better but still Dal converted 8 or 9 of 14 3rd downs, which isn’t going to help win any games.
The Lions will win a Super Bowl before the Giants win another!
No way.
Mara needs to sell, he’s stuck in the past. Read former and current executives and what they say about this organization, it’s not flattering.
What QB will the Giants be tanking for this year? Hopefully with two number one picks could the Giants get Rodgers or Wilson?
It is not a good draft year for QBs. Just look at Spencer Rattler at OU. Haven’t seen such an overrated QB since Christian Hackenberg and at least he had the excuse of being ruined by the terrible Penn State line he played behind.
Cowboys beat the holy hell out of the Giants today.
Remember when the Giants were the Giants. I can’t stand this team, GM, play calling etc. we have been rebuilding for 4 yrs and can’t get it right. We paid Williams and now he went to sleep. RB can’t stay on the field and our d is awful. Last pass rush was Keith Hamilton.
This is why you don’t draft a running back with a top 3 pick.
I don’t know… obviously passing on Josh Allen was now clearly a terrible mistake, but I say that with the benefit of hindsight.
If Baker and Allen had gone 1&2 that year, I don’t know that Barkley still wasn’t the 3rd best option. To me the mistake was passing up Allen, and the Giants weren’t alone there.
Even if they didn’t take a QB they could have drafted a good player in a different position. Just look at Denzel Ward, Bradley Chubb, and Quenton Nelson. I just don’t see the point in such a high pick on a RB with their injury issues, how fast they age, and the ability to get good ones other ways. Imagine taking Nelson in round 1 then Chubb round 2.
Exactly Black Ace. I said it back then, you draft a QB and a couple seasons in he’s growing into the offense and ready to take flight for years. You take a RB that high and he looks great out the gate and a couple seasons in he’s banged up and discarded for the next man up. This isn’t 30 years ago where you grab that franchise RB very high in the draft and ride for years, teams found out you need to chase that franchise QB high in the draft because they rarely hit free agency or are traded for, while very good RBs can be grabbed later in the draft.
The Giants actually have a better W/L record when Barkley hasn’t played.
Injuries are such a crap shoot. Saquan was easily the best player to take at #3 for the Giants at that time. Once in a lifetime talent at a spot of need for them. You can say all you want about, they should have taken this guy over him now.
If there is anyone you should be complaining about it is Jason Garrett and Evan Engram.
Gettleman’s “generational pick”…..compared to Elliottt, it’s not even close and Elliott isn’t exactly running behind an All Pro line these days….makes the most out of nothing and is punishing physically…..Pollard probably is better than Saquon as far as explosive plays……Barkley isn’t even close in talent comparatively! Waiting for the 1 running play in 10 where he runs away from the defense isn’t just getting old, but has been old for quite some time….what about the other 9 where he gains 14 yards?
Kenny Golladay was slightly better statistically last year in the 5 games in which he played. Not that staying in Detroit would have been better. He might have been able to offer the coach a tissue.
This might not be as bad as the pre-George Young-Big Tuna days, but it otherwise might be. The Giants right now are just awful; no O line, terrible draft choices, Williams and Solder are Free Agent busts, and at the presser today, it’s obvious Judge has lost control of the situation (nice guy, Judge, but in way too far over his head; a Special Teams coach, right? ’nuff said).
DJ is who he is, an Andy Dalton who can run a little. Again, good guy, tries hard, but there’s not much in the cart.
A complete wipeout of the organization (starting with the idiot GM) is needed and necessary.
The GM has got to go, and a new GM is going to want his own guy.
The problem is the Giants have too many holes to retool. A new regime needs to tear down to the studs. New line, new QB…RB’s and WR’s are interchangeable (and there is a huge surplus of WR’s but that didn’t stop them from drafting another one in the first round)
Nothing like getting your QB, RB, and top 3 WR injured along with the existing lack of o-line and pass rush to make a team look bad.
Well it looks like those training camp retirements make plenty of sense now. Giants are a train wreck.
Have to comment again here. The other Barkley injury update thread hijacked by politics.
Sorry but Barkley has crossed the line between unlucky and being made of glass/injury prone.
I like the kid, he says the right things, he tries hard. But even in the Broncos game he didn’t look sharp and he was “healthy” then. (Yeah I know I’m agreeing with Tiki for the first time ever).
