Joe Flacco is heading back to New York. The Jets have acquired the veteran quarterback from the Eagles, reports NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo (via Twitter).
Philly will acquire a conditional sixth-round pick that could improve to a fifth-round pick based on Flacco’s playing time (per ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Twitter). The sixth-rounder being sent over in this deal originally belonged to the Buccaneers, Sirius XM Radio’s Adam Caplan tweets.
[RELATED: Jets’ Zach Wilson To Miss 2-4 Weeks]
Despite the fact that the Jets pivoted to a rookie quarterback with the number-two pick, the organization decided against signing a veteran QB this past offseason. Now, with Zach Wilson expected to miss multiple weeks with a sprained MCL, the team was scrambling for depth at the position. We got a look at backup Mike White during yesterday’s blowout loss to the Patriots, and the former fifth-round pick threw a touchdown vs. two interceptions in his NFL debut. The Jets are also rostering Josh Johnson on their practice squad.
Flacco spent the 2020 campaign with the Jets and served as Sam Darnold‘s primary backup. The veteran ended up getting into five games (four starts) with New York, completing 55.2 percent of his passes for 864 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. While Flacco struggled during his first stint in New York, he’ll still provide the struggling and inexperienced Jets offense with a veteran presence. Of course, Flacco hasn’t been a full-time starter since the 2017 season, and he didn’t see the field during his brief stay in Philly…so Jets fans should certainly temper expectations.
The 36-year-old somehow parlayed his underwhelming 2020 performance into a one-year, $3.5MM contract with the Eagles to be Jalen Hurts‘ primary backup. Considering Flacco’s lack of playing time in Philly, today’s move makes plenty of sense for the Eagles. The team will now move forward with Gardner Minshew as Hurts’ primary backup. The former Jaguars starter was acquired by the Eagles back in August for a conditional sixth-round pick (a pick they’ve recouped with today’s trade).
Why not Foles? Pace must have his ringer off while he is washing Teddy’s car.
Jets aren’t trying to win tho… they want another high pick or just use to losing lol
James Morgan deserves a legitimate shot in NY…
James Morgan is in Carolina
I didn’t even realize that, I’d seen him in training camp with the Jets and I figured he was still there. Carolina must really love the Jets QB room from last year lol.
Given Darnold’s performance the last few weeks, maybe he deserves a shot in Carolina.
By the time Flacco learns a new offense, Zach Wilson will be back.
Seems like a lifetime ago we were all arguing over whether Flacco was elite.
John Clayton seemingly made that comment in every football story he wrote.
One step closer to Minshew mania in Philly
That ‘Hurts’.
Jaguar fan here. Yeah, Minshew is pretty much a one read guy. He’s 6ft tall and really struggles to see the field. More often than not he is a check down QB because he lacks arm strength and cannot work the middle of the field. He struggles mightily in cover two. He was benched last year in favor of Jake Luton and then Mike Glennon. He’s best left as a back-up.
Besides arm strength, aren’t these things Minshew can improve upon?
but Hurts cant because…
My heart wants to say yes because the guy is such a competitor. But he really struggles to see over the line and does leave a clean pocket a lot too. All of us in Jax were sad to see him go so we’re all rooting for him in Philly. But, you eventually have to see what you have in the guy. I’m just basing my observations on what his skill set was here in Jax.
Have you seen Hurts’ reads and decision making? Horrible, so he takes off running too much.
I’m one of those that puts most of the blame on the coaches not Hurts. His statistics aren’t terrible when you take into account he hasn’t played a full season and the coaching and play calling have been abysmal. This coaching staff should be one and done and Howie needs to go so there is someone that can actually take advantage of the draft assets for next year.
I’m a spectator only, but going into a NFL season with 2 rookie QB’s only usually ends up like this. Terrible management by the front office and coaching staff. How hard is it to figure out ‘Get a vested vet w/ 7+ years to help the young guy out.’? Apparently harder than I knew.
Your adopting a “spectator only” status? Shahid is going to be so upset that he is likely to shave off his mustache.
Even if they weren’t planning to seriously compete this year & didn’t want to risk Wilson getting outplayed by a vet, it’s just stupid from a development standpoint with a young QB room.
Flacco tried hard last year while Darnold was out, but outside of the front office, he has no connection to the current coaching staff. I like Joe but I’m wondering why they would give up a 5th or a 6th for him when they should hold onto their draft capital. Besides, this season is already looking out of reach. If Mike White bombed, they should activate Josh Johnson and sign James Morgan off the Panthers practice squad if he doesn’t fit in their plans.
Funny how they’ll get more in return for a washed up backup QB that was only in the way of Minshew than they will get for a young 1st round bust OT.
you do know there is more to life than Andre Dillard, right?
Forgot to add, this is a decent move by Howie. A quality backup buried as QB3 is senseless when your team is terrible and could pull a 5/6 rounder for QB2 who is pretty much finished as a starter. Hopefully this means Minshew is up to snuff with the playbook and we get a chance to see him take some snaps.
Do you really want guys who are happy to be holding a clip-board?
I guess the two Jet fans that bought Flacco jerseys when he first joined the team are pretty excited about this news.
Unless he changes numbers.
Funny but I saw a guy sporting a Flacco Eagles jersey this weekend and couldn’t stop laughing at why somebody would pay that kind of money for a jersey of a player who had zero chance to shine for that team.
You sure it wasn’t Flacco himself?
His last name is probably Flacco too. Really no other explanation, right?

……
How rude do you all have to be with your commentary? Flacco averaged 2 TD and 200+ yards per game under head coach Adam Gase. Plenty serviceable, especially considering that Flacco had no one to throw to.
Heh, dude literally had 1 good game out of 4 — settle down.
The Eagles should fire Howie right after the trade deadline so they can be first in line for GM candidates this winter. Then they need to fire the entire coaching staff other than Stoudland who is phenomenal. It’s evident that the top young coaching talent didn’t want anything to do with Howie. If they can get a quality GM the Eagles
HC and other positions will be far more appealing to up and coming coaches.
Although I commend Howie for the last two trades accumulating draft capital, I have zero confidence in his actual drafting abilities.
Start Minshew. That would give the Eagles jump start. He can’t do worse than Jalen at this point. Oh and dump Howie and Siriani. As a coach he sucks eggs.
Dumb move. Fire Siriani and Howie. Start Minshew, that will jump start the Eagles.
Dumber move was to cut their long snapper…WTF?
It was a procedural move. As a long term vet he’s exempt from waivers . They needed a spot for the QB from Miami before the trade. They will resign him later this week.
He’s back
Iggles are in the middle of a major tank…Three picks in the first fifteen..I for one, hope they go the Andy Reid method and load up on O and D lineman..I think if you have the very best QB over center, it wouldn’t change a thing if they can’t block…For whatever that’s worth…The best Philly teams had great lines on both sides of the ball…
just as long as they dont go all in on a bad QB class or trade a those assets for a guy who will be old by the time the rest of the team is ready to win.
I agree…Nothing special in this QB class..nothing there to trade for either..Watson will be gone to Miami sometime this week.
They aren’t purposely tanking but Gannon and Siriani are seriously deer so n the headlight coaches and no one should trust Howie with this draft.
Deer in the headlights …
