The Buccaneers have Tom Brady under contract through 2022, but they still intend on discussing an extension with him after this season, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. A fresh deal could give the Bucs additional breathing room in ’22 while cementing Brady as their QB well into his 40s.
Brady’s desire to test Father Time is well documented at this point. So far, the 44-year-old has been victorious, prompting GM Jason Licht to suggest that Brady could play until the of age 50.
“Fifty? That’s a long time. Even for me, that’s a long time,” Brady said earlier this year. “I’ve always said 45 was the age that I wanted to reach and that was my goal. This year I’ll be 44, so next year I’ll be 45. I got a two-year contract. I’m going to be able to obviously play this year and God forbid anything happens but play next year and then see what happens after that.
“If I still want to keep playing, I might be able to do that. And if that’s enough, then that would be enough.”
TB12 isn’t quite as confident as Licht, but La Canfora’s sources say he hasn’t given any thought to hanging ’em up between now and next fall. Brady’s also loving life in Tampa, so there’s little reason for him to seek a third pro team.
The Bucs are currently 3-1 with Brady under center. They’ll look for their next W on Sunday when they welcome the Dolphins to Tampa.
Is Brady really a lizard in a human disguise? And we’ve been bamboozeled this whole time?
Do they have sabermetrics and algorithms in football? If so, Bill James needs to go.
20 year extension
Eventually there will be a day in my adult life where TB is not in the NFL. And that will be a glorious day for me.
At least he’s out of the AFCE.
Go Bills!
Honestly I feel bad for you that you find joy in the greats retiring rather than sitting back and enjoying his brilliance!!
If you were a bills fan, you’d feel his pain. Brady is like 56-1 against the Bills
As a Browns fan I can relate. I can’t wait for Big Ben to retire and I’m gonna have to deal with Lamar for like 15 more f***ing years
I know he’s the goat and to many that’ll never change.
22 seasons, 7 rings, 5 super bowl MVPs, 3 regular season MVPs, 2 offensive player of the years, 14 pro bowls, 4 time throwing TD leader and 3 time passing yards leader.
That’s just a small list of some of his accomplishments. Most wins, most TDs, most passing yards, etc etc
However let’s say Mahomes and Andy Reid stay together at the Chiefs with Hill and Kelce.
So far in 3 full years as a starter he has 1 ring, 1 super bowl MVP, 1 regular season MVP, 1 offensive player of the year, 3 pro bowl and 1 time passing TD leader.
He’s already got 20% of Brady’s yards and TDs, so he’s well on track and at this rate would catch those records in about 10/12 years from now at his current rate. However I can’t see him maintaining that.
However these to remind me of Jordan and LeBron. For the longest time it was about Bron chasing the goat and I think Brady must have that in mind at little. I think 1 more amazing season, 8 rings that would be setting the bar very high
i dunno, i think the bar is already close to unreachable. maybe some of those stats will be eclipsed with more games, but no one’s topping his SB mark.
Yeah the things that he has accomplished I don’t see ever being accomplished again. Seven rings forget about it.
It seems crazy 7 rings in 21 full seasons but Mahomes so far is 1 in 3 full seasons as a full time starter.
In the other two seasons he lost to Brady in the AFC championship in OT and then last year in the super bowl.
Once Brady is gone who is stopping Mahomes?
Plus beside the rings, I think Mahomes will have more MVP seasons, more offensive player of the years, could catch his passing yards and passing TDs. Not to mention his rushing yards which will at least triple Brady’s.
Jake from State Farm will stop Mahones.
Mahomes’ contract will stop him. Brady taking less so he could have a team around him is an underrated aspect of his success.
I mean this year the chargers ravens and bills apparently, too assume he’s going to play 21 seasons is a lot, too assume Andy Reid is alive in 18 years I a lot, he is morbidly obese
In regards to mahomes, I’m starting to get nervous, Reid hasn’t produced a good offensive skill position talent since Kelce and hill, and both are getting older. And your beginning to see the affect of that mahomes contract on the defense. If mahomes were to overtake Brady as the goat, kc needs to start finding some serious value and talent in the draft. Can happen, but don’t believe it will. What do you think?
last year proves the SB thing is always going to be a hard bar to clear. seven requires some luck as well as consistently dominant play and coaching. now maybe Brady’s “luck” isnt quite what the term would suggest, but it takes more than just being good to win in a league where you’re constantly being pushed and your schemes picked appart.
You bring up a good point regarding KC’s skill positions, but a more important factor there is Reid’s age, and the quality of the defense.
Brady never really had to play on an outright bad defensive team. The Pats being out of the top ten defensively was pretty rare, because Belichick could focus his energies there and not really worry about the offense. Sure, he’d make a big trade or sign a great free agent sometimes, or draft a good TE, but there was a solid expectation that the offense would be good with Brady. Obviously the last few years were not as successful as the glory days, but they were still good enough for the Pats to be perennial contenders.
Reid, in contrast, will only really have a big impact on one side of the ball-and that’s where Mahomes is good at. Granted, the way penalties are set up now (and have been for the last fifteen years), offenses have a lot more clout and quarterbacks can play much, much longer. But Mahomes may not always have the advantage of a solid defense, because Reid is not that type of coach. He’s also much older than Belichick was with Brady and there is significantly less time to catch him. I doubt Mahomes will win the rings to even out the score between the two, though with the rules the way they are and the extra game, he could easily reach the stat marks.
Let’s also not forget two more things: Brady has played longer than any of his competitors. Rules or not, that’s a really high cliff to scale. He’s played longer than the guys he’s passed on the stat lists, and is still playing at a high level today. Not to mention, the team he is on is absolutely loaded. I can’t think of a team in NFL history that is individually as accomplished as this current Bucs team, on both sides of the ball. It’s insane.
If Mahomes or anyone else wants to catch Brady, they’d have to dominate in their prime and then continue to do so in their later years, which would take a commitment equal to what the Bucs have given Brady. It’s a pretty tall order. I don’t think Reid will be coaching in another five years, let alone ten. If the Chiefs win the big one every one of those years, Mahomes is still two behind Brady. I just am not sure anyone will ever even up that total, even if the rules continue to nerf defenses.
A lot of solid points but it could work in his favour.
Once Reid leaves which won’t be anytime soon, and Mahomes deal is getting closer to ending. You’ll need a new coach which could get the best out of the defence and allow Mahomes to do his thing on offence.
It could also fall at a similar time for Mahomes getting a new deal and taking less in order to chase Brady’s numbers.
Reid literally had a hospital scare the other week, he could have to retire on health grounds any time.
1000% BB was always great drafting from rounds 3-7 and filling out the defence.
Plus Brady taking less money often lead to keeping key players.
Not that Mahomes taking the money was a bad choice, but I think after this deal he will then take less and start to really chase Brady’s numbers
Let’s just let the young man play, and Let’s just enjoy watching one of the most talented and gifted QBs to ever play the game.
The thing with Brady and Manning is that, in a league with such parody, they were able to remain on top for such a lengthy period of time, especially Brady.
If Mahomes really wants to even challenge for such great feats, he’s going to have to capitalize off his endorsements, and take a bigger discount on his NFL contract.
This way, the Chiefs can afford to surround him with a quality OL, enough offensive weapons to get the job done, and most importantly the Chiefs can afford to provide him with a good enough defense where he can score 35 points and not lose multiple games.
I fully realize, right now, the Chiefs are struggling through multiple injuries to key starters, but SB teams HAVE TO HAVE DEPTH!!
Unless you’re able to hit on your early draft picks, and get at least some solid backups with your latter picks, every single year, you’re going to have to be able to sign some quality role players from free agency, and add key pieces to fill-in holes as well…
They’ll never have ALL that much cap room to keep a good to great OL, keep 4 or so good to great offensive weapons, and keep a defense that’s good enough to win him a title..
Hitting on your picks helps alot, but it’ll help ALOT MORE if Mahomes realizes his path to greatness can continue and end with him taking advantage of his off the field earnings and taking less from football and his team.
I’m not saying he has to, nor should he really, but that would be the only way he’d EVER even sniff Brady’s seven rings…
No, Mahomes won’t match Brady. TB was always selfless when it came to contracts, which allowed the team to be better. Mahomes signed a gigantic contract that will hamstring the team when it’s biggest years kick in.
I completely agreed with the last 2 comments but the Cap is going to keep going up and teams are abusing the hell outta this restructure thing. They can easily knock 15-20 mil each year atleast into a bonus and keep it decent. I think it will be interesting to see if we will ever see a limit on doing the restructures (also like to see mlb do a min and max cap) but I really thought the contract was enormous as well but expected and I now think it might not cripple them as long as they can develop another elite receiver within the next 3 years and base their early draft on defense annually 2-3 years.
The Brady taking less money thing is a rare occurrence and only happened because his wife made even more money the he did playing Football. No one is going to take a significant pay cut “for the team” and they shouldn’t be expected to.
Mahomes would be lucky to get 3 rings, he’ll never come close to 7
He’s been a starter for 3 years, in which he’s won 1 ring, lost a super bowl to the goat and lost the AFC championship game in OT to the goat.
I think Mahomes ends up with 6 and will have more MVPs, and beats some of Brady’s other records in which their will be a debate one day. It’ll be similar to Jordan vs Bron.
LeBron is MUCH further behind Jordan than Brady is ahead of anyone else, in my opinion. That’s a bit unrelated though.
Personally Bron is on par with Jordan and I think when it’s all said and done Bron is number 1
I’m 26. I’ve only known the nfl with Brady. I’ll miss him because he, along with Manning, Warner, brees, favre, Roethlisberger, were my childhood. I still love the early to mid 2000s era of the nfl and him and Ben are who I hang onto for that. Time flies
How I feel about Montana, Marino, Elway and Favre
very true
It seems that QBs today are much more gifted athletically and much less so in terms of controlling the offense. That’s just my impression. But, from I can see, the old days of an elite QB controlling the ball at the LoS and reading defenses are fading in some regard. So that way I agree with you-the Rodgers, Ryans, Roethlisbergers, Rivers, Brees, Mannings, and Bradys of the world are giving way to more athletic and less sophisticated QBs who rely on their physical gifts and coaching to win games. Some can do both, like Wilson or Rodgers (to some degree).
Of course, the penalties just gutting defenses help with that too. That’s just my feel, of course-maybe, as these younger guys age, we’ll see more of the classic field general style reemerge. But that’s just the way it seems now to me.
100% look at the top young QBs, Mahomes, Lamar, Watson, Allen, Burrow, Herbert, Lawrence, Prescott, Murray all much more mobile that the older generation.
Even if Brady is the serial cheater I believe him to be (avocado ice cream is a nicer way of saying designer HGH), what he did in Tampa…bringing in a whole new cast from scratch and winning it all…last year was damn impressive.
Might as well keep him.
part of me says it cant all be true, or that it’s all not true, but yeah, nevertheless he manages to accomish impressive things.
If you can’t beat someone just call them a cheater
He’s been caught cheating multiple times and he and I have never faced off.
“Whole new cast”. They had the best receiving core, O line, an elite defense. Brady was at the bottom of list as to why they won. Did you watch the NFC Championship?
