Oct. 24: According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, swelling in Mayfield’s shoulder has made it impossible for the fourth-year passer to sufficiently rehab the injury. He is in danger of missing the club’s Week 8 matchup against the Steelers, and because a harness alone may not prevent further damage if Mayfield is hit from behind and unable to adequately protect himself, he could be sidelined even longer than that.
Keenum — who navigated the team to a 17-14 victory over the Broncos on Thursday night — will obviously continue to get the nod in Mayfield’s absence.
Oct. 21: Baker Mayfield‘s shoulder injury sounds like it’s more serious than initially thought. Jay Glazer of FOX reports (via Twitter) that the Browns quarterback fractured the humerus bone in his shoulder.

While it’s uncertain when Mayfield suffered the injury, it occurred when his shoulder popped out of its socket, which vicariously caused the fracture. The quarterback suffered a shoulder injury back in mid-September, but he reportedly aggravated the injury during the Browns’ loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. The fracture is limiting Mayfield’s rotator cuff, per Glazer, and that led to the QB being inactive for tonight’s game against the Broncos.
“I need that fracture to heal for me to get back out there,” Mayfield told Glazer (Twitter link). The QB is still hoping that his return will come next weekend, but that will depend on how quickly the fracture heals.
After being listed as inactive tonight, Mayfield will officially miss his first game since taking over as the Browns starting quarterback in 2018. The QB had started each of Cleveland’s first six games this season, completed 67.1-percent of his passes for 1,474 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.
The Browns have backup Case Keenum under center in Mayfield’s stead, and the veteran will likely continue starting as long as Mayfield is out of the lineup.
Ouch! That fracture isn’t healing that quickly, is it?
Tough break.
The humerus bone is the top bone of the arm (shoulder->humerus->elbow) that goes into the shoulder socket. So the story should read arm bone instead of shoulder bone.
If he fractured the ball end of the humerus bone, this could cause LONG TERM injury concerns.
A month ago yesterday I was having surgery to repair a broken humerus bone after falling down some stairs. Mayfield is much younger and stronger than me but it will take some time before the full range of motion returns to that shoulder.
Doubt he’s back before the bye week….and honestly, they should be able to go about 3-2 in that stretch if the D can show up like last night.
The D showed up last night? Good grief it was the Broncos. I guess now they are a real firepower on offense?
Whatever excuse you wanna make Scooter, I don’t care. They won largely bc of defense.
Keenum, keep up the good play and maybe you can be the starting QB from here on out. I like Mayfield but not at $20M+.
$20m+ not even close. It isn’t 2010. He’ll be looking for $30Mil+
Baker is 1000% worth 20m+. Anywhere from 20m-29m is a reasonable salary for a top 16 QB, and Baker is absolutely a top 16 QB. In terms of salary, I think the question is do you top the 30m mark for him; and I can understand having reservations there.
I like Baker as a QB, though. I hope he doesn’t miss too much time but this injury sure doesn’t sound like a 1 or 2 week deal.
I don’t think he’s going to take anything less than $40 million
As a Steelers fan, I think that when healthy, the Browns have the most talented team in the division if not the entire AFC. But while Mayfield is a decent QB, I don’t think he’ll ever be the guy who gets them to the next level. Feel badly that he’s injured, of course
A sling or harness is basically useless if a strong 285 lb player is smashing you to the turf.
All opinions aside on this guy and as a Browns fan you have to admire his grit. His story too, it’s almost like the guy was born to QB for the browns and I’m not referring how uncannily he resembles the browns elf logo. However, there isn’t much difference in him and Case and I do believe Cleveland is actually stronger with Case/Stefanski as we saw what they did in Minnesota.
For those wanting a timeline like me…

Per league source, Baker Mayfield was advised against playing Thursday by both team doctors and the 2nd opinion he got back Tuesday. Mayfield, however, could return as soon as Oct. 31 vs. Steelers if the inflammation in the shoulder goes down #Browns
