49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan won’t guarantee much for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Following last night’s loss to the Colts, Shanahan told reporters that he “would guess” Garoppolo starts under center in Week 8.
“I would guess so,” Shanahan said (via Jennifer Lee Chan of NBCSportsBayArea.com). “I will watch this tape and see if guys are healthy, first of all, and know where our guys are at. It was good for Jimmy to get healthy enough to play in this game today.”
That probably has more to do with Lance’s knee sprain than anything. Garoppolo threw for just 181 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions and a lost fumble on Sunday. And, had it not been for Lance’s Week 5 injury, Garoppolo probably would have been holding the clipboard.
A calf injury sidelined for one game, but San Francisco’s bye week coupled with Lance’s injury put Garoppolo under center this week. Shanahan added that he didn’t see “a ton of bad decisions” from his one-time franchise QB, but it sounds like he’ll go back to Lance as soon as possible.
In five games this year, Jimmy G has completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards and six TDs against four interceptions. Lance, of course, was less-than-perfect in his Week 5 start, but the 49ers didn’t trade two future first-rounders to have him sit behind Garoppolo.
“had it not been for Lance’s Week 5 injury, Garoppolo probably would have been holding the clipboard.”
No.
The Cardinals and Rams are clearly going to leave the 49ers in the dust so there’s little to be gained by delaying Lance’s development. Jimmy is a lame duck at this point in time.
“Garoppolo threw for just 181 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions and a lost fumble on Sunday.”
Sorry, but that’s not going to cut it. What’s the point of having a veteran guy if he’s making mistakes like this.
While it’s hard to disagree with the overall sentiment of your comment I think you have to add a little more context:
The weather was absolutely terrible. The storm that battered the SF Bay Area yesterday brought 2” of rain and howling winds. The amount of rain that fell throughout the region was nearly equivalent to one months (in the rainy season) rainfall for this area.
If you’ve ever sat in Levi’s Stadium in a storm you’ll know that the stadium is exposed to the elements. I’m not making excuses for the QB. He’s clearly not the right man for the job IMO. I’m simply saying you have to realize that the weather played a huge factor in both QB’s total yds and completions.
Oh the weather wasn’t that bad.
Wentz played in the same game. He got away with a few bad throws, but also led the Colts to a blow out victory.
They had different balls though
But I’m sure they were all inflated to the correct PSI!
That was an awful called game by Kyle. He is clearly overmatched as a HC and his record says so. It was so bad that even Al & Chris were calling him out, live.
Pull the trigger and trade him. Prob can’t get more that a 5-7th rounder but it’s something
Who would want Garoppolo and why? He’s making $25MM and his skills only serve him as a backup.
The Blue Jays
Charlotte 49ers?
Here we fo. go with Kaepernick 2.0. should have drafted Mac Jones
What’s clear is that no QB was worth what they gave up to move to the #3 slot. They could have stayed put, or made a less damaging trade to get Jones if that’s who Shanahan really wanted. This regime has misfired too many times in the last five years on the field and in the front office, and their future is cloudier than when they got here.
The disdain Shanahan has for Jimmy is hilarious. Doesnt even try to hide it. I don’t know why all off-season he tried (poorly) to make it seem like Jimmy was the guy. Shanahan is such a terrible HC. He has no idea what he’s doing with the QB room and now has no draft capital since he traded it all away. He didn’t even know who to draft. Should’ve just taken Mac at 3
The more that time goes by, the more it’s apparent that Shannahan should simply stick with being an offensive coordinator. Trading away 3 first-round picks to acquire the pick that drafted Trey Lance… still stuns me.
It’s still early yet and I hope I’m wrong, but I saw a monumental bust in Lance long ago. He played QB in high school and not 1 FBS school thought he could do it at that level; he then couldn’t start at an FCS school so he sat out a redshirt year and then played QB for just 1 season before opting out. And teams were so starved for the next great thing that his draft stock went from day 2 to that hefty bounty to get him that high? Failure!
The 49’ers should trade Jimmy to Miami for some picks. Jimmy is a good QB but he comes from the Patriot system as does the Miami coach. This way, Miami gets a QB better than Tua and SF gets to keep La very moving forward.
Jimmy? Better than Tua?
Hahahahaha!
You’re funny!
I truly think the Niners are starting Jimmy G so they can up his trade value before the deadline before the hand over the reins. No one is going to trade for a backup. Problem is, Jimmy is not doing them any favors by playing the way he is.
They* hand over the reins
Time to start scouting 2024 qb’s. With an actual head coach who knows how to win would be a good start and a GM with some experience also.
“but the 49ers didn’t trade two future first-rounders to have him sit behind Garoppolo.”
That’s exactly what they did. It just didn’t turn out the way they thought it would.
