49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hopes to miss “just a couple of weeks” with the right calf injury he suffered on Sunday (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). An MRI will tell the full story, but Garoppolo will be sidelined for at least a little while.
Trey Lance took over for Garoppolo in the latter half of the game, completing 9-of-18 throws for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also added for 41 rushing yards on seven tries. Ultimately, the 49ers couldn’t close the game, losing 28-21 to the Seahawks.
“We’ve been playing with rookie running backs since the second play of the first game and we’ve got a rookie quarterback right now,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. “Hopefully, Jimmy is better, and not as bad as we think, but Trey is here for a reason. You want to give him time, you want him to be fully ready, but you don’t always have that luxury.”
Garoppolo, meanwhile, went 14-of-23 for 165 yards and one TD, scored on the flawless opening drive. Unfortunately, the calf injury slowed him down as the half progressed and ultimately forced him out.
Depending on the severity of his injury, the 49ers may choose to put Garoppolo on short-term IR, which would rule him out for the next three games. In his stead, it’ll be Lance starting under center, beginning with their Week 5 tilt against the Cardinals.
If what I read last week, Jimmy was that MF’er Tom was talking about! Lots of articles SF was his preferred choice.
I don’t think Brady was being specific with that comment. He probably thought that about all of the quarterbacks.
In any case, he absolutely could not have gone to a better situation. Nobody would have signed all of those other superstars or worked hard to retain them, not to mention committed to that defense as well. Brady ended up in the best place he could have strategically.
Sad to see the iron man go down. All streaks comes to an end. Excited to see him start a new Games Played streak when he returns.
You Sir (or Ma’am) are amazing.
Well said. A very Cal Ripken-esque streak indeed.
So close, yet so Favre
Who could have seen this coming?!?!
Doesn’t matter who plays QB “ The Genius” Shanachoke will figure it out.
Well to be fair the game plan was for jimmy g. They didn’t expect to have to throw out the game plan and have to put together a new one for lance on short notice
Shanahan has always been very good at scheming before the game, but has also been extremely bad with in game adjustments. Lance will probably get his own gameplan for next week like you said, but unfortunately the 9ers should have seen this coming as a possibility before it happened. I don’t doubt that Shanahan has some notion of what he’d like to call for Lance, but from I’ve seen (and it’s just my opinion), he really, really struggles to adjust ingame to changes in his scheme’s effectiveness. The plays are constructed to build on each other, I know that, but Shanahan can seem inflexible at times as a playcaller.
Ak, 2 touchdown drives by Lance in only 2nd half. Isn’t that an indication Shanahan implemented a Lance based scheme at half time. Pretty difficult to do that in 10 minutes. Sounds “flexible” to me.
I stand by what I said. I don’t think Shanahan is bad as a coach, I just think that he can get too confident in his own gameplan at times. I figured that Shanahan had a gameplan of sort for Lance on hand when he was drafted-not a full probably because Lance wasn’t starting-but I mostly was referring to Shanahan’s inflexibility I’m not being able to deviate from that premise plan in game. I’ve just seen too many of his games where he sticks with his tendencies instead of adjusting to what the defense is doing. I’m sure we’ll see it down the road.
I hear you and I just think the 2nd half could be a start of things to come.
Fair enough. This will be Shanahan’s first hand-picked quarterback. Let’s see how he handles the development.
On the bright side at least Kyle can game plan for trey and not have to throw plays together that was plan for jimmy g. So we get to see what Kyle can do with a week to work with lance
