It was the fear yesterday, but now it’s official. Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a hip subluxation during the team’s loss to the Chargers on Sunday, head coach Ron Rivera confirmed. The veteran is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter).
Rivera announced that Fitzpatrick will be placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least the next three games. That means that it’ll be Taylor Heinicke under center when Washington takes the field in just a few days for a Thursday Night Football game against the Giants. It also means it’ll be Heinicke leading the team for the foreseeable future. If there’s any good news, it’s that Ian Rapoport of NFL Network tweets that there’s “no indication yet that it’s season ending.”
Rivera said Fitzmagic is getting second opinions to determine the severity. For now it’ll be Kyle Allen backing up Heinicke. Washington is coming off a division title and had high expectations for this season, leading many to speculate they could look to add a veteran signal-caller.
Recently release Cam Newton, of course, is very well acquainted with Rivera from their days in Carolina together, although it looks like for now the plan is to roll with Heinicke and see how he fares. Beat reporters at the press conference say Rivera was firm about staying in-house for now. If the former UDFA struggles, then it wouldn’t be surprising for Washington to look outside the building.
It’s a tough blow for Fitz, who was injured in the first half of the first game with his new team. He’ll turn 39 in November, so it’s fair to wonder how easy of a recovery this will be for him. Here’s to hoping he gets back as soon as possible.
I hope they don’t bring in Cam. His arm is dead. Just because he’s familiar w/ the system doesn’t mean he’s still good.
Yea but that’s why Allen and Heinicke are around too from system familiarity… While I prefer Heinicke over Cam I wouldn’t mind Cam over Allen as a backup
If they sign Cam and his personality I may have to finally give up on my team. Next thing you know Kaepernick will be an option
Kaepernick would be better than the options WFT currently is rolling out
You can’t be serious. Dude has been out of the game since some of these guys were still in high school. Considering the backups in the NFL if he wanted to play he’d play. But Kaep needs to be a starter according to Kaep.
No team would sign Kaep as a backup because of the media circus it would create.
Even not playing in years he’s certainly better than some currently rostered nfl quarterbacks.
I don’t think he’s better than Heinicke though at this point to be fair. But he’s definitely better than someone like Sean mannion or cooper rush.
whats wrong with Cams personality?
or Kaepernicks for that matter?
Actually it is RGIII that is sending hints that he wants to join the WFT. Is that better or worse?
After all of the nonsense over the years from Dan Snyder-era ownership, signing Cam to be a backup QB would be your last straw? Come on, man.
With that thought, they might as well trade for Watson. Much better than CK.
WFT had a chance to sign Newton last year for next to nothing when they had no real starting QB. Rivera passed. Since that time Cam stunk it up in New England, thus I suspect they’ll sign someone younger for emergency use only and concentrate on determining if Heineke is an option for the future or not.
WFT just seems like they will perpetually be looking for a QB. Rypien is the only QB in the last almost forty years to be their QB for more than three straight years.
A situation like this is why, if I were Cam or his agent I wouldn’t have signed with another team over the last week or two.
Whether it’s with Washington, or another team in the coming weeks, if a contending team loses their QB it puts a lot more value into Cam’s stock and drives his price higher.
If not WFT, my Giants could probably use him and that’s even with his dead arm. I’d rather see him skip balls into the dirt than watch Daniel Jones fire it directly to the other team or Evan Engram tip it up in the air for an interception.
I’ll have no problem admitting I’m wrong if I am, but I have a feeling that Cam is going to be a free agent for longer than people seem to think he will be. Maybe even a lot longer. I think he made a bad situation worse for himself with his “aura” comments after the Patriots released him. He simply thinks he’s better than he is, and more importantly than the league thinks he is.
No excuses if the Giants lose to Washington now someone needs to be fired.
Come on, now. Taylor Heinicke didn’t embarrass himself against Tampa Bay in the playoffs and looked ok yesterday against an improving Chargers team. And then there’s the Washington defense, one of the best in the league. Washington is not a horrible football team, and potentially could be a very good team this year, even with Heinicke. Joe Judge did a good job in his FIRST year last year. So if the Giants lose the second game of this season, whom do you suggest gets fired? Dave Gettleman? They’re not firing their GM two games into the season, despite the desires of such by a number of Giants’ fans. Just relax and keep rooting for your Giants and let the season play out without demanding consequences based on one game.
