Are the practice squad rules the same this year as they were last year?
Yes
Thank you kindly.
Seems like a “covid change” they should make permanent.
Agreed. It hurts no one and just gives overlooked players more opportunities-or veterans another chance to be ready while awaiting a call-up.
I’m going to be a naysayer here. The NFL is bloated in so many areas already. I envision 30 man practice squads with multiple coaches by the time the league expands to an 18 game schedule. All these added costs eventually get passed on to the fans. I think the players themselves would benefit more by being in an XFL type league where they would actually have a realistic chance of playing in games.
That it would, but the practice squad doesn’t really exist for the players so much as it does for the teams. They get to keep guys that they like, and use guys for simulations who can move like opponents. The players themselves don’t really develop, but they can stay around football.
The XFL would help development a bit, but it mostly helps by showcasing overlooked players. The NFL, after years of quashing rival leagues, would benefit immensely from its continued existence, but they don’t really have the same purpose. I don’t think the practice squads should further than they do now, but a couple of more spots and openings for a small number of vets are good developments in my mind.
I’d prefer to see the 53-man rosters expanded to 56, and the game day rosters from 45 to 48.
That Will Sherman sure has staying power
I’m so glad I have this site to use instead of ProFootballTalk. I’m especially glad when it comes to anything having to do with the Bills or Vikings, so I don’t have to read Mike Florio’s insertion of irrelevant issues into articles that don’t have anything to do with them. So thanks, PFR, for all of your hard work and lack of bias.
