7:12pm: Edwards’ ACL tear has been confirmed. Schefter reports (via Twitter) that the Ravens running back indeed suffered the season-ending injury. The organization will soon have three RBs sitting on IR.
6:58pm: The Ravens will be without at least one of these starters this season. Peters’ MRI confirmed an ACL tear, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. This will be the All-Pro corner’s first significant injury as a pro. Edwards’ tear has yet to be confirmed.
2:57pm: Injuries have already impacted the Ravens considerably coming into the season. Thursday’s practice brought more trouble. The team cut its workout short after Marcus Peters and Gus Edwards suffered knee injuries, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
Peters and Edwards went down on consecutive plays, and Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic notes (via Twitter) team is concerned the maladies are severe. Indeed, the Ravens fear both players suffered ACL tears, Rapoport adds (on Twitter). Each is undergoing tests. Both injuries are believed to be of the non-contact variety, NFL.com’s Peter Schrager tweets.
Edwards is the last man standing among Baltimore’s running backs, at least among those on last year’s squad, while Peters is entering his third season as a key Baltimore starter. The Ravens have already lost starting running back J.K. Dobbins and third-year reserve Justice Hill for the season.
Baltimore is down to second-year UDFA Ty’Son Williams at running back. Williams, interestingly, has worked his way back from an ACL tear sustained during the 2019 season while at BYU. The Ravens signed veteran special-teamer Trenton Cannon on Wednesday and have Le’Veon Bell stashed on their practice squad. Both moves take on greater importance after this Edwards development.
The Ravens are already set to begin their season without first-round pick Rashod Bateman, who is on IR after suffering a groin injury that required surgery early in training camp. Edwards was set to be Baltimore’s starter, after three straight seasons of 700-plus rushing yards north of 5.0 yards per carry. The Ravens extended the former UDFA back on a three-year, $12.38MM deal earlier this summer.
Peters signed a three-year, $42MM extension near the end of his first season in Maryland. He has been the NFL’s top turnover producer during his six-year NFL tenure. The former Chiefs first-round pick and Rams Super Bowl starter is going into his age-28 season. In 23 Raven games, Peters already has seven interceptions and four forced fumbles. Peters’ deal runs through 2022.
Beyond Bell and Cannon, the Ravens could certainly reach out to Latavius Murray, whom the Saints just released after he refused a pay cut. Todd Gurley is also available, joining Kerryon Johnson, Lamar Miller, Alfred Morris and Adrian Peterson in that regard. Replacing Peters would be much tougher for the franchise. The Ravens do possess some cornerback depth, however, with 11th-year veteran Jimmy Smith still in place behind boundary starters Peters and Marlon Humphrey. Smith, however, missed a few weeks of practice after suffering a sprained ankle during camp.
Somethings going on in Baltimore
Probably time to fire the entire grounds crew
gotta be the turf.
I guess Le’veon will get the call up to the main roster.
No way. This is unbelievable.
All THREE top backs?
Inb4 the “Lamar is already Baltimore’s RB1” comments…
So much for all of the complaints about wisdom of playing preseason games when Dobbins went down. Backs #2 & #3 and a top CB all went down in practice.
Somebody better make a thorough review of their practice field.
all 3 RB? and Peters? what bad luck
Sign Latavius Murray, Trade for Ingram ?
Absolutely. Murray is the call here. He can still play…. Bell not so much.
Isn’t Ingram a free agent? Wasn’t he cut?
Nope he’s a Texan, in fact he might start over Phillip Lindsay and David Johnson.
Between those guys and Burkhead and the other backs, the Texans should have a valuable contributor available if the Ravens decide they need to give up assets. The Texans already have a logjam at the position, they could be smart and get a pick or two if Baltimore wants to deal.
I wonder if they’ll give Jordan Howard a look? He is different than they’ve typically used stylistically but he has more starting experience than any other current free agent outside of Adrian Peterson or Frank Gore or maybe Devonte Freeman. Maybe they’ll sign Freeman or Holyfield, both of whom worked out for Baltimore.
They signed Freeman.
Yeah, I saw it after I posted. Thanks for the heads up.
Are the Ravens still favored against the Raiders in Vegas? I predict lots of fumbles takes time for RB’s and the QB to get in sync especially in this offense. I picked the Ravens 10-7. Might have to rethink that to 7-10. Key hit to the Defense, and basically a whole position group wiped out.
The Ravens will still easily score more than 10 points you’re bugging out
Last year covid, this year ACL tears. Really unfortunate string of bad luck. Don’t like to see it no matter who you root for
The Ravens should be looking to pick someone off another teams practice squad.
The Ravens Offensive MO is to run the ball, Don’t know why they got rid of Ingram in the 1st place. But now they put themselves in Deep trouble.
Mark Ingram and Phillip Lindsey are available from the Texans.
Take both for a 2023 3rd round and 5th pick.
After the Peters injury, trading Wade to NE might come back to bite them.
Good point. You can’t ever have too many good cornerbacks, that’s the first rule. The second rule is that if you think you have too many cornerbacks, you should read the first rule again.
Wade probably wouldn’t have played outside where Peters was going to. He’s best inside in the slot, which is probably where he’d have played most of his snaps even in the ever that Peters went down. I think the Ravens would have kept Wade and still tried to get another starting boundary corner to replace Peters, though good supporting cast members are more important when a starter goes down.
Would they pursue a trade for Gilmore from NE?
With the new vax guidelines Lamar might not be available either
Huh?
Something is wrong in river city
Charm city.
Something is wrong in river city,
Leveon Bell and Devonta Freeman both don’t exactly scare anyone anymore. I guess they’d better hope this Ty’son Williams grows up fast. Listen I’m a Steelers fan but wouldn’t wish this rash of injuries on anyone, this is just unreal.
I would expect a more conservative game plan from Greg Roman against the Raiders to protect the rb’s and Lamar. The problem is a week 1 loss plus a game against the Chiefs could very easily put the Ravens at 0-2. As if 17 games wasn’t a long enough season, it feels long already.
they will be fine. Freeman/Bell are experienced enough and have track records of success. It’s Lamar staying healthy that should be their biggest concern. I fear that he will soon be the latest running QB to flame out due to injury concerns. Certainly wouldn’t wish ill upon the guy, but it’s a well documented fact that QBs who run as much as he does tend to suffer serious injuries. And then they try to adjust their game to a pocket style and are never truly effective again.
I heard there’s a wife beater on the market with some familiarity with the Ravens
You’ll have to be more specific. This is the NFL.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if all that union-mandated non-practice time is actually INCREASING injuries.
THIS right here!
Maybe, I could certainly see it. One thing it definitely is doing is killing tackling, especially in the early part of the season.
There’s a whole bunch of issues involved with losing the top 3 RB’s on your depth chart going into week 1 of the season but one issue that could become a huge problem at least early in the year is pass protection from the RB’s the Ravens just picked up. Admittedly Murray, Freeman and Bell are generally pretty good at picking up pass rushers but all of them have generally played with stationary if not statuesque QB’s that look to get rid of the ball and not run like Lamar.
