LeSean McCoy is hanging up his cleats. The veteran running back will sign a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Eagles, capping his career after 12 NFL seasons.
McCoy, 33, spent last year with the Buccaneers and captured his second Super Bowl ring. Afterwards, he seemed intent on playing in 2021.
“The only thing is it has to be the right team,” McCoy said. “I can’t go from two Super Bowls to playing with BA (Bruce Arians), Andy Reid, Tom Brady, and Patrick Mahomes to not even having a team that’s competing. I’m still a competitor. To bring me back, I have to play for a team that is a contender, or with some young guys I could help out. I still want to be effective and get a shot to play and showcase my talent. I still have some more highlights to give out.”
McCoy played sparingly for Tampa last season, getting only ten carries and 15 receptions in ten games. Of course, he was also one of the most accomplished running backs of the past decade. McCoy made six Pro Bowls in seven seasons from 2011-17.
After 12 years with the Eagles, Bills, Chiefs, and Bucs, McCoy racked up 11,071 rushing yards. Another couple of seasons could have put him at 12,000 — every retired RB who has eclipsed 12,000 is in the Hall of Fame. Others who ended their careers between 11,000 and 12,000 — Fred Taylor, Steven Jackson, and Corey Dillon — have not been inducted, but McCoy could potentially find his way to Canton.
McCoy should be a Hall of Famer. Teams don’t run the ball as much as they used to, so he didn’t get the carries the last 5 years he would have, if the rules had not changed to favor passing the ball. His 4+ yards a carry & 11k yards along with All Pro and Pro Bowls are worthy.
Yeah but also was garbage the last couple years of those last 5 years
Man I’m really torn with McCoy. I can see both sides of him getting in or not, and I imagine that voters are going to have a tough time deciding on him.
Then Fred Taylor should be as well. One of the best all-around backs and most efficient of his era. Not sure but I believe his career ypc is 4.7 or so. Stephen Jackson’s career numbers are almost identical to shady’s as well.
Taylor was a beast. Very underrated.
Man, I don’t know. I was an Eagles fan until they fired Reid and let Chip Kelly ruin the team, so I watched a lot of McCoy. He was good, but I just don’t know if he’s HoF worthy. His two rings are just from riding the backs of better players/teams. He didn’t contribute much to that. I don’t know. We’ll see.
“The only thing is it has to be the right team,” McCoy said. “I can’t go from two Super Bowls to playing with BA (Bruce Arians), Andy Reid, Tom Brady, and Patrick Mahomes to not even having a team that’s competing. I’m still a competitor.”
The single most backwards cliched thought process in sports is…
“I want to win so I will only play on an already good team…because I’m a competitor.”
That is not a competitor, that is a cherry picker.
What he means is that he wants to be on a winning team. It’s probably that much more fun playing for a winner than a loser. It’s not about a paycheck. That still makes him a winner
After those hard years in Buffalo, who can blame him? McCoy has served his time on non-winning teams.
Heck of a career! Enjoy retirement.
heck of a RB. good luck in retirement Shady.
Canton bound
Marginal. Only contributed to one Super Bowl win. Was a non-factor in Tampa.
Marginal?
Take a deep dive into his stats and put the deeper ones up against the all time greats.
He’s a first ballot hall of famer
Contributed to a Super Bowl winning team, but not in the playoffs or the “Super Bowl win”.
I disagreed about Hall of Fame, until I looked at his numbers. 11000+ yards rushing. 86 total touchdowns. He was better than I thought he was. Only real negative, in my opinion, is the domestic abuse incident.
