For the second-straight week, the Eagles have extended a member of their 2018 draft class. The team announced this morning (via Twitter) that they’ve agreed to a three-year extension with defensive end Josh Sweat.

The three-year deal is worth $40MM and includes $26.9MM in guaranteed money, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Sweat received a $10MM signing bonus as part of the deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter). The deal contains $2MM in incentives “based on consecutive years of 7 sacks,” boosting the maximum value to $42MM (per Rapoport). The extension will keep the 24-year-old in Philly through at least the 2024 season.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk adds some additional details, reporting that Sweat will earn base salaries of $920K, $1.035MM, $12MM, and $13.75MM over the life of the deal from 2021-24. In addition to the $10MM signing bonus, the first two years of salary are fully guaranteed at signing, as is a $2.965MM option bonus for 2022. $9MM of Sweat’s $12MM salary for 2023 becomes fully guaranteed in March 2022, and the remaining $3MM becomes fully guaranteed in early 2023.
With respect to the sack escalator that Rapoport referenced, Florio says that Sweat can earn an extra $2MM in 2024 by posting at least seven sacks in each of the next three years, nine sacks in two of the next three years, or 11 sacks in any individual year.
Sweat was a fourth-round pick by the Eagles in 2018, and after barely playing during his rookie season, he found a role in Philly over the past two seasons. Sweat appeared in 30 games (three starts) for the Eagles over the past two years, collecting 59 tackles, 10 sacks, 22 QB hits, 16 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. Those numbers were collected despite the fact that Sweat only played on 35 percent of his team’s defensive snaps in 2019 and 38 percent of the defensive snaps in 2020.
The pass rusher appeared in more than 50 percent of his team’s defensive snaps during their Week 1 win over the Falcons, collecting six total tackles.
Last Saturday, the Eagles agreed to a four-year, $64MM extension with offensive lineman Jordan Mailata, a 2018 seventh-round pick.
Two straight weeks eagles keep a good young OL/DL. Eagles making good moves
I know guys at that position cash in on the second contract, but that’s a lot of money for a backup with health questions.
Negotiations on the extension proceeded rapidly between the team and Josh’s agent.
In fact, Josh was not in attendance, nor was he consulted.
You might say,
(Well, YOU probably WOULDN’T say – BUT I WOULD !!)
NO SWEAT !!
No
Very smart moves by the Eagles. While the fans and local media fixate on Dallas Goedert, the Front office smartly take care of the more expensive OT and DE positions. The tags on those positions are 21 million plus. The Franchise tag on TE is about 14 million.
The Eagles are now paying Sweat and Mailata 13 million and 16 million per, when they could have commanded 20 plus million each, on the open market, if they have the type of years we expect they’ll have this year.
Nice move definitely helps while your QB is cheap
Neither guy was gonna make $20 mill on open market .. Philly overpaid for 2 injured players .. Howie being Howie
Mailata is injured?
Mailata is not injured but Sweat had a very serious career altering injury a few years ago and has had other dings put him out.
Neither Sweat nor Mailata are/were injured.
20 million a year on the open market for a backup defensive end? Gimme some of what you’re smoking. What exactly has Sweat done to warrant thia extension?
Sweat’s not making $20m a year. Try $14m.
He’s not a backup DE. The Eagles rotate thru their DTs and DEs. Sweat had more snaps last week than the guy who was out there to start (Derek Barnett).
Dude.. you need to pay attention more… the comment I was replying to said Sweat would have made 20 million per year on the open market.. and i literally said that in my comment so Im not sure how you got confused?
You’re right…sorry ’bout that, chief.
Now that Mailata and Sweat are locked up, Goedert will be extended next.
Two really strong moves in consecutive weeks.
That’s probably a record for Howie.
$40mill for a guy with 10 career sacks $80mill for a guy with 10 career starts.. such bad moves.. Howie sucks
More like $27 and $41 because well guarantees…
You’re a fat head for sure, buddy. While the Eagles have solid offensive and defensive lines, they’re getting old. These last two moves lock up two 24-year-old linemen for several years to come.
People critical of the Mailata and Sweat signings aren’t knowledgeable of the Eagles roster or salary stucture. The Eagles just locked up the 2 best young players on their roster for deals that will look like bargains by next off-season
Eagles making good moves, like I said it’s going to be a rebuild. They have good young players and some solid vets.
Having cleaned out the last regime and starting with a new coach, new QB and new WRers and a young talented RB and TE they look a lot better.
Not going to be world beaters but give them a few years and they will be up there
I like the move to lock up a solid homegrown contributor, but that number seems a bit high for a rotational DE. Sweat plays a lot, but he’s still a rotational player with a couple of solid years. I like the move to keep him around, but the numbers seem a bit higher than I’d expect.
Exactly, and I’m sure a few other guys in the locker room are now looking around wondering when their offers are coming.
If the players are being honest with themselves, the only player that can be angry about an Sweat extension is Derrick Barnett. He knows that it was him or Sweat for the money, and Sweat got it. Graham, at his age, is smart enough to know better.
Knowing Howie, Barnett is likely allowed to walk, because he knows he’ll get a 3rd round comp pick, when Barnett signs somewhere else.
And Barnett has not produced up to his draft slot. Other players looking for an extension? I dunno, maybe Sanders and Goedert are seeing $$$.
I agree with you, MD., and you also, Hammer. Barnett should be cognizant of the Sweat extension, given that he’s been treated as the starter (or at least had the extended opportunity). Barnett maybe has not been a complete bust, but he was expected to be the long term starter on the edge, and hasn’t seized that role enough to prevent Sweat from likely usurping that role. And again, though Sweat has been solid, he didn’t blow anyone out of the water. Barnett should have been able to make up that difference.
First game after signing and you wouldn’t even know he dressed today… :/
Great penalty Barnett…game over!
Last week was a mirage, this team has a long ways to go . Lots of poor play calling this week.
Yes, last week too but they were able to get past them. This week they couldn’t finish when it counted.
Neither O or D could come up with any big plays when it really mattered
Same as his 4 starts last season, Hurts shows flashes and then fizzles.
