Things have changed since Davante Adams‘ contract last came up. Aaron Rodgers ended his holdout and reported to training camp on time. But the reigning MVP’s future is fuzzy beyond 2021. So is his top wide receiver’s.
The Packers and Adams still appear to be at a stalemate. The sides broke off talks in July, but Adams was open to restarting them. However, he and the Packers remain far apart on an extension. Adams said Wednesday there is “no chance” of a deal coming to pass before the start of the season, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com tweets.
This situation compares to the Steelers’ T.J. Watt talks, with an old-school franchise not giving in on guarantees. The Packers are not willing to give Adams any guaranteed money beyond his signing bonus, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein (on Twitter). While Green Bay was able to keep Aaron Jones this spring, with the running back’s $13MM signing bonus doubling as the deal’s only fully guaranteed money, Adams plays a more valuable position that has a longer shelf life. The Packers are dug in here, per Silverstein, leading to an impasse.
Adams wants a deal that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid wideout. With DeAndre Hopkins‘ outlier $27MM-per-year deal currently occupying that space, it is difficult to imagine Green Bay going there. The Packers could have Jordan Love‘s rookie contract to build around, but some Rodgers dead money would remain on Green Bay’s cap in 2022 — in the event of a trade — going into the third year of Love’s team-friendly deal.
A four-time Pro Bowler going into his age-28 season, Adams would make sense on a Hopkins-type medium-length extension. But the sides are not there yet. Green Bay’s top target will go forward with a contract year.
No deal being finalized before the season would not kill an arrangement to keep Adams in Wisconsin long-term. The Packers signed him to his current deal late in the 2017 season and have the franchise tag to deploy should this situation head to that point of the calendar. While the Packers have not used their tag since 2010, Adams could be worthy of a short-term fix — especially if Rodgers remains in the picture for 2022.
If he is smart he would leave and go to Atlanta.
Why Atlanta? I’m not sure he’d want to hitch his wagon to another older QB especially one that would be a downgrade from Rodgers. I think he’ll wait to see what Rodgers is doing next off-season and then look to maximize money with a competitive team with a talented younger QB.
Gonna link up with carr. Raiders need a #1 to pair with Waller. If ruggs can’t get it done I can see it
Are the Raiders committed to Carr?
Or Gruden?
Or Mayock..?
Gruden, yes. Carr, likely so, at least for the next two years in my estimation. Mayock? I would say that depends on this year. If his picks do poorly this year, then he will likely have next year as a last chance draft. I don’t think he’s on the hot seat, but considering the massive exodus of snaps and the redundant picks (how many starting safeties have the Raiders selected or even signed in the last few years?) at some positions, not to mention some of the picks that have been shed (Bowden and Muse come to mind), make this year important for validating some head scratching decisions.
The Raiders seemingly have gotten older at a lot of places by signing veteran free agents to compensate for draft picks (interior defensive line, linebacker), while shedding quality veterans at others for unproven players (the offensive line for instance). It’s a big pool of seemingly contradictory decisions that will have to be proven right soon, or someone will have to go. It won’t be Gruden, so Mayock (who is technically junior to Gruden in many ways and I believe was hired at his behest) will likely be the one to do so. The question is who will Gruden tire of first Carr or Mayock?
Of course, Gruden himself influences these decisions and picks as we know. So Gruden definitely will be last to leave, unless Davis decides that Gruden and Mayock haven’t helped Carr enough and cans them first, which I don’t see happening without a big year with Carr visibly carrying the team somewhere in between. Gruden got a ten year deal, remember? So unless Carr stinks it up this year (who knows, it could happen), I think Mayock may be first to go.
This is a complete liberal diversion response to a question that has nothing to do with the subject.
Davante Adams: ‘No Chance’ For Packers Extension Before Season — The question
Are the Raiders committed to Carr?
Or Gruden?
Or Mayock..? — The retort…
Ak185 • — then your complete blow up away from anything to do with or supply an answer for the question?
The rest of us — Davante Adams ?
Didn’t mean to go off track. My bad.
You don’t have to apologize. This is a comment section and unlike clowns who bring politics into everything now, you were just sharing your own subjective FOOTBALL opinion.
Not that I’m apologizing, but I’ll certainly take any blame for ruffling some poor guy’s feathers.
And it was a simple question, in part based on this story, and the comment I replied to, but also some previous rumors and speculation regarding the maybe not so cemented futures of those 3 guy’s in Oakland/Vegas. Particularly Carr, who has been the subject of non-committal for like 3 years now.
I do find it odd that, while the entire thread WAS focused on football, the guy who whined about it being liberal blah blah blah, is the only one who actually thinks it was something other than football related.
If he’s smart he would sign with the Chiefs provided they have the cap space.
With what imaginary cap space?
The GM should flip him for a pick or 2 and tell 12 he got Cobb!
No chance before the season… which starts in 24 hours……
There is zero chance that I am getting a promotion in the next 24 hours as well…… Just saying?
Why wouldn’t you want to give Adams guaranteed money? He’s 28. Guarantee at least a couple of seasons. It’s doubtful that Adams will stink it up the next three years, barring major injury, which is a concern for any player. This differs from Pittsburgh because Gutekunst does not have a long history in Green Bay, unlike Colbert, who has given us a solid pattern of what to expect from him for the last decade. Also, Colbert has a history of success making GM decisions-Gutekunst hasn’t proven himself as one of the top GMs in the league as of 2021. Lastly, he doesn’t exactly have someone waiting to take the reigns from Adams as a number one, let alone as the league’s current best receiver. And, as good as Watt is, Adams has a longer history of success as a player. In order to act like Colbert, you’ve got to build the trust that he has. Gutekunst is already playing from behind with the receiver debacle, the Love trade/pick, and the bungling of the Rodgers incident earlier this year.
In this case, Adams is a pretty solid bet to receive more guaranteed money at age 28, and refusing to make a practical decision in order to stick to some weird philosophical rule (seems to be a common theme with Gutekunst) is just nonsensical. Adams is a homegrown talent who isn’t prohibitively old and has never, until this past year, been distracting (if you consider this or his mild Rodgers’ backing a distraction). He’s also the best receiver in the NFL, or at least arguably so, and you’re running a team that already has a group of discontent veterans who seemingly don’t trust you to reward them or build a winning unit.
Pay Adams his guarantees. If he goes, you’ll likely struggle to replace him and the others who are already grumbling or possibly discontent (Z. Smith, maybe Bakhtiari judging from the Matthews business) will notice.
I’ve concluded your either breaking in a new keyboard or trying to discover if your health provider covers carpal tunnel surgery.
Mostly, just a long winded blowhard.
Long winded blowhards presente!
Long’ish, fully thought-out and fleshed out comments are a welcome change here, IMHO.
Lol thanks cka2nd, I appreciate it. You two have good stuff in my mind, so I hope to at least keep up with y’all.
“too”
😉
Oh I meant both of-
oh, I see what you did there
Rodgers and Adams in DC next yr.. cap space available and right on the cusp
Not too many receivers out there north of 30 that are worth close to 30 million a year. (I get he’ll be 29 next year, but he’s not signing a 1-2 year deal)
Pack need to let him walk. Can’t sink that much into 1 player that doesn’t throw the ball.
He’s the kind of player the franchise tag was invented for. Tag him for a couple of prime years and then let him go get some other GM fired for tying up $100 million on a soon-to-be-declining veteran.
Problem with that is knowing if #12 if your QB next year or not.
If he is, then tagging Adams would make sense.
If he isn’t, there’s no reason to spend that money on him with Love at QB.
I expect to see the same scenario play out again next off season. Where ARod is going to want out and the packers will call his bluff and make him retire or play.
We’ll see…..
