Chandler Jones acknowledged his offseason trade request while chatting with reporters on Wednesday (Twitter link via Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic). However, the Cardinals defensive end says that he’s keeping his mind off of any contract issues and letting his agent handle matters.
Jones asked Arizona to deal him sometime in July. As it stands, the 31-year-old has one year and $15.5MM to go on his contract. He wants a new deal now — not in the spring — to cover the remainder of his prime and perhaps some post-prime seasons.
A short-term deal in the $20MM AAV neighborhood could make sense for both sides. At the same time, he doesn’t have a ton of leverage after losing much of 2020 to a biceps injury. In his five games, he registered eleven tackles, one sack, and seven QB hits. On the whole, he didn’t look like his usual self, even while healthy.
The Cardinals’ previous refusal to trade Jones signals a desire to stay the course with the three-time Pro Bowler. But, if talks do not progress in the coming weeks, he could be a potential trade candidate before the deadline.
Jones, winding down his five-year, $82.5MM deal, averaged 15 sacks per season across his first four years (2016-2019) in Arizona.
Doesn’t have much leverage? Dude just got 5 sacks in one game and has years of track record with one injured outlier year. He has plenty of leverage Zach. Teams would gladly line up to pay him 20 million
Thinking guy that wrote that, did it before Sunday & didn’t edit it.
He doesn’t proofread or edit most of his articles.
If there’s an article that has wrong information 99 outta 100 times it’s a Zack Links article. Big reason trade rumors has been going down hill is they lost a lot of their good writers and for some reason won’t replace links. Look no farther than that lattimore extension article where he claimed the saints played the bucs on Monday when in reality they played the packers on Sunday.
Considering the Twitter link he embedded was from this morning, it’s just a poorly written article with little analysis done
Bro he just had 5 sacks in the opener and you say he doesn’t have much leverage? Their pass rush was almost non existent without him for the past 4 years. Nobody else in the past decade has averaged 15 sacks in a season. He has all the leverage.
3/60 with half guaranteed is about where I’d see him getting paid.
A dumb team like the Jags or Lions wouldn’t even consider trading for him. They have the cash and need help everywhere. But they’ll never offer.
A smart team like the Ravens or NE, can figure out the money and make it happen.
I doubt either will sign him after the spending spree in NE and the EDGE moves (signing Houston in particular) in Baltimore, but I do agree with your premise. I imagine that the Titans in particular would be all over this, as their pass rush has been abysmal, but nearly any team would at least attempt a look at Jones. Arizona could get a good haul, even though they’d lose their only truly elite defender (with the exception of possibly Budda Baker). I think it’s the right move, personally, as Jones’ value is high and a team would get a large slate of games this year with him.
I like the Tenn side. They need help. My point is there is a difference between good & bad teams, not parity. Jax should have flipped their second 1st round pick to Balt for OT Brown. 24 year old LT & QB lined up in 1 draft. Not that hard to figure out. Well maybe it is!
The reality is AZ probably can’t get better than a 3 for him and if you are the Cards who need to get to the playoffs, you let him play it out and get the comp pick for him. If they were offered a 1 or even a 2 they would take it. But a 3 for the production he’ll likely have makes it worth it for them to hold him and take the comp pick(likely a 3).
So the pats could figure it out now but not when he was with them 4 years ago. Curious
Pats loss. Not the 1st time Bill wiffed. That dude has a ton of sacks.
Just another stupid move by beer drinking Steve Keim. He overpaid for JJ Watt who no longer is the elite player he once was and now leaving one of his own out to dry.
Beer drinking? That’s kind of a dumb attempt at an insult isn’t it? I mean, a ton of NFL fans drink beer.
Maybe the Vikings should send a them a sweet deal for Jones so we don’t have to face him this week.
judging by the fact that he’s on the field and doing quite well, I dont see why anyone’s angry at ARI’s approach.
Never overpay defensive players. Wins come from the offense. All those sacks, yet Jones’ team is 25-39 during his time in Arizona..
The Cowboys have the high priced offense but what has it got them? I’d rather invest in good young defenders like the Steelers are doing with Watt.
I think everyone would rather invest in a TJ Watt.. probably is they don’t come around that often.
