The Seahawks have released defensive end Aldon Smith (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo). He’ll be a full fledged free agent this week, but his off-the-field situation and conditioning might keep him off the field for a while.
Smith joined the Seahawks in April but was booked on a battery charge just days later. On top of that, Smith wasn’t in good enough shape to participate in minicamp this summer. The Seahawks were disappointed to say the least – Smith could have been a valuable addition to the front seven at a reasonable rate. His one-year deal was worth only $1.12MM with just $137K guaranteed.
With the former All-Pro edge defender out of the picture, the Seahawks will move forward with Carlos Dunlap, Benson Mayowa, and former 49er Kerry Hyder. They’ve also got former first-round pick L.J. Collier to help at defensive end.
Smith seemed to be on the right track after starting in all 16 games for the Cowboys last season. After missing full four years due to suspension, he finished out with five sacks, two fumble recoveries, and 14 quarterback hits.
Good never wanted the guy on the team.
Why not he fits right in w your other criminals
Who you talking about bro? The only player on the Seahawks roster who could even be remotely considered a “criminal,” is Alex Collins, who got in trouble like 3 years ago while a member of the Baltimore Ravens… Who are the Seahawks other criminals that you speak of?
Chad wheeler? Browner? Dunbar?
Ohhh didn’t realize you were talking about the all-time roster… If that’s the case the Seahawks are certainly in the majority of NFL teams employing “criminals” on their roster. None of those guys you mentioned are currently on the Seahawks roster. Also Dunbar had been cleared of all charges, and is a member of the Lions.
Chad Wheeler never played one down for the Hawks and was an offseason acquisition that got busted in the same offseason. That is kind of a stretch. But feel free to hate a winning organization all you want.
He was with SEA 2019-2021 and played in 5 games but still I know what ya mean
What an idiot. Two days after he signs he chokes someone unconscious. He will never change. The next news we will hear about this knucklehead will be his death. He has no rock bottom.
Jerry Jones on line one to bring him back
Not likely. The Cowboys let him walk after his performance leveled off the second half of last season. To think the Seahawks almost traded for him last year.
Well, to be fair to Jones, the Cowboys were the only one of Aldon Smith’s teams with which he did NOT get into trouble, so I have to give him credit for that.
To the Cowboys credit, they seem to have developed a program that helps “high risk” individuals stay out of trouble for the most part. They still have their share of guys who get in trouble, but considering their willingness to roll the dice on players with troubled pasts, their record is pretty good. I would have bet against Dez Bryant lasting 10 yrs in the league for sure.
I think it’s silly to suggest that the Cowboys have a program that helps keep “high risk” players out of trouble. If that were the case, every other team in the league would be trying to copy it. Like other teams, they only gamble on troubled players when the risk/reward ratio is quite favorable. Aldon stayed out of trouble sure, but the Cowboys didn’t have a magic wand that made it happen.
Some teams are acknowledged as better than others in that regard. A lot of that comes down to the staff rather than the program-how easily they can gain the players’ trust, their instincts, their personal history, etc.
In the MLB, the Rangers were a famous example. When Josh Hamilton played there, the team devised an entire structure dedicated to keeping him out of trouble and focused on the field. They did a good job mostly, even with the occasional slip. When Hamilton went to the Angels, that lack of structure apparently affected him and his play. That’s the example that comes to my mind. I don’t know if Dallas has that or anything notable, but it is possible for some teams to have particularly successful programs dedicated to that.
Every off season we see a huge number of staff and coaching changes throughout the league so I don’t think you could count on that to work in any sustainable way. Goodell of course, has ranted on for years about how much support the NFL gives to troubled players but all the evidence clearly shows his rhetoric is nothing more than PR bull—-.
what a piece of human debris
Or perhaps he has mental health issues.
I have mental health issues. Its never made me commit stupid crimes or harm other people. Let’s not group “mental health issues” and “human piece of sh*t” together.
So you’re implying there’s only one kind of mental health issue?
‘ The Seahawks were disappointed to say the least’
If they were disappointed, then they haven’t been paying attention. This is nothing new.
What, why would they not be disappointed in losing a All-Pro caliber player?
Smith hasn’t been an All-Pro in quite some time.
True. Probably doesn’t play at that level anymore. But my point was, why wouldn’t you be disappointed in loosing a player with his skill set and potential?
I think a better way to say would be that I’d be disappointed that Smith hadn’t committed to being that player. I think I’d feel more grifted by Smith than I would feel frustrated that I couldn’t use him. Seattle signed him believing that he had changed, and then he showed that he hadn’t-at least, not enough. I think they’re more ticked about his decision-making than they are sad that they lost a possible producer.
Yupyup!
$137k for hardly any work. Not bad if you can get it
I get paid at least $137k every day and spend 10 mins on my comp. I can show you how you just need to pay $137k for the copyright material.
Oh yes where do I give my social security number
So it appears as though Aldon is ALL DONE. (Sorry, I must be suffering from Nentwigs Syndrome).
Lol it could be worse. We could use a few more good hearted guys like nentwigs around
We sport fans often take ourselves far too seriously and are over sensitive so I support what nentwigs is trying to do. Just not sure his schtick has the long term staying power he imagines.
A shame. Someone with a world of talent, but not quite right in the head. I hope he finds the help he needs.
Seems odd that he could play all of last season but not be in good enough shape to participate in minicamp. There must be more to that story.
And crybaby Randy Gregory feels that coaches played favorites with this guy last year and that’s why he didn’t get more action. Hilarious how some of these guys (Gregory, for example) are afraid to look into the mirror and face reality.
