The Packers have released Devin Funchess with an injury settlement, per the league’s transactions wire. Between this and last year’s opt-out, Funchess’ Packers run will end without having ever played a game for Green Bay.
This was the expected move after the Packers placed Funchess on IR earlier this week. Funchess has not played since his 2019 stint with the Colts, which was really more like a cup of coffee. That season ended midway through the season opener thanks to a broken collarbone. Funchess earned $10MM in salary that year — this time, he’ll leave with a portion of his one-year, $1.2MM contract.
The Panthers selected Funchess in the second round of the 2015 draft, but he has yet to put it all together in the pros. He enjoyed the best year of his career in 2017, compiling 63 receptions for 840 yards and eight touchdowns. Still, it’s worth noting that it took him 111 targets to get those 63 grabs.
With Funchess out of the picture, the Packers will move forward with Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, and Randall Cobb as their top WRs.
As expected. Unfortunate for both parties, as Funchess needed a strong showing this year to show that he was still valuable and the Packers needed a big possession receiver. Unfortunately (there’s that word again), this has shades of Juwan James alongside it. I’d like to see how many of the players who opted out end with injuries this year statiscally.
As for Funchess, I think he might still have another deal left in him, but Funchess will be fighting for a chance to prove himself if he doesn’t want this to be his last contract.
52% career catch ratio does not a big bodied possession receiver make. Possession receivers should have close to 70% catch ratios for their teams to make the playoffs and make a run in the playoffs.
What makes Antonio Brown or Julio Jones or Stefon Diggs so valuable? They catch the damn ball.
I said that’s what the Packers needed, not what they ended up getting. Funchess is big, and yes, his playstyle is as a possession receiver. Just because he’s not always good at it doesn’t mean he’s not that type of player. A possession receiver with a 52% catch rate is still a possession receiver, just not a great one.
Funchess is certainly a burner or a route runner or what not. The Packers needed him to step up and do that job. He needed to prove that he could. Obviously, like I said, neither party got what they wanted. So I’m not sure what your point is, other than that Funchess disappointed, which is what I said.
He must not be a “team” guy, or they would have held onto him with possibility of reinstating him. Although, the Packers were 8 deep with him at WR.
Because he was put on I.R. before the season started, he was or is ineligible to be reinstated this year.
It’s a little perplexing what really happened here, but I’m not sure why it means something shady took place. And I don’t think a team can just put a guy on I.R. because he’s not a “team” guy. Pretty sure an actual injury is required
I’ve heard reports from Packers beat writers that he was not a very popular guy in the locker room. Not exactly a team friendly attitude and issues with effort. But this is just what I’ve heard, so take it with a grain of salt
It’s funny because Aaron Rodgers got RAILED for being selfish and for bringing in “his friends” and for being vocal about being against joint team scrimmages.
So here he wants Cobb back. Cobb is a career near 70% catch rate receiver who plays slot. Prior to the acquisition the depth chart for slot included a 3rd round rookie. So added depth at a thin position by giving up virtually nothing in return and adding depth in general to WRs.
Rodgers is vocal about not liking joint team scrimmages and here we go with a guy getting hurt in a joint team scrimmage.
It’s almost like the opinion of a 3x MVP, 3X All pro, super bowl winning QB future HOF QB is valuable or something.
