The Bears brought in both Andy Dalton and Justin Fields this offseason, leaving Nick Foles in an awkward spot. He’s currently getting paid a lot of money for a third-string quarterback, so it’s been thought all offseason that a trade could be logical if the right situation arose.
That may have just happened with the Carson Wentz foot injury in Indianapolis. It’s looking like Wentz may miss a significant chunk of regular season time, and Indy doesn’t have any great options to fill-in right now. Foles happened to speak to the media Monday, and appeared to be angling for a trade to the Colts without outright saying it.
Foles raved about Colts head coach Frank Reich, saying “listen, Frank Reich is one of my favorite, if not favorite, coaches of all time,” (Twitter link via Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network). He revealed that there were already a couple of trade opportunities that came the Bears’ way but said “I don’t want to go to someone I don’t know,” (Twitter link via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune).
For what it’s worth, veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson was told the Colts have had no “substantive ‘pt-to-pt’ talks” with the Bears about trading for Foles yet (Twitter link). It seems to be a real possibility and Indy could make it happen but “everybody, including Carson Wentz, would have to be onboard,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says (Twitter video link).
Of course, Foles filled in for an injured Wentz during the Eagles’ legendary Super Bowl run while Reich was Philly’s OC, so there’s a lot of history here that could complicate things.
Meanwhile, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets the financial breakdown of what Foles would be owed if acquired in a trade. He’s got a $4MM guaranteed salary for 2021. In 2022 he’s got a guaranteed $4MM roster bonus with a $4MM base salary ($1MM of which is guaranteed). Essentially the Colts would have to pay him $4MM this year and at least $5MM next year if they traded for him. Nothing seems imminent, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear more.
You can’t do better than Nick Foles.
Surprised Indy or NY hasn’t made a call.
I think Indy basically just did. In the NBA, it would be considered tampering I think.
The Colts could win more games with Frank behind center than Foles.
Everyone knows he’s a statue back there. But I think he’d do fine behind that badass Colt’s line. The Bears gave him lousy protection last season.
You know Wentz would throw a fit if Foles somehow ends up the starting QB for them. And watch Foles do really solid playing this year, but is given the starting job on a different team and is terrible lol
Nick parlayed that SB run to tens of millions! Fleeced Jax, then Da Bears.
With the right coaching staff Foles is a above average QB
Your saying that in 9 years and with 5 teams, Foles hasn’t encountered any good coaches? Seems improbable to say the least.
I mean, he played well in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, and the 2017 postseason. To say he’s never been good would be rather oblivious.
Not someone you want as your starter, but not a bad insurance option for a team with a good supporting cast (like the Colts). He also has plenty of familiarity with Reich
You’ve been gone from the site for quite a while. Welcome back.
Wagner! And with an avatar!
I’d like to see how Eason fares thru camp and the preseason before anything happens.
They can’t wait that long. They’ll have to bring someone in asap for reps and to learn the system.
I think the Eagles’ system is pretty close to what the Colts run. Foles would be fine and I doubt any other team is looking at him. Not to mention that Wentz may only be out a few games. Maybe Eason can hold down the fort for a short time.
Indy is built to win now. Foles could definitely help this team, this is his speciality starting a handful of games a time.
This situation will be very telling on Wentz. If they don’t trade for Foles bc of Wentz this will confirm all the drama we’ve heard around him the past year or so. If he signs off, than much of that was probably false and he is serious about winning.
Excellent point. This will all be very telling.
If they’re in dire need of a solid place holder, Carson’s whims are the least of their problems.
With that contract they should just throw a 7th rounder in there to get him
I would love to see Foles go to Indy. That would be great.
The biggest issue I have with Foles is that he’d be signed on for not one but two years. Having him around for two years would be too much.
$9M/ 2 years for one of the better backup QBs in the NFL seems ok to me.
That would depend on which Nick Foles you end up getting.
In any case, trading for Foles means in all likelihood that you’re dropping Hundley afterward (which is obvious and expected) but also probably Jacob Eason or Sam Ehlinger, who they drafted. Nobody is keeping four QBs on a roster. I’d guess Eason, considering the fact that he’s been there longer, but Indy seems like they drafted them to try and develop at least one into a contributor. I don’t know if trading for Foles would be their method-I think that they think they’re good enough to hold themselves over until Wentz returns.
I’d rather the Bears trade away that busted QB that they just drafted. It’s insane in the brain that they drafted someone who’s literally a proven bust and traded up to get him as we all know OSU has never produced any Hall of Fame-caliber QBs, ever.
