The Jaguars have agreed to sign wide receiver/kick returner Tavon Austin (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo). Terms of the deal are not yet known, but it’s likely a low-cost, one-year deal.
Austin signed with the 49ers in August of 2020, but was placed on injured reserve before the season started. After his release, he hooked on with the Packers. At the time of signing, the Packers didn’t seem to have much depth at WR beyond Davante Adams, but Austin didn’t see a ton of action on offense. All in all, he finished with five catches for 20 yards across four games.
Austin, the eighth overall pick of the 2013 draft, has been used more as a gadget player and returner than a true receiver in recent years. He may still offer big play ability, although at 31 he’s not quite as explosive as he used to be. Austin may get a chance to return punts for the Jaguars, but he’ll have to solidify his roster spot over the next few weeks.
Give this dude credit. He’s figured out a way to keep cashing them checks for almost a decade. Not sure how.
Not sure how is right. He adds nothing to an offense
it’s because his name sounds like that of a good player, is my guess.
Both the Rams and Bills didn’t benefit from this 2013 draft trade with the Bills taking EJ Manuel
I dunno, I think they got more mileage out of Manuel than Austin.
Well, the Jags figure to run a wide open college offense that would suit Austin and other players who are more athletes than true receivers. He may end up contributing more than we expected, so this could be good for him. I wouldn’t expect that he leads the team in any statistical category, but Austin may have a few good moments in this offense. I don’t expect much out of the offense overall, mind you, but he seems suited for it if it is as similar to Meyer’s past projects as we expect. Thing is, that’s also sort of the skill set that Westbrook offered the Jags, albeit under a different regime.
Besides, Austin has some value as a returner, so Jacksonville could get mileage out of him there.
The way the Jags figure it is that if you sign enough bad receivers you can eventually make Tebow look like a good option.
If the Jaquars have room for this guy on their roster you know their rebuild has a ways to go.
