The Colts may be without Carson Wentz for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean the team will pursue a trade. Chris Mortensen reports (via Twitter) that Indy won’t be making a trade for the likes of Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew, or Marcus Mariota.

The reporter notes that Wentz could begin rehabbing his foot after two weeks and “hasn’t been ruled out” for Week 1 (although he admits this is an optimistic timeline). Mortensen opines that if the “relatively safe surgery and rehab” happens to go awry, then the team could reconsider a trade for a quarterback. The organization did provide a rather wide timeline for Wentz’s return, with head coach Frank Reich suggesting that the recent acquisition could be back within five to 12 weeks. The early side of that timeline could see Wentz on the field against the Seahawks to begin the year.
Following news of Wentz’s impending foot surgery, we learned that the Colts wouldn’t be pursuing a trade for Foles, who’s currently buried on the Bears depth chart. It makes sense that the sentiment would apply to other signal callers; Minshew and Mariota wouldn’t be available for cheap, and the Colts front office probably isn’t willing to give up assets for what could end up being a backup.
With Wentz temporarily sidelined, the Colts will instead move ahead with their collection of backups. 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason should see a larger role, although it’s worth noting that the quarterback has barely seen the field in three of the past four years (including his time in college). The Colts also recently added Brett Hundley, but the veteran hasn’t started a game since he went 3-6 in nine games with the Packers in 2017.
Philip Rivers could come out of retirement
Don’t think he would only to be Wentz’s backup. Besides, he just had another 3 kids.
Bey-Bey’s no doubt!
I think this is just postering. I think they want to make a trade but are telling teams we won’t over pay and please do not get our fans hopes up for something that may not happen. The best long term solution is to do nothing and wait till he comes back. But we are not playing Madden. You are telling your players and fans we give up on this year and will try again next year.
They told their fans they were giving up when they traded for Wentz.
Before the year even starts.
Hopefully Eason doesn’t suck and go Curtis Painter on the Colts.
Not making a trade would show confidence in Eason and young QBs rarely perform well without it.
Well, Curtis Painter landed you Andrew Luck.
So if Jacob Eason lands you the #1 overall pick..you get your choice of QB. Or can trade that pick to offset losing picks to Philly for Wentz.
Not the worst outcome long term.
The problem is the rest of the roster is too good to end up with the #1 overall pick. Without a solid QB this is probably still a 5 to 7 win team
By needing surgery without taking a hit, well Wentz has outdone even himself. Once recovered he’ll be back in the line of fire and he hasn’t held up under that for the last few seasons.
2021 Games Over/Under is five…..
I’ll take the under.
The Bears should be dumping Foles to Indy for whatever they can get, as burning $6+ million for a third string QB isn’t smart from a GM perspective.
If you were the Bears GM, what would you be willing to accept in a Foles trade?
I doubt Indy is giving up players, unless it’s one of drafted QBs in Ehlinger or Eason. I think it’d have to be picks. The Bears should take what they can get as Foles will most likely not play this year and is counting a decent amount (not crippling, but noticeable) against the cap.
If I’m in Pace’s shoes, I’d take anything a fourth or below, and if I’m in Ballard’s, I’m offering nothing greater than a fifth (that is, if I were to do the trade). Thing is, if the Colts thought that the trade is really necessary for Foles and I’m wrong about giving up players, Marlon Mack is the obvious way to preserve picks.
Mack had a major injury, but is a year removed from being a productive starter. I’m not as high on him as others, as I think that the line from that year ended up as one of the best in the league (if not the best), but he was very productive before the injury, much moreso than any of the Bears’ backs. The Colts seem willing to move on from him, and the injury makes Mack’s value recede in combination with his reduced role. Because of Foles’ salary and Mack’s filling a need, the Bears might even add a low pick or swap another to move the Colts up. Foles for Mack could be an interesting prospect if the Colts change their minds and decide to trade for a QB while retaining picks. I’m not suggesting that they do, just that it could work.
The Colts need to do whatever they need to try to contend this year. Don’t waste that talented defense.
Ruh Roh. Q is down now too. Going to be an interesting year.
As a huskie fan who watched Eason closely I .didn’t then and still don’t see a good qb. He is extremely erratic makes bad throws gets panicked easy and just isn’t good. He has a great arm. And that’s all I see w him.
