Following yesterday’s arrest, Richard Sherman was released from jail this evening without bail, per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times (via Twitter). Sherman doesn’t face any felony charges, but the judge still found probable cause on four offenses (via ESPN): “misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass in the second degree and malicious mischief in the third degree — both carrying domestic violence designations — and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and driving under the influence.”
The judge declined to set bail, describing Sherman as a “pillar of the community” while observing that this was the athlete’s first arrest. The judge set several conditions, including no contact with Sherman’s father-in-law, no use of alcohol or nonprescription drugs, and no possession of a weapon. Sherman’s next hearing is set for Friday.
As CBS Sports Legal Analyst Amy Dash notes on Twitter, Sherman is unlikely to see any additional jail time. As a result of the misdemeanor charges and the player’s lack of criminal history, it’s more likely that Sherman strikes a deal that sees him going on “probation with conditions, community service, and a program.”
The ESPN report provides a few more details on Wednesday morning’s arrest. Officers were reportedly “cautious about arresting Sherman because of his size, strength and belligerence,” and they ultimately released a police dog that caused a minor cut on the player’s ankle. Further, back in February, prosecutors ordered an “extreme risk protection order,” which prevented Sherman from possessing guns after it was determined the 33-year-old was a danger to himself and others. Sherman’s wife later told police that her husband had been using antidepressants and was receiving counseling.
An NFL spokesman previously confirmed that Sherman could face discipline from the league depending on the outcome of the case (Twitter link). Today’s developments would likely bode well for Sherman’s chances of avoiding a suspension.
Shouldn’t we be moving on to the Haskin’s getting assaulted now?
if sherman signs with seattle, you should be able to count that as community service.
“Pillar of the community”? Ironic, didn’t he crash into a pillar in the community earlier that night?
Nice pun, but he really has been a pillar of the community. Also mental health and football players (or anyone else) is nothing to joke about. Hopefully he continues to get treatment and comes out the other side.
He should be held accountable for his crimes but who knows there are politicians who do way worse and never see a day behind bars so who really knows what’s right and wrong, who’s to say these days.
He’s lucky he didn’t kill someone when he was shltfaced driving around though
He absolutely should be held accountable and without question it’s lucky that no one but he was physically hurt.
Was the report that he was involved in a hit and run wrong?
The idea of a misdemeanor hit and run seems crazy.
He hit a barrier and abandoned his car. He didn’t hit anyone or any other car.
“He hit a barrier and abandoned his car”
Reads pretty much like a Websters Definition of “Hit and Run” … Just saying.
i meam, like most crimes, there are likely levels. im no legal expert, but the difference between striking someone or just colliding with an object is probably important in this case.
Any luckily it was an object and not some innocent people as often happens in drunk driving accidents. Had he not done extensive damage to his car maybe he keeps driving until he takes out some mom running to the store in the mini van for some diapers and formula.
Dark side you’re correct. Hit and run with merely property damage is a misdemeanor (in California at least) even if the driver is DUI. You have to cause injury for it to be elevated to a felony. I assume Washington state is the same.
“Hit and Run” to me, at least, means you hit another person or another person in a vehicle and left the scene to avoid arrest.
This sounds like “leaving the scene of an accident” which is irresponsible and not good, but isn’t the same as harming another.
Mpleau –
He didn’t know the car was abandoned when he hit it. Got real lucky on that one. What a stupid comment to make. Use your brain sometime
Didn’t know what car was abandoned? Reread the story he hit a pillar and abandoned his car.
Speaking of stupid comments and using a brain, why do so many people chime in with faulty details or pure speculation when so much of the facts have been reported as well as the 911 call? Especially with one genius here calling out somebody else and they couldn’t be more wrong. SMH…
I wonder if Mr. Sherman will sign with an agent.
Having a firm that understands media, can explain an incident, and work with people to smooth things over probably sounds pretty good right now.
that’s called a lawyer
Wasn’t it his wife helping represent him on his previous deals?
Upon his release, reportedly stated by SHERMAN,
TANKS !!
Side note – the dispatcher that took the call from Sherman’s wife needs to be fired immediately. Sickening listening to her speak to someone in the middle of a crisis
In general, dispatchers aren’t great – especially at 2am. If you want to hear a good one, look up the Cleveland kidnap rescue call maybe 10 years ago. Woman was held captive for like a decade, breaks out, calls 911, gives information and the dispatcher hung up on her and said something like an officer will come to you when available.
This is sounding scarily like bits of CTE from an incredibly smart player. Hope not but some rough times for him.
Hope Sherm and everyone involved is okay. Mental health is not something to take lightly.
Stupidity is not a mental health issue!
During his off the rails driving, I can picture Sherman conversing with the lizard from GEICO buckled in the backseat having a Stan from Eminem conversation.
I’m in the car right now, I’m doing 90 on the freeway
Hey Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka
You dare me to drive?
You know the song by Phil Collins, “In the Air of the Night”
About that guy who could a saved that other guy from drowning
But didn’t, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?
That’s kinda how this is, you could a rescued me from drowning
Haha…that Phil Collins story is an urban legend. But good analogy
When he was released from jail was his Mom standing ready with some chunky Campbells soup?
The dude has never played with a full deck.
The new Forrest Gump of the NFL!
Rules for thee, but not for me. Pillar of the community? Yeah, OK.
