The Packers and wide receiver Davante Adams have ended their long-term extension talks (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). There are no current plans to resume them, putting the Packers star on course for free agency after the 2021 season.
The two sides have been talking for months now, but they’ve made little in the way of progress. Rapoport hears that things are “now in a bad place,” so the Packers have now rankled both Adams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Adams has been pushing to be the league’s highest-paid wide receiver, or something close to it. However, the Packers’ latest offer would have left him shy of DeAndre Hopkins, who holds the top spot with $27.25MM per year on average. Titans receiver Julio Jones is (a distant) second to him with a $22MM AAV. Adams, meanwhile, signed his extension before the WR market ballooned in 2018. As it stands, he’s just the NFL’s 18th-highest-paid receiver with $14.5MM on average.
Adams won’t turn 29 until December and he ranks as one of the NFL’s premier wideouts. The Packers, to their credit, did well to lock Adams down before he had compiled a 1,000-yard season. Now, the Fresno State alum has two 1,000-yard campaigns and a 997-yard 2019, a season in which he played just 12 games. Last year, Adams led the NFL with 98.1 receiving yards per game.
Aaron Jones and the Packers broke off talks last year, too..
Guntekunst is doing a bang up job…..
I wouldn’t pay a receiver 27 mill a year either.. after 20 and getting close to 30 yrs old is a mistake
10000000% agree. I don’t care for Gute, but he’s not worth 27 million a year or possibly more as he’s close to 30.
Even more so if ARod is indeed gone and the rebuild is starting.
Then Guntekunst should say as much. Let know what they offers were so fans can get off his back.
I think that the case would be made that Adams may have accepted a lesser contract had Gutekunst not ticked him off, or if Adams believed that the team took good care of its players (his belief is currently that they do not, given the Rodgers situation).
Remember, Adams signed his previous extension with the prior regime. He has no experience working with Gutekunst and no reason to trust him in good faith in negotiations. Receivers may not be worth $27 million a year (and, to be fair, we have no idea what Adams would turn down money-wise), but in this climate, eventually Green Bay will be forced to approach that number with a homegrown star or a free agent. It’s not ideal but if you were going to do it anyway, you may as well do it with your own player.
I personally think Adams would have taken less if Gutekunst had resolved the Rodgers situation better and showed more long term commitment to older players. Rodgers and Adams are in similar points in their careers in that they’re still at the top of their game, but may be close to not being there. They want commitment that they won’t be tossed aside, which happens frequently.
Rodgers and Adam’s not in same points in career. Rodgers 11 years older. Giving Adams 27 million a year for 4 years is crazy. GM’s see cap problems 5 years in future. Fans have tunnel vision. Rodgers and Adams have last year together , then move on to the Love Era! With a butt load of cap space and handful of draft choices from Rodgers and maybe more if they move Adams at deadline
What, looking out for franchise future. Paying Adams 27 million a year is crazy. Trade him for a first rounder at deadline and move on.
Welcome to the franchise tag for 2022z
Can definitely see him holding out
Pretty hard to negotiate a long term contract with that big unknown of Rodgers contract status hanging out there. As far as we know, the cap figure could swing wildly depending on what happens over the next 6 months. How would the Pack even know what they can afford at this point? Adams has been great, and he deserves the opportunity to see what the market will bring. That doesn’t mean the Pack won’t still make an offer at some point.
Can they afford to lose their 2 best players? Not without a revolt in Wisconsin.
But I thought the fans owned the team?? I am sure that the “stockholders” have a say in all of this, right?
DeAndres contract was absurd.my gut tells me Adam’s is a great system receiver playing with a top notch QB. If he signs elsewhere he becomes an average to above average QB like most other GB and NE standouts who leave
“My gut tells me Adams is a great system receiver….”
That’s the most laughable, ridiculous statement I’ve ever read on ANY board.
What’s the point of actually watching football in your world?
“My gut tells me Adams is a great system receiver…”
Your gut? Seriously? Who asked you?? FYI no one is obligated to share an opinion on a topic they admittedly have no clue about.
Adams is great but I agree. He’s not THE most talented in the league. Perhaps a #10 overall receiver if was playing with any other QB.
Your gut? Are you sure it’s not just indigestion?
If Rodgers plays in GB so will Adams. If Rodgers sits or plays elsewhere, I predict hammy issues all season long.
Adams is no fool. He’ll know how the Rodgers/Love situation plays out before deciding on his next move. The franchise tag is probably in his future anyway.
Terrible Franchise, Green Bay won’t be good for a long time once rodgers and adams dip
“They” said the same thing when Favre bailed too. Then look what happened.
Did they really?
The Pack’s top receivers and running back and entire starting OL from 2007, Favre’s last year, all returned in 2008. Pretty much the only change on the offense was at QB. It was the defense falling from 6th in points allowed to 22nd that seems to have been responsible for the Pack losing 10 games in Rodgers’ first season as a starter (the offense only slipped from 4th to 5th in points scored), but it bounced back in 2009 and 2010, so I’m not sure how many people could have projected the 2008 tumble.
At this point, if the Packers are thinking about trading Rodgers, they should also think about trading Adams as well. Do a total teardown and get a bunch of picks.
Yep & what does this say about Love? I mean if he was worth a hoot, Adams would be talking right?
That’s a dumb take. It’s about money. He probably couldn’t care less who’s throwing to him. As long as he gets paid as the top receiver he’s good to go.
I don’t know. It may or may not be about money, but I absolutely assure you that Adams cares about who is throwing to him. That doesn’t mean that he WON’T play with Love, but it may mean that he’d take less to play with Rodgers.
I think older players would rather see commitment than money for the most part.
He wants to be the highest paid receiver and the Cardinals paid Hopkins stupid money. I love Davante but not at $27-28 million per season. Plus he wants to see what happens with Rodgers.
Depending on what the salary cap looks like in 2023 and beyond, you might have to get used to numbers like that.
Agreed with both posts. The Cardinals did just something extremely stupid with Hopkins, which is why other teams facepalmed at it when it happened. They’ll be adjusting that contract as soon as Murray’s is up. But the damage has been done at this point-other receivers have seen it and the ball is already rolling on their new deals.
The GM just needs to be fired along with the President!!! Idiots in charge are so incompetent!!
Yes because they didn’t let the biggest crybaby in NFL History have his way? When was the last time your boss came to you and said hey we are doing these changes is it ok?
How many QBs did GB draft while Farve was under contract? Was that ever an issue for him? It’s the way the game is played!!!!!
If incompetent bosses listened to their most valuable employees, they may get an idea or two. It’s okay for bosses to ignore employee opinions, so long as they are competent bosses. Not ideal, but okay. Otherwise that boss may have to get used to that employee…leaving.
LOL. Talks never “end” until the player signs or signs somewhere else. This is simply posturing. The other term that comes to mind is “negotiating”.
