It was reported almost a month ago that a Jamal Adams extension with the Seahawks could be imminent, and that something was likely to get done around the start of training camp. That apparently might not longer be the case.
Negotiations between Adams’ camp and the Seahawks have been “slow-going”, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported on SportsCenter recently, via Corbin K. Smith of SI.com. Fowler said that it’s “a situation that could bleed through training camp, even possibly close to Week 1,” according to NBC Sports Edge. Adams is apparently “willing to bet on himself,” and Seattle understands that.
We heard recently that Adams wasn’t just looking to become the league’s highest-paid safety, he was looking to enter a tier of his own. The sixth overall pick of the 2017 draft reportedly wants to be treated like his own unique position and not be grouped in with other safeties on the market.
Given his historic pass-rushing production from the safety position, it’s understandable. Meanwhile, John Clayton of 710 ESPN Seattle writes that it’s “pretty clear” the two sides “are not close to a contract extension.” Clayton thinks Adams’ deal “should come in” around $16MM a year, but that if he wants $17-18MM, that “would be a problem for the Seahawks.”
The former LSU and Jets star has some leverage here, since the Seahawks gave up two first-round picks to trade for him last July. It would be a very bad look for the franchise if they weren’t able to lock him up long-term. With training camp rapidly approaching, we should hear a lot more soon.
Adams should be asking for $20m a year. It’s not his draft picks he traded away.
He’s such a headache, aside from the fact that he’s basically a decent weak side linebacker with horrible coverage skills.
How is he a headache? All I’ve seen is a guy that balled out even playing they injury. He’s not talking in the media yet you are lapping up the fake news of Fowler as gospel.
As for the coverage, word is that he could barely lift his arm above his shoulder for over half the season. His coverage ratings prior to last year were fine.
$22m a year! They traded for him, now pay up. Seahawks management knew this before the trade, why whimper now?
“It would be a very bad look for the franchise if they weren’t able to lock him up long-term”.
The Seahawks through a 1 yard interception in a game to cost themselves a SB title so I doubt they are concerned about “a very bad look” here.
With the game MVP in the backfield.
EVERYONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD KNEW THEY WERE GONNA RUN THE BALL!!
The call to pass was brilliant, the execution was terrible.
Some things (like shooting yourself in the foot) are not brilliant, no matter how good the execution is.
No, it wasn’t. A play-action pass would have been brilliant. Realizing that there was still plenty of time to run and then have another snap to throw would have been brilliant. A fade to your 6’5” receiver who was having a career day might even been brilliant. That slant, the most basic and common pass in football, was not brilliant.
Hey Seattle next time do your DD on the guy before you over pay on a trade.
Yeah, I remember when it was Jimmy Graham that wanted WR money, because he was flexed out and used more in the slot and out wide than he was used as an in-line TE.
This is what happens when you have hybrid players, but the only guy I can recall that just shattered his positions pay was Kyle Juscyk or Juice lol..
However, I feel he really deserved that, because not only was he an excellent FB, BUT ALSO then he could be used as a TE and catch passes.
The problem with Graham and Adams in this case, is that they are hybrid players because they aren’t complete players at their position. Adams struggles in coverage at times, and Graham wasn’t a good blocker.
Even so, still Adams does do alot of things well, and he isn’t a complete liability in coverage either. He’s an excellent, versatile player, and with what Seattle gave up for him like with the Hou trade for Tunsil, Adams has all the leverage!!
Might want to fix last sentence in first paragraph. Not usually a grammar critic but it seems proof reading is a dying art.
If they don’t lock him up long term that trade will set us back way too much. Adams has Seattle over a barrel and knows it. Seattle had to know it too when they traded for him.
Maybe should have done a sign and trade deal. He knows they will have to bow to his wishes. That is unless they can trade him but tough to get a 1st rnd pick with the contract issue. Hopefully Adams will realize what Seattle gave up and make some concessions. I think players need to get what they can never know what the future holds.
Trade the jerk.
He’s a gadget on a swiss army knife. He can’t cover, he doesn’t play in a system, he wants to be a rover leaving the other 10 players on the defense wondering who is uncovered that he should have been covering.
Trade the jerk.
You should really educate yourself before looking like a fool on here.
What are you talking about? If he doesn’t trip all over himself to sign the first thing the Hawks offer, he’s a jerk?
Sigh,
I’m glad the Cowboys avoided this. The draft capital and salary just isn’t worth it. Not many defensive players would be.
It will get worked out like these things always do. Fowler knows nothing in regards to where things stand and if he’s wrong he won’t be held accountable for it either. He has nothing to lose by floating “his sources”.
The Seahawks can simply franchise tag Adams for the next two seasons for a total of about $30 million, so they aren’t really out of leverage either.
They’d prefer a longer term deal, of course, but it’s not like Adams is going to be let go after the season, and the Seahawks would avoid the injury risk that comes with a long term deal.
Adam’s would go nuts if he got tagged and force his way out…again.
