Jets assistant coach Greg Knapp has passed away. His agent, Jeff Sperbeck, announced the tragic news this evening (per Mike Klis of 9News in Denver on Twitter).
We learned earlier this week that Knapp was battling life-threatening injuries after being involved in a bicycle accident. The 58-year-old was riding his bike when he was struck by a motorist in California. Knapp never regained consciousness following the accident. According to an ESPN report, the driver of the vehicle was cooperating with police, and drugs and/or alcohol were not believed to be a factor.
Knapp had served as a coach for more than three decades. After spending nine years at Sacramento State, Knapp made his way to the NFL. He served as offensive coordinator for a number of teams, including the 49ers, Falcons, Raiders, and Seahawks. He spent the past few years serving as a QB coach for the Texans, Raiders, Broncos, and Falcons, and he was hired by the Jets to be the pass-game specialist earlier this offseason. Per Sperbeck, Knapp worked with a long list of quarterbacks throughout his career, including Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, Rick Mirer, Matt Schaub, Michael Vick, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, and (most recently) Zach Wilson.
“Greg is such an amazing individual it is hard to imagine the challenge facing him and his family,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said earlier this week (via ESPN). “Greg’s fun nature, kind disposition, and wealth of knowledge has allowed him to make genuine connections with all of our coaches, players and staff since he has been here.”
We here at PFR would like to extend our condolences to Knapp’s family, friends, and colleagues.
Rip

May his memory be a blessing.
Prayers for peace to his loved ones. May his soul rest in God’s arms.
Nicely said !!!
Beautifully said. Blessings and peace to his family and friends.
Terribly sad news. His loss will set back Wilson’s assimilation to NFL ball by at least half a season; maybe even more.
Look for the NYJ to pick up a veteran backup type soon.
Horrific news. RIP.
Can we please rethink our crazy laws that say bikes and cars should share the same space?
If a person on a bike hits a person on a sidewalk, someone might scrape a knee.
Cars and bicycles on city streets are a deadly mix. Things like this don’t have to happen, or at least don’t have to happen nearly as often.
It’s tragic when a healthy young man dies-especially as like it sounds. I get your point…stricter and more consistent applied penalties for unsafe driving is part of the solution. So many drivers since the pandemic drive like morons acting as if their time is more precious. I’m not sure if there’s much in on comprehensive studies are in yet, but the prevalence of excessive speeds on our nations highways is disturbing.
Pedestrians can and have been killed by bicyclists.
Let’s see if this link works. link to nyc.streetsblog.org
We need to look to cities like Copenhagen to figure out how to make the roads work for all. I think Real Sports with Bryant Gumble had a recent report on this very subject.
RIP Greg
Prayers to his family
sad new. I do however wonder how the accident happened was it one of those the car hit em and should have seen em or one of those where the rider just thinks they do whatever they want and gets hit. I’ve seen both. either way it’s sad. I do hope that he was at fault and not totally innocent as that’s worse when they are totally innocent and do not contribute to they own death.
Heard the motorist did stop and try to help. If he was speeding or texting then motorist in trouble. Your life just ending that soon is sad
RIP Praying for his friends and family
This is such sad news. RIP. Condolences to the family.
