Tampa Bay return specialist Jaydon Mickens is facing two misdemeanor gun charges as a result of his arrest earlier this year. According to TMZ Sports, Mickens was pulled over on March 5 because the tint on his vehicle was too dark, and during the stop, police observed a gun inside the car.
Prosecutors are moving forward with the case, and both charges carry a maximum of one year in jail. Even if he doesn’t ultimately face that type of criminal penalty, Mickens could certainly be subject to league discipline.
Mickens, 27, signed with the Raiders as a UDFA in 2016. He joined the Jaguars in 2017 and established himself as a quality punt returner, taking back 27 punts for 287 yards and a score. After an injury-shortened campaign in 2018, he was non-tendered by Jacksonville, and he spent most of 2019 looking for a job before landing a spot on the Bucs’ taxi squad late in the year.
Then, in 2020, he became Tampa’s primary return man, handling 21 punts and 24 kick returns between the regular season and playoffs. But he was not especially dynamic, and fourth-round rookie Jaelon Darden is a legitimate threat to his roster spot.
so, what are the charges exactly?
Right sounds like some BS reporting if you ask me
If it’s because they’re unregistered they league shouldn’t suspended or fine him for that
The league will fine and/or suspend a player every time they do dumb things that embarrass the shield.
Does that include the Commish? He embarrasses them daily
By doing his job? He’s been tasked with trying to rid the league of thuggish behavior.
I don’t understand why these guys don’t take the time to get a carry permit. It’s not difficult to get one in Florida.
Mr Micken’s plays for Tampa, this does not mean that he lives there. According to the article he was arrested in Los Angeles CA. Even IF Jaydon had a Florida issues CCW, FL and CA do not have a reciprocity agreement.
They also found the guns in the car and not on his person, so a CCW does not really have anything to contribute to the issues. Given the fact that he was charged with 2 misdemeanors would lend to him getting a break. He probably has a permit and was not clear on his legal status.
I didn’t see he was in LA. In a state where you are legal (including California) with a carry permit you can legally transport a loaded handgun in your vehicle it does not have to be on your person.
Correct…. Totally agree…
However it does not say if he has a CCW, the issuing state, if it was his car, if he owned the weapons, or if the weapons are CA compliant. Its a poor article that leaves a lot for people to assume.
I followed the link in the article to TMZ Sports, which does include the information that he was arrested in Los Angeles, and the gun was in “his car” but not on his person. From there, I followed the link to the original TMZ Sports article on the arrest, and it noted that Mickens was originally charged with a felony, and that The Bucs statement on the arrest noted that Mickens had “reached out to let us know about the situation soon after it happened and we have been in contact with the league office to ensure they were aware.”
The only relevant football-related news that the above story left out – and with the link to TMZ, I wouldn’t expect it to include all of the legal details – was that Mickens participated in OTA’s and is expected to be in training camp, as well.
There should really be a separate part of the rumors site for NFL and NBA players who are getting arrested/gun charges/drug charges
Takes a morning of your time and minimal $$$ to get a CnC in MN……..And your CnC here works in about 25 other states.
To be honest this is bogus. The NFL nutures an environment with guns. Every owner is probably registered with 30+ guns (not all legal). If you don’t want players carrying guns then protect them from the countless amount of haters.
Brock Marion (when the cowboys did something) had a suburban with bulletproof glass and a gun. It’s not for some thug life BS. It was to protect his wife and kids. A lot of the players come from areas you would cry in. Places where you speed up at night. Also, we don’t know if they tried to get CCW prior.
I’m sorry but I’m with “most” players carrying. The NFL should have a mandate for getting them CCW and training courses etc etc.
Unfortunately this issue is not limited to just NFL Owners and Players. It’s every citizens Second Amendment.
It would be a nice change if more people exercised their Second Amendment and gave the First Amendment a break.
So, illegally having a gun and…having too much window tint…are punished the same…?
Those crimes are equally bad for society?
Guns suck. Gun owners suck more. Queue the banjo music and Hee Haw re-runs.
