Add another tributary to this stream of Monday Packers news. Aaron Rodgers is on the cusp of rejoining the team, and he may well want one of his former pass catchers back as well.
Rodgers wants Randall Cobb back in Green Bay, according to veteran broadcaster Trey Wingo and CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones (Twitter links). With the Packers willing to go to great lengths to appease the reigning MVP, the prospect of a Cobb return via trade certainly does not sound crazy.
The Texans have Cobb signed to a three-year, $27MM contract, but since-canned GM Bill O’Brien authorized that deal. And Houston acquired slot Anthony Miller from Chicago over the weekend, adding another new piece to the team’s skill-position corps. Cobb’s through-2022 contract includes a base salary of $8.25MM in 2021. Cobb will turn 31 next month, which does making him somewhat ill-fitting amid a Texans rebuild.
Green Bay, however, used a Day 2 draft pick on a wide receiver for the first time in six years in April, selecting Clemson’s Amari Rodgers in the third round. The Packers signed the 5-foot-9 target over the weekend. The ex-Trevor Lawrence weapon is expected to work in the slot as a pro, which would create an interesting overlap with Cobb’s skill set. The Packers also return Davante Adams complements Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Allen Lazard, with Devin Funchess attempting to return after having played one game over the past two seasons. Cobb also left Green Bay before Matt LaFleur installed his system, providing another hiccup here.
Cobb played eight seasons with the Packers, totaling 41 receiving touchdowns and more than 5,500 yards. After giving Cobb a $10MM-per-year extension in 2015, the Packers let him walk in 2019. Cobb signed with the Cowboys and outproduced the contingent the Packers hoped would fill the void, amassing 828 receiving yards in that season. While Valdes-Scantling and Lazard made bigger contributions in 2020 — a season in which an injury limited Cobb to 10 games — the Packers are clearly loading up for what may well be one last run with their franchise centerpiece. Given the news emerging Monday, it would certainly not shock to see the team part with a late-round pick to further satisfy their 17th-year quarterback.
Whackest demand ever.
It’s whacky to request the team to bring back a receiver who Rodgers is familiar with and trusts? Seems like a no brainer.
Rodgers and Cobb played 8 seasons together and Cobb is 30/31.
Whackest doesn’t necessarily mean nonsensical, just if we were all asked what would Aaron Rodgers big ask today be? The last thing we would’ve guessed was Randall Cobb because it’s the whackest demand ever lol draft a first round weapon Green Bay you slob losers
hackestway emandday vereay.*
Cool. Send the Texans a conditional 5th and 7th.
5th becomes a 4th if hes available for 14 or more games or posts 1,000 or more yards.
I’m not sure it would even cost that much. I imagine the Texans would love to shed Cobb’s salary. A straight up 5th rounder should do it.
also lmao at that contract BOB gave Cobb. BOB really was atrocious in almost every way as a GM.
I think that rct is right. Cobb should be pretty cheap, especially since he was signed in a different environment than the one he is currently playing in in Houston.
I doubt the Packers do this of course, but I don’t think that it cost much if they did.
I wouldn’t give more than a 6th round pick or just wait till they release him. Nobody’s going to pay that money that’s left on his contract.
with all these “damands” Rodgers has, he might as well run his own team.
He’s actively trying to get Jeopardy. What makes you think he’s also not actively trying to gain experience for a future front office role?
PLEEASE!
So the guy who is highly critical of Gutekunst’s decison making ability thinks Cobb will lead the Packers to a championship? Good grief!
Cmon guys GM Tom Brady did great in Tampa – don’t u get it – Rodgers not afforded the same title in GB.
Considering he does run the offense (ie, basically half of the on-field team), and has them in the playoffs almost every year, why not?
“3 First RD picks and 2 players” – The Houston Texans
Let the crybaby get nothing. What a JERK he has become. Don’t start on all of mind boggling stats either. He is a cancer in the clubhouse. He has exactly as many Super Bowl wins as Trent Dilfer.
I agreed with you on all your points until the Dilfer comparison. As much as I’ve disliked all this crap Rodgers has been pulling you can’t deny his talent.
He never said dilfer was better then Rodgers. He stated a fact that they both have the same amount of super bowls.
Career record of 126-63-1. lmao, a ‘cancer’. Especially when he’s said almost nothing publicly throughout this entire thing. As a Giants fan, give me some of that sweet cancer if it means we’ll go 11-5 every year.
I still don’t understand the whole “spite the whiner so we can make our team worse” perspective, but hey. It’s pretty much the entire reason that Rodgers is unhappy, because he wants the team to be more competitive now instead of possibly later, but that doesn’t make sense to some people.
I think Jordy Nelson is available.
Starting to sound like the patients are controlling the asylum in Green Bay
Believing the media is dangerous. Always.
Sure
He wants Cobb to come back, so they can both have a lights out year and get paid for the upcoming offseason, feel like he is looking out for a friend, not to mention maybe a chance to play together again in Gb and/or After GB. That’s what I take from it. Cobb would have a great season with Arod as opposed to Tyrod.
Maybe he should get Cobb a State Farm commercial
Cobb started only 2 games and had 440 yards for Houston last year. Sure doesn’t seem like a guy we need, especially for $8 mil. Nice to have your buddies around…but not on a limited payroll if they aren’t gonna earn their keep. Not to mention the WR they finally drafted for him plays the exact same position and most likely has far more potential. I guess Aaron is going to play GM this year
This is such an Aaron Rodgers move, the Packers finally draft him a young and talented WR, and Rodgers is like, “No thanks, I want my 30 year old former WR.”
Is anyone else starting to think, no wonder they didn’t inform him they were drafting Love? They probably just didn’t want to have that conversation, hearing him wine and complain…He always has something to complain about, or an excuse why he couldn’t get the job done..
The Packers have actually done a heck of alot to provide him with an atmosphere and team he can win with. At first, it was a lack of a running game, the OL, the coach, then the defense, now a lack of weapons…Eventually, when you’re the only common denominator, you have to take a look in the mirror..
But, of course, Rodgers will see it as he’s the only reason they’ve even came close, not like he’s a part of the problem why they can’t get another title..
He better either jump on board, or the boat is about to leave him, because LaFleur is one of the brightest offensive coaches in the league, he will have success with and eventually without him..That excuse has certainly dried up, along with alot of the other “reasons” the organization has helped fix as well…
LaFleur actually came in and helped Rodgers revitalize his career, he should be grateful, instead of being such an a.hat
“LaFleur actually came in and helped Rodgers revitalize his career, he should be grateful, instead of being such an a.hat”
I cannot imagine being dumb enough to actually believe this. Effing LaFleur revitalized Rodgers’ career. My God. I’ve seen plenty of whiny Rodgers hating, but this takes the cake. And to have it cap off a paragraphs-long ignorant screed is *chef’s kiss*.
Rodgers is what almost 40 and they fi ally get him a WR in the draft that looks promising. All you fans are like wow how ungrateful you want a former teammate that’s 30….
It’s cause Rodgers knows he got maybe 2 years left that he will be playing good enough to win a SB and we can’t rely on a rookie. Whereas he feels he can rely on Cobb who he’s played 8 seasons with. It just makes sense
How does he know he doesn’t have chemistry with the rookie? He skipped mini camp. Not a great argument considering the rookie and him could gel
He knows Cobb.
“Finally gets him a WR that looks promising” as Davonte Adams enters the chat….
So the original contract offered to Rodgers was highest paid and 5 years. This new deal settles for the year and then has a re-visit.
The baseline for the trade is Love to Houston for Cobb. — Baseline — This provides Houston with a logical Watson future development and seems to settle Mr. Rodgers.
It’s a baseline that opens up for a lot of management/players/agents to save face/look like they all have control-input/and best interests in mind.
Lol, Love for Cobb isn’t going to happen.
The packers aren’t trading a guy they just picked in the first round a year ago and they think is gonna be Rodgers successor for an injury prone old wide receiver.
Well he’s not old but he’s aging
Your definition of baseline needs a re-visit
Nope a baseline is a minimum or starting point used for comparisons, or what is it going to take to make both parties happy. You build upon that.
Kind of ironic how Love went from unable to read a defense and not very accurate to suddenly being the third consecutive HOF under center for the Pack. Kind of ironic that Anthony Miller landed in Houston two days ago, also kind of ironic how Deshaun Watson’s price has dropped.
Houston would need to cut Cobb and Packers sign him for about a million or 2. Packers don’t have cap space for his current contract.
They might with a Rodgers new deal, and an Adams new deal..But idk, you can never have enough weapons; however, Amari is going to be a really good one..Aaron would know if he’d be making an effort to build a relationship with him..
The numbers Cobb put up for Houston kinda suggest he’ll be a cap casualty anyway. Not out of the realm of possibilities that he would be available before the start of the season.
Keep us updated on the Green Bay Rodgers.
The Packers should counter the Cobb request by offering Aaron a free lobotomy treatment.
Easy send us Amiri Rodgers for Cobb and Texans most of the contract as the Packers need every cent possible.
Diva behavior
This week’s episode of Days of our Packers: Corny on the Cobb. Packers hero Aaron Rodgers convinces the Texans to trade him his buddy to Green Bay for a wedge of Colby cheese and one of the hairs from his mustache.
Well, in the last 24 hours the reason for all this Rogers behavior has become clear. As the packers have confirmed he wants a 2yr $90mm contract. Listen Aaron you can’t have it both ways, want a competitive team and be the highest paid player taking up almost 30% of the teams cap space. Now before the Aaron apologists start taking about the Mahomes contract, remember that team is based on a lot of underpaid players competing on their 1st contracts. When it’s time for the 2 contracts watch that team start to become average. Because I’m a flat cap sport eventually the cap catches up to you. The only team to have long term success was the Patriots, because Brady was willing to accept less in order to allow the team to pay others around him. A player like Aaron who doesn’t see that and only wants to make as much as possible before retiring (and more power to him for making as much as he can, but that comes at an overall team winning cost) will not have long term team success.
If I was Packers GM I would refuse to renegotiate, draw a line in the sand, if he holds out it’s $45,000 per day (and not like the old days where a team can forgive a fine, the league now collects it so it must be paid) let Love get 1st team reps and constantly put out press releases about how great Love is looking. With Aaron’s ego he’ll end that holdout ASAP and be back.
Listen, this is professional sports, eventually every player, no matter who is replaced and the team and sport moves on. The team will always win in the long run because fans ultimately root for the helmet not the players.
So in conclusion, Aaron either demand a trade or just go to work like the rest of us do and suck it up.
I’ve lost a lot of respect for Rodgers, his antics Effected both love and Amari, really screwing over other players on the pack. Stark contrast to someone like hoyer who always shows good character
So I guess Rodgers doesn’t care much for the current crop of Packer receivers, as he essentially just asked the front office to get rid of them.
honestly, not that big of an ask. he’s low-cost (trade wise) and would likely leapfrog most of the guys they have for reliable targets.
this is going to be a bizarre team to follow over the next few years, especially if jordan love breaks the trend of 30 years of hall of fame QB play
So Rogers first move running the team is to trade for Cobb? Next he will assign himself the OC and play calling duties.
I’m old enough to remember the era when QBs did call the plays and a few like Unitas were certainly better than many OCs now employed in the league.
