The big story of this NFL offseason has been the Aaron Rodgers drama in Green Bay. Depending on how things shake out, the Jordan Love Packers era could start in as early as a few months.
There have been reports that team brass didn’t think Love was particularly close to being ready to start last year, but the Utah State product sounds confident heading into 2021. “A hundred percent,” Love said when asked if he’ll be ready to start come Week 1, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.
“Obviously, this is a time where I’m getting a lot of extremely valuable reps that I might not have been getting in a normal circumstance. So I’m just going to take it day by day. … But yeah, that’s what I’m here for. I was drafted here to play quarterback, so I’ll definitely be ready Week 1.”
Love, of course, was referring to Rodgers’ holdout from the team’s mandatory minicamp. The 26th pick of last year’s draft also interestingly revealed that he’s stayed in touch with Rodgers this offseason. In fact, Demovsky reports that Love said he spoke with Rodgers shortly before arriving in Green Bay for OTAs.
A lot of Rodgers’ beef with the Packers reportedly stems from the process of selecting Love, which he wasn’t in the loop for, but he apparently hasn’t let that effect his relationship with his young potential successor.
Demovsky writes that Love has been hot and cold so far, struggling one day then having stretches of brilliance the next. Despite being in contact Love said he has no idea what Rodgers is going to do, and that he was “surprised” he elected to skip minicamp.
Despite getting drafted in 2020, Love won’t turn 23 until November. At this point, it seems like there’s a good chance he’s thrown into the fire before then.
Dude seriously this Rodgers news been on repeat all summer getting annoying.. This story is actually almost a week old.. Must not have any other NFL stories to write bout but to copy and paste stories from other sport news sites
It’s what the media does. It knows very little about the situation, including Rob Demovsky, yet prints this nonsense to get clocks and viewers. Reckless and asinine “journalism”. Useless drivel.
almost as bad as CNN reporting bout Trump durring the election lol
And before the election. And now we’re hearing a lot of what they were saying wasn’t true
Same goes for the comments.
Lather, rinse, repeat……..
The selection of Love wasn’t as much a problem as the non-selection of a receiver or another position to help now. Rodgers speaking to Love isn’t news exactly, because it doesn’t disprove or prove too much on either end. If Rodgers is being honest, then Love himself is not the issue. It’s trading the present window for a future possibility, one also where he won’t be there.
If the Packers had drafted Love then, say, drafted a stud receiver or middle linebacker (had one been available), Rodgers likely could have gotten on board with that. He obviously had an idea what he wanted from this draft (let’s be honest, all of us did too), and after being ignored, he held out. Love isn’t the object of Rodgers’ displeasure, it’s Gutekunst.
EXACTLY!
It’s June. As a Packer fan I’m tired of the saga, thankfully the Brewers (and Bucks) can get my focus until the season begins, at least.
My best guess is he wants to make them sweat, he can’t stand Murphy and many Packer fans think Murphy is a goof too. He’ll report during pre-season shortly before September. He knows or believes he doesn’t need the reps anyway.
When Favre did the will he wont he, he didn’t come of as an ahole. Rodgers just comes off like an ahole or DB and has for years.
Do you just not remember the Favre thing at all? The glaring difference that everyone seems to forget is that if Rodgers gets what he wants, Green Bay definitely gets better now. If Gutekunst gets what he wants, they might later. Possibly.
For 2021 they get better but then for 2022 they will have to cut or trade a bunch of players to get under next years cap and then Rodgers will whine about that. I’m against re doing his contract too. Giving him big guaranteed money at his age is a recipe for disaster because he could start slipping at any time. Trade him now while his trade value is high.
I would wager that they’re good in 2022 and beyond because rookie deals are four years. If Green Bay drafted Higgins or Claypool or another receiver that was available just that draft, they’d be better than they were. I don’t know if they would have won the Super Bowl, but they’d have had a better shot than drafting a bunch of players who didn’t and haven’t played. And I would rather get two or maybe guaranteed years of Rodgers than betting on the possibility of Love being as good. That last bit is my personal opinion if I were in that position, but the previous part is more factual than opinion.
And if someone like that does help win a Super Bowl, then the assumed cap hit would be worth it. Just ask the Bucs in a few years.
@phillyballers: Is this a joke? Favre came off as an enormous a-hole. He kept saying he was thinking about retiring, so they drafted Rodgers. Then he *literally retired*, Rodgers began prepping to be the starting QB, then he pulled the rug out from under Rodgers and un-retired.
I’m going to assume you weren’t even alive during that time because there’s no other way someone could come to the conclusion that Rodgers is being a bigger a-hole here. Rodgers has barely even said anything publicly. It’s all been rumor and speculation.
An apology and some BBC will make Aaron happy.
One thing I’ve noticed about phillyfans, everyone is an whole but them…..
A-hole!
If the dominoes fall a certain way I wouldn’t be surprised to see Blake Bortles starting in the season opener for Green Bay. He does have a 124.5 passer rating against the Saints.
Me neither. Bortles is right now their best quarterback, and he does have a good bit of starting experience. Plus, being the type of player he is, he’ll make the transition easier to whomever the next QB is. The drop off from Rodgers will be so severe that whomever takes over will be lambasted. Might as well let the guy who already is unliked take the ire of fans before the new guy takes over.
Love isn’t ready. Hot & cold isn’t what you want in practice. Especially with all his missed throws. Packers need to restructure Rodgers contract and get him back. One year and then cut/trade him.
No, you make amends and keep him until he retires on his own! I think that he is right about Gutekunt and he needs to go along with Murphy!
