Jamal Adams is holding out. The Seahawks safety will not participate this week’s mandatory minicamp (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter).
The Seahawks acquired Adams and a fourth-rounder from the Jets last year for a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 third-round pick, a 2022 first-rounder, and safety Bradley McDougald. Adams, of course, was embroiled in a longstanding contract dispute with the Jets. But, upon arrival in Seattle, he agreed to play on his existing deal, which meant a salary of just $3.59MM last year. Right now, he’s on course to make $9.86MM for 2021, thanks to his fifth-year option.
Broncos star Justin Simmons stands as the league’s highest-paid safety at $15.25MM per year. Meanwhile, Landon Collins leads the position in full guarantees at $44.5MM. Adams is definitely looking to top Simmons’ AAV, and his camp may also be pushing for a new watermark in guarantees.
Adams suffered a torn labrum and a groin injury last year, but he still showed his mettle as a dangerous playmaker. In 2020, Adams’ 9.5 sacks set a new single-season record for defensive backs — he did it in just 12 games. For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus’ advanced metrics had him as a middle-of-the-pack cover man and run defender.
By skipping minicamp, Adams will be subject to fines of ~$93K per day. That’s alright by the All-Pro safety, who is hoping to send a serious message to Seattle.
What a scrub! Players like him are what is wrong with the nfl! Don’t sign a contract you don’t intend to fulfill.
except teams that sign a guy to a 4 or 5 year deal and trade them the next year. only blame players never teams
They traded him because of a contract dispute witch then led to Adams requesting a trade himself.
So is it okay for the jets to ask Crowder to take a pay cut or be cut?
Teams have all the leverage.
He has played the first 4 years of his contract and played pretty damn well, he wants to get paid as insurance as we know how quick a player can get injured
Money discussion aside… those sunglasses are fire!
Dude has 2 career INTs in 4 years. Yeah he gets some sacks but is that really worth top dollar for safeties…
Never understood that price SEA paid in the trade either.
Yes. He is absolutely worth top dollar, and the Hawks will eventually sign him. Dude changes games.
I disagree, good in the box but a major liability in coverage. Which in my opinion is a critical issue considering he’s a safety.
Crazy to think he has only played in the nfl for 4 years. Seems like he has been in the league a lot longer than that
This report is incorrect! As per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times – my hometown newspaper – Adams is excused for personal reasons:
“ When the Seahawks hit the field for mandatory minicamp Tuesday afternoon, safety Jamal Adams will not be there, a source confirmed to The Seattle Times.
But a source said the absence is for personal reasons and will be considered as excused by the team and not considered a holdout.”
Would that mean Zach posted an article in error? I don’t believe you
Not so much an error I would say, but based on information he may have had at the time, but which turned out to be inaccurate. The very next posting on the site provided clarity regarding it being an excused absence.
Jets committed a robbery. Seahawks traded for a glorified LB than the Rams did for Ramsey, a true lockdown DB.
Given the Hawks poor history in drafting first rounders and Jamal getting 9.5 sacks last season (he even missed a few games!), call it what you will…I’ll take it!!! As a Seahawks fan…
Idk, seeing how the Jets pooped the bed with this draft, I’m not sure who can be crowned the winner.
Drafting Vera Tucker a top OL with the pick is “pooped the bed”?
Over Drafting Mormon Drew Lock as your QBOTF and then trading two thirds to move up in the first to draft a guard is pooping the bed. Certain Bust QB and overpaying for a guard is terrible drafting.
