Giants cornerback Sam Beal pleaded guilty to a pair of gun charges, as NJ.com’s Zack Rosenblatt writes. The charges stemmed from a June 2020 arrest in Ohio. Now, he’ll be on probation through June of next year.
Beal was arrested roughly one year ago today after cops pulled him over and found him with a concealed weapon. One charge is for illegal carrying; the other is for improper handling of the gun. He was also cited for marijuana possession and a traffic violation.
The Giants took a chance on Beal by taking him in the third-round of the supplemental draft in 2018. However, he was forced to redshirt his rookie year after shoulder surgery. There was some talk that Beal could start in 2019, but a hamstring issue cost him most of training camp and the entire preseason and the club was forced to place him on injured reserve in September. Then, he opted out of the 2020 season.
Beal’s odds of making the Giants’ cut this year weren’t looking too great, especially since he joined the club before the arrival of head coach Joe Judge. The legal issues won’t help matters.
If the Giants cut ties, it’ll go down as one of Dave Gettleman‘s biggest misses in recent years. By using a 2018 third-round supplemental pick on Beal, the Giants coughed up their 2019 third-rounder in the regular draft. All in all, Beal has played just six times across three seasons.
This guy is just a walking train-wreck. Does he really want to play football or just go through the motions (barely) to collect his rookie contract and go on to something else? Yet another wasted draft pick.
“Beal was arrested roughly one year ago today after cops pulled him over and found him with a concealed weapon.”
Roughy 1 year ago today? That’s oddly specific for a rough time frame.
He was arrested on June 2, 2020, so it’s roughly one year ago.
That would be “a little more than a year ago”
Or, roughly one year ago.
no.. roughly
I was interested in this comment rough 2 minutes ago.
I mean… the guy’s a convicted criminal working for someone named Judge. The omens are not good…
Use the “Plaxico Burress Defense Strategy”
What a bust. You get a chance at making life-changing money and you blow it.
Total loser doing the bare minimum to collect his checks
Beal had questions regarding his off field decision making and coachability that made him go undrafted. Hopefully he wakes up and matures and uses his chance to play football as a means of improving his priorities, because he won’t have a chance to make this kind of living outside of the league if he gets cut.
Doubtful
I would agree, it is doubtful. But all the same, the best we can do is hope for it, just for him as a person, because he controls that aspect of his life and I don’t wish ill on anyone.
And by drafted I mean in the actual draft. There is a reason he went in the supplemental draft, not the standard one.
Nice save, or at least attempt but a supplemental draft pick costs teams an “actual” draft pick. You made that comment to imply he had character issues that dropped him to no draft value and that wasn’t true. He was a borderline 1st round talent that was some thought was one of the most talented guys to ever go in the supplemental draft; he ended up costing the Giants an “actual” 3rd round pick.
But he was drafted, 3rd round of the supplemental draft, which is rather high.
Why do these athletes need guns? Why do they want to present as thugs!!?? Not exactly the best way to succeed in the real world. You know, that world he will be joining soon if he doesn’t get his act together!!??
To paraphrase the famous quote by Al Capone: “You can get further in life with a gun and a kind word, than just a kind word”.
There is no defending it, but sometimes these guys need protection from those still stuck where they grew up. Some guys don’t want to see others get ahead in life, especially if you’re flaunting your success all over town. But that’s some other rough inner cities not Grand Rapids, MI.
Because their culture glorifies that behavior.
So you are are thug if you own a gun and 2nd Amendment is something we do not need? Any other rights you would like to take away?
Cut him Big Blue and move on……hasn’t shown any reason for making the team….sat out 2019 and then incredibly opted out of 2020 when he needed to show why he was drafted so high in the first place……unfortunately, another Gettleman miss!
Just look at him.. That’s all you need to know
