The Eagles are back down to two quarterbacks on their offseason roster. They waived rookie UDFA Jamie Newman on Wednesday. They also waived wide receivers Khalil Tate and Trevon Grimes, cutting the latter with an injury designation.
Newman agreed to terms with the Eagles minutes after the draft concluded, but the team appears to have determined the former Wake Forest quarterback is not ready to compete for a roster spot. This transaction leaves Jalen Hurts and Joe Flacco as Philly’s QBs. It would seemingly put the Eagles on the hunt for another developmental/third-string passer.
A 6-foot-4 passer, Newman transferred from Wake Forest to Georgia but did not end up playing for the Bulldogs after opting out of last season. He worked as the Demon Deacons’ starter in 2019, throwing 26 touchdown passes and averaging 7.9 yards per attempt. Newman participated in the Senior Bowl, being one of the 2021 showcase’s two QBs — along with Falcons UDFA Feleipe Franks — to go undrafted. Scouts Inc. graded Newman 184th among this year’s prospects. Despite the sixth-round grade, Newman is on the waiver wire.
After changing coaching staffs, the Eagles switched up their QB depth chart. Carson Wentz and Nate Sudfeld, teammates for the past four seasons, are elsewhere now. Hurts, viewed as a developmental player coming out of Oklahoma in 2020, is on track to start this season. On his fourth team in four years, Flacco is in position to back him up. Ahead of training camp, the Eagles will likely add a third player to this equation.
I was very high on Jamie Newman coming out of Wake Forest (as was a lot of people). When he decided to transfer to Georgia I thought that someone who had his best interest in mind had his ear and he was making the correct decisions.
I heard from an alum that Jamie had no interest in competing for the starting job at Georgia. Two weeks later he opted out for COVID reasons to train for the draft.
Don’t see any team taking on an athletic talent that does not want to compete.
With a good season at UGA, there were people talking about Newman potentially being a first-round QB.
Not playing last season TRULY just plummeted this kid’s stock, but I still thought someone would at least take a chance on him in the 6th Round or so..
Apparently, he has some other issues that are turning teams away from him. Especially for Philly to release him so early on, without any other QBs, that would give me alot of pause about signing Newman…
I wish we could know the reason he was released so early on after just being signed…
Should go back up Russell Wilson. He needs a leader who he respects to bring the best out in him
This guy looked like Jameis Winston 2.0 at the Senior Bowl

Looks like the Eagles will be dumpster diving for a third QB
If you get down to a 3rd QB your seasons is already trashed. Anybody expecting this squad to compete for the division is expecting a bit much. Also, a 3rd string QB won’t be hard to find once cut downs begin, the problem is they need one prior to camp to take camp reps.
This kid is unmotivated and has the maturity of 15 year old.
You may be right, odd to see a guy get dumped so quickly especially when they need a QB3 badly. He must’ve really made a negative impression on the organization either personally or just couldn’t grasp the game part.
I don’t recall ever seeing a prospect torpedo his own draft stock (or college reputation altogether) quite as quickly as Jamie Newman. This may be untrue, but a lot of people were convinced that being subjected to a competition to become Georgia’s starter convinced Newman that his stock was good enough as is and opt out to wait for the draft because he thought that he should start by default. That may not be true at all, and I don’t know Newman to say whether it is or is not.
I can say however that he has not done much to change that narrative and certainly underestimated how quickly a year can pass and change perceptions in football. He led Wake Forest admirably and we all expected great things in Georgia, but none of that happened, and proving himself capable at the highest levels of college football could have vaulted Newman ahead in draft considerations after excelling at a relatively lower level program at Wake Forest. I hope he gets a chance to prove the aforementioned perception wrong, but no one (okay, almost no one) gets a free shot in the NFL.
Whoever told him to opt out of last season gave him really bad career advice.
