The Texans QB room is starting to get a bit crowded. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports (via Twitter) that the Texans are signing Jeff Driskel to a one-year deal worth $2.5MM.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets that the deal includes a $250K signing bonus and a $1MM base salary ($500K guaranteed). Driskel will also earn $30K for each game he’s active, and he has up to $750K in playing-time incentives.
The 2016 sixth-round pick didn’t even make it to the regular season with the 49ers, but he subsequently found a home in Cincinnati. He spent three-plus seasons with the Bengals organization, including a 2018 campaign where he threw six touchdowns vs. only two interceptions in nine games (five starts). He started three games filling in for Matthew Stafford in Detroit during the 2019 season, and he started one of his three games for Denver in 2020.
In total, the 28-year-old has seen time in 15 career games (nine starts), completing 58.6-percent of his passes for 2,120 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
While Driskel got a chunk of change from Houston, it’s not a foregone conclusion that he’ll even make the Texans roster. Following Deshaun Watson‘s trade request and subsequent legal issues, the organization has been busy adding to their uncertain depth chart. Free agent addition Tyrod Taylor is expected to start (assuming Watson is sidelined), and 2021 third-round pick Davis Mills will surely make the roster. This means Driskel will likely be competing with free agent addition (and former teammate) Ryan Finley for a spot on the roster.
You add all 4 of those QBs together and you’re still about 99% short of the one that’s not playing anytime soon that used to be your franchise QB.
Minus the sexual assaults and they’re even
At this point the plan is
*sign guys to cheap deals
*trade them to contenders for picks
*shoot for high draft position
Taylor’s been unlucky with injuries past few stops. No sense is throwing mills out there and giving him the David Carr treatment.
If this doesn’t signal the end of Deshaun in Houston, nothing does.
It’s a sad day in the NFL when the signing of Jeff Driskel is a signal for any QBs end tbh.
I figured 25 sexual assault lawsuits in today’s society would trigger the end but sure a journeyman QB could also be the signal.
yes, a depth signing. of course that’s what this means.
What does it mean
BBC
Steal of the draft! Right dare!
And not Kaep!? #smh Just kidding
When all is said and done, it’ll be…
QB1 Taylor
QB2 Driskel
QB3 Mills
The others will be traded or, in Finley’s case, cut.
yeah, Finley is classic offseason depth here.
Dang, can’t believe packers didn’t sign this guy. Missed out I guess.
How many fans will go to games this upcoming season.
Will this draw the season ticket holders out. I know Watson is most likely done in Houston. Myself am sad at that but I am sure that he and the fans were not expecting this kind of off season and craziness when Bill was fired and all this craziness from McNair. I wonder what his father would have done if had been around and healthy. Maybe all this is just for this season ahead with circumstances. I hope Watson does end up somewhere. I just do not see him throwing his career away like this.
With everything surrounding Watson at the moment what’s the most likely outcome and what’s the most likely trade package looking like?
Would the Texans accept just a single first round pick for next year for him right now? Would a team even give that up with his court issues?
If he is all cleared will teams be hesitant, are Texans going to want a haul or will Watson be happy to play a year to prove doubters wrong?
For example if the Giants were to give up a first round pick 2022 and say a conditional second round pick for 2023 pending the result for Watson would that be enough. If Watsons cleared it’s a steal, if Watson isn’t then it’s potentially a wasted first depending on the sentence.
Would be a great fit for Watson I think. Play in NY, a pretty young and talented team, a top RB in Barkley, just signed Galloday to go with Toney, Shepard, Slayton etc at TE you have Engram and Rudolph. A semi decent o line, and a defence with a good mix of talent. Playing in arguably the easiest division of football, they went 6-10 last year they would be an easy 10 win team with Watson
Why would anyone give up a first for Watson? That’s insane. Any team that trades for him is gonna get bashed by the media and be negatively affected by it. He is not going to be cleared because he’s already acknowledged that there is “some” truth to the allegations it’s just a matter of degree.
This is the Texans issue and they are stuck with him and his contract until this is sorted out. I honestly doubt the could get a 7th round pick for him at this point. He still has to be disciplined by the league if they choose to do so as well.
So Simmons, you’re proposed trade is insane
