The Seahawks will decline Rashaad Penny‘s fifth-year option (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). This was the expected move as the running back was limited to just three games in 2020.
Penny, the No. 27 overall pick in 2018, finished last year with just eleven carries for 34 yards. He spent much of the year on IR and, in the two previous years, he didn’t do much to justify his draft status. Exercising Penny’s option would have meant a $4.523MM salary in 2022. Furthermore, that sum would have been fully guaranteed, per the league’s new rules for the fifth-year option for first-round picks.
While on the field, Penny has at least looked the part of a decent backup. In his first two seasons, Penny took 150 carries for 789 yards (5.3 yards per attempt) and five touchdowns. He also added 17 receptions for 158 yards and one score. Now, he’ll look to reassert himself alongside Chris Carson, Travis Homer, and DeeJay Dallas.
Penny started flashing his ability before the knee injury in his second season. With last year being a lost year, it sealed his fate on the option. I think he could really break out this year but it depends on him being healthy. I do think the Waldron offense will help him.
Just another example of the Seahawks terrible drafting and why you don’t take a RB round 1.
have you ever heard of people named russell wilson, richard sherman, kam chancellor? as for the rbbin first round saquon barkley
The fact you have to name players drafted from 2010-12 proves my point. Saquon isn’t even the example you give. Run CMC is the only one who’s really panned out.
Chris carson dk metcalf ty lickety. no I didn’t lookem up
That’s it? The amount of rose colored glasses some people use when looking at the Seahawks is insane. A major reason they never got the 2nd ring is the awful drafting. Yeah they make the playoffs every year, but they aren’t serious contenders. Zero conference title games since 2014. Players like DK and Carson are easy to stop in big games too. All DK does is go deep every play. Ramsey locked him up so bad and that was just the wild card round.
Meh, I think you’re right about them drafting bad, but DK running deep every route was more of result of Schottys play calling than Dk’s ability.
I have to think this is their worst first round pick considering needs and what the pick they traded down from was used on. They’ve had other first round buses like James Carpenter but at least that was an o-lineman which was not already a position of strength. And like the previous commenter, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him thrive in this offense in 2021 but it won’t be enough to justify the pick.
I don’t think that’s remotely close to accurate. I love how hindsight is used to make arguments.
I don’t really see any problem with the original comment and I’m not even a Seahawks fan. Even at the time, it was a questionable pick.
The experts thought they should have taken Sony Michel. I’d rather have Penny right now. I’m hindsight, Chubb was a better choice, but he was rated behind Barkley/Michel and on par with Penny.
Bottom line is Hawks needed a RB and were picking late first round. As I said, hindsight.
In the 2018 draft RB was a serious position of need also. You must not remember Lacey wasn’t the answer. Carson had only 200 some yards. By trading down they did miss some players but did gain more picks and thought solved RB position. And there was better answers on the board left afyerwars but Penny from college career looked like a superstar.
The value has not been realized & if he has a mediocre season or gets injured, expect him to be a free agent next off season. I hope he plays very well and contributes to the point whereby he gets an extension offer. That would mean he is passed the injury bug.
