The Patriots are re-signing a familiar face. New England is signing veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer to a one-year deal, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). Jim McBride of the Boston Globe was first with the news (on Twitter).
Hoyer has had three stints with the Patriots throughout his 12-year career, earning a Super Bowl ring as Tom Brady‘s backup in 2018. Following a one-year stint with the Colts in 2019, Hoyer re-joined the Patriots last offseason following Brady’s defection to Tampa Bay. Hoyer ended up starting a single game for New England, completing 15 of his 24 pass attempts for 130 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, and a fumble. The veteran didn’t end up seeing the field again following that Week 4 loss to the Chiefs.
This offseason, Hoyer was briefly mentioned as a potential option for the Jets as a backup, but he’ll instead be heading back to New England. The team’s depth chart looks a bit different in 2021. The team used the 15th-overall pick on Mac Jones, and the rookie is expected to compete with 2020 starter Cam Newton for the starting gig. As Ben Volin of the Boston Globe tweets, Newton could serve as Jones’ competition while Hoyer could serve an important role as Jones’ mentor.
This signing is probably bad news for Jarrett Stidham. Following Brady’s decision to join Tampa Bay last offseason, there were some whispers that the 2019 fourth-round pick could end up inheriting the starting job. Instead, Stidham started a whopping zero games, although he did complete 50-percent of his passes for 256 yards, two scores, and three interceptions in limited snaps.
….and instantly becomes the best QB on the roster.
I’m starting to worry BB is not happy about his QB choices granted I highly doubt him or Stidham make the 53 man roster
Mac’s Film buddy.
Jesus, no.
Smart move by a smart team. This kid can ball and with an opportunity will make that clear. I had the luck to play some collage ball with him, and trust me he has that “it” factor. I’ll never forget watching him sling the ball around back in collage. Good job Pats!
Not sure if serious. He’s 35 years old and has already proven what he is.
Brian is a real talent that just hasn’t been given the opportunity. I think it’s very realistic to say he can vye for a pro bowl selection when presented with the opportunity
When he got spun around by the Chiefs and called for a timeout that the Patriots didn’t have, losing the opportunity to score… I thought that was going to be his last day in New England.
He has started 39 games he had his chances and failed he’s 16 for 23 he’s nothing more then a clipboard holder now he my just be here to work as a coach/player for Jones
Can’t tell if serious or just trolling.
Agreed. The “it” factor is “Cousin It”,meaning he’s not going to do or say much.
There’s nothing smart about what Bill has done since he told Tom to take a hike.
Luke Nowak:
Sad reflection on our educational system and the preferential treatment afforded both financially and academically to “student athletes”. Sad that you attended college and, hopefully for you, graduated, yet are unable to correctly spell the word COLLEGE !! You did have two chances to correctly spell it and muffed them both !
Nentwigs,
But who doesn’t enjoy making collages?!
I agree, it’s a “ Sad Reflection on are educational system” that I made a spelling error in a online comment section. Clearly my schooling had failed me. No one who makes spelling errors should ever be allowed to attend COLLAGE. Regardless of there expertise in other areas. For some weird reasons my lack of spelling knowledge hasn’t came back to bite me in my current job as a scout for Oregon state university.
I went to a game the glorious year he was a Colt vs Miami, who was 0 for the season at that point in November. Boyer sucked so bad I thought it was Curtis Painter. He threw 3 picks including a pick six; fumbled a couple more times & generally looked lost. I’m not a Jacoby Brissett fan at all, but I was thrilled that he was back the following week. Only NE will employ him & I’m not sure why
Sorry, Hoyer (spellcheck sucks as bad as Hoyer).
In Elementary and Junior High School I had a friend named Brian. He worked in the lunchroom during recess and one day fell in the mud.
Brady definitely won the divorce lol. Bill is football senile at this point.
An extra coach for Mac Jones. You don’t expect Cam Newton to guide him.
I’m not sure I’d even want Cam giving teammates wardrobe advice.
Apparently he needs money and doesn’t mind going 7/10.
And you think they are losing 10 games? What are you smoking? Sounds like you’re hoping, sorry the is NE’s division still!
I was actually expecting the Jets to sign Hoyer. He has been in several different systems and is probably more of an asset as a mentor than as a player now.
Releasing (can’t see a trade) Stidham is the next move. They go into the season with Cam as their QB, Jones as the backup and Hoyer as the mentor for Jones.
Not that hard to figure out and makes plenty of sense. This is a solid move by BB
Yes, Bill; solid move. Teach Jones what not to do; great reverse psychology.
