Shortly after reuniting Blake Bortles and OC Nathaniel Hackett, the Packers are adding another quarterback to their roster. Their Kurt Benkert workout led to agreement (Twitter link).
The Packers worked out Benkert and Chad Kelly at their rookie minicamp; it appears they will choose Benkert to be their fourth QB. This will mark Benkert’s second NFL team. He spent the past three seasons with the Falcons.

A 2018 UDFA, Benkert played two seasons at East Carolina and Virginia. He started two seasons for the Cavaliers, throwing 46 touchdown passes between his junior and senior seasons. The Falcons used him as roster depth behind Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub but moved in a different direction this offseason. The Falcons waived Benkert in February.
With Aaron Rodgers wanting out, Jordan Love stood alone at this position coming into the week. The Packers now have some depth ahead of the on-field portion of their OTA workouts and minicamp. Should the Rodgers stalemate drag into the late summer, the team has a potential third-string option in Benkert.
Who screwed up their QB position more; Texans or GB? I know Watson has charges looming, but prior to that, the Texans went out of their way to listen, then openly ignore their Qb whom they asked his opinion on. GB had a HoF QB still playing elite and choose to trade up for a QB that became the 3rd stringer?????
TEX because no team could ever please Rodgers
Well, to be fair, some team COULD please Rodgers. All it would take is to make him the highest paid QB, guarantee all his money, allow him to start as long as he sees fit, be the GM, head coach, and scouting director. Might need to make him team president, too, but that one is probably negotiable. Oh yeah, he’ll also need to be constantly showered with adoration from all those around him and told that he’s the best at everything he does.
I think under that scenario, and possibly that scenario only, Rodgers would be happy. At least for a little while. Might want to keep a pallet of Kleenex in stock though, just in case.
Might just try drafting an offensive player in the first round and not draft his successor while he’s an MVP talent trying to win a super bowl. Could probably start there
Poor baby doesn’t like competition. Maybe he should go host Jeopardy.
2nd all time in MVPs… but yeah, more competition is what he needs(not weapons).
the past 5 years: 6 DB’s drafted in the first 2 rounds. 0 wr’s. 1 RB. 0 TE. and his replacement.
You guys are disgusting fans. I mean really. Where would your team have been had it not been for him? I’d want out if this was the fan base I had to deal with. You are taking rumors and running wild. Just plain ignorant
Lol you could say this about any fan. Your also only seeing a few people posting. You my friend are the ignorant one.
Tjeck109 –
This fan base loved him like no other until he started to act like a childish brat like no other ever has. You are clueless.
Who cares where a player was drafted? The OL is arguably the best in the NFL, Adams might be the best WR in the game, Jones is easily a top 10 RB, if not top 5. Dillon has a ton of potential. And Tonyan is pretty good.
And after drafting all those defensive players their defense still sucks.
SuperSinker –
Yeah, like that’s reason to behave like this. And funny how he went through the rest of that offseason and played the entire year last year, but all of a sudden its such a problem now…a full year after the fact.
Give me a freakin break. They have great RB’s, one of the very best OL’s in the game, the best WR in football, and a top TE. In case you didnt notice, they also had one of the top offenses in the entire NFL last year. All this after “not drafting an offensive player in the first round”. Cry me a freakin river.
amen KCJ, rodgers has always had a chip on his shoulder, you’ve outlined it!
I’m a packers fan and Arod is not the team, he’s the QB. Who cares if he leaves? I support the team, not the QB.
GB didn’t screw their QB situation. Rodgers did that to himself ever since he went all Hollywood with shacking up with an actress and wanting to be on jeopardy.
The end result is that he became a drama queen.
Texas for not hiring a PI to find out what their star player was doing.
They could have gotten a haul of picks if they traded him at the end of the season.
Does every roster move have to revolve around Rodgers here?
It’s amazing how ugly people get toward a HOF QB when the only info they have are rumors. It’s no wonder Favre didn’t want anything to do with GB when he left. Ungrateful group of fans.
Favre was too busy scamming the welfare system.
TJECK109 –
Yet another clueless comment. You obviously don’t recall how revered Favre was around WI and around the whole country until he started acting like a prima donna and threatened to retire every single year for 3 or 4 years in a row. Finally, Rodgers was ready to to go, and when Brett changed his retirement plans ONCE AGAIN, this time the Packers had enough. The fans too. Then Favre turned on the drama and was traded. This is why that’s the first thing that comes to a person’s mind when they hear the name “Brett Favre”. No one thinks of all the wins. No one thinks of all the yards, the touchdowns, the comebacks, or any of that. The first thing they think about 15+ years later is STILL the retirement crap. And this isn’t just Green Bay fans, it’s all across the country. So get a damn clue dude and quit bashing Packer fans when you’re obviously ignorant and misinformed. No fan base loves their players like ours…until they start acting like complete arrogant, crybaby fools and try to hold the team we love so dearly hostage. That’s where the line is drawn.
The fan base was nonexistent in the 70s and 80s when they stunk. Sure that dump of a stadium was full, but what the hell else you going to do in that cow town on a Sunday. The fans didn’t crawl out from under the rock they were under until Favre started winning. Once Rodgers is gone after 25+ years of Hall of Fame QB play and only 2 Super Bowls. We’ll see how great that fan base is. It’s about to look a lot like Cleveland or Cincinnati up there real soon.
You are really, really angry about this KCJ, and it’s kind of proving TJECK’s point.
I think he’s just angry about the ignorant posts. Not really proving anything.
Well, if your favorite franchise was handled by incompetent managers, would you be able to tell?
To me as an outsider, it seems pretty certain that Gutekunst and Co. are doing every little thing wrong that they can to set the Packers back in order to achieve their vision. The latter part seems a lot more important to them than sucking it up and trying to win with their generational QB. I really don’t understand how anyone rooting for that franchise can get so angry with Rodgers for wanting to win. Yes, Rodgers is being a baby and unlikeable. But he’s right. If he gets what he wants, the team gets better. No doubt. If Gutekunst gets what he wants, we don’t really know-but it’s pretty likely that the team gets worse.
Why side with Gutekunst? Or, more importantly, why be so mad at Rodgers? That’s not ignorance, to me, it’s demanding competence. I personally, just as a fan of football, hate seeing such obviously bad decision-making (especially for the satisfaction of either ego or some arbitrary abstract team building philosophy) from a team.
Also…has Rodgers said anything himself?
That’s a beautiful mystery
He hasn’t denied a single thing either.
Benkert loves BBC
I love seeing the Packer fans having their undies in a bunch. Won’t win 7 games this year without Rodgers. And once he’s gone the NFL won’t be having the refs win 2-3 games a year for them.
We don’t..guys like you lap this nonsense up..
The Kurt Benkert era has officially begun
As much depth as my kitchen sink…
Bye bye Rodgers
Packers GM doesn’t care about Rodgers feelings.
I heard he’s going to have 5 QB’s on the active roster, as a middle finger to Aaron.
I’m wondering if the Packers are signing these nobody QBs just to point out to fans what the course of events could have been if they hadn’t drafted Love.
Well, at this point, Bortles is a much more viable option than Love as a starter.
