Two quarterbacks will be reporting to Green Bay this weekend, and neither are named Aaron Rodgers. The Packers will host Chad Kelly and Kurt Benkert at their rookie minicamp this weekend for tryouts, sources told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network (Twitter link). They’ll be the only two signal-callers brought in for now, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com tweets.
The Packers currently only have two passers on the roster, Rodgers and Jordan Love. Rodgers likely isn’t showing up any time soon, meaning they really only currently have one guy willing to throw the ball for them. As such, they’ll be signing at least a quarterback or two soon, as GM Brian Gutekunst recently acknowledged. Kelly and Benkert will get the first cracks at being those guys.
Kelly is well known to many football fans for being the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, and for his rollercoaster college career that had plenty of ups and downs (including some off-field issues). The Broncos drafted Kelly with the final pick of the 2017 draft, and he was released midway through the 2018 season after getting arrested for trespassing.
After serving a two-game suspension for that he was with the Colts the past two seasons, mostly on the practice squad. Benkert is a 2018 UDFA from Virginia, who has spent the past three seasons with the Falcons. He’s mostly been on Atlanta’s practice squad, and was waived back in February.
Like I said no Rodgers…. Welcome back 1970’s and 80’s….
Rodgers will be on Jeopardy, Kelley will be on America’s Most Wanted and the Packers will be looking up at the Lions.
In my dreams
Ya done messed up, A-A-Ron
The last time a QB was brought in from a school in Mississippi, he went on to win a SB, multiple MVPs, and walked into the HOF. Just saying.
Is he still going by $wag? I’m shocked Rogers and Love are the only two on the roster. After what the Broncos went through last year, you’d think every team would carry some depth. Didn’t they sign any UDFA QBs?
Did Gutekunst approve this with Rodgers?
Wow now they have 2 QB cancer, nut jobs on the same team.
We never got the true story of what happened to Kelly in Denver. He went to a party at Von Miller’s house and then somehow ended up being so out of it he broke into a random dude’s house. He didn’t show enough talent up to that point to really care if he washed out, but it sure is odd how the media didn’t seem interested in what went on that night (especially given Miller’s possible involvement).
It got reported. He got really high/drunk and got into a fight (can’t remember if it turned physical or not) with someone’s guest at the party. Then, after being kicked out, he wandered into someone’s house, and started mumbling incoherently to the wife of the owner. He didn’t do anything violent or anything apparently, but the homeowners chased him away with a vacuum cleaner tube if I recall. Kelly can throw a laser beam, lightning fast with good accuracy, but he did have behavioral concerns in college, so he was questionable in that area.
Seriously!!?? These two are Gutekunst’s first solution in case Rodgers isn’t taking snaps in GB in 2021? BG continues to think he’s the smartest guy in the room and refuses to admit he was wrong or made a mistake(s).
For all of you Gutekunst supporters and negative towards Rodgers outsiders. This is a good example of why many football fans want Gutekunst to be shown the door out as GM.
