Tim Tebow has a new job and the hottest selling jersey in the NFL. What he doesn’t have, however, is guaranteed money in his new deal with the Jaguars (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Field Yates).
Tebow’s one-year deal with Jacksonville is for $920K, the league’s minimum salary for a player with his experience level. And, if he doesn’t make the final cut in the fall, he’ll see $0 of that sum, because it’s completely non-guaranteed. That’s not necessarily a surprise – Tebow has bounced around from the broadcast booth to minor league baseball in recent years. Outside of pal Urban Meyer, it doesn’t sound like there were many coaches interested in signing him this year.
The one-time U of F star hasn’t played in a real NFL game since the 2012 season. His last stint was with the Eagles during the 2015 preseason. Despite his first-round pedigree, Tebow wasn’t up to snuff as an NFL quarterback. This time around, he’ll be trying his hand at tight end, practicing alongside Chris Manhertz, fifth-round rookie Luke Farrell, Tyler Davis, James O’Shaughnessy, and Ben Ellefson,
For what it’s worth, Meyer is pretty excited about what Tebow could bring to the table.
“[My assistants] said, ‘Wow, this guy’s ball skills, he’s a great athlete, he looks like he’s 18 years old, not 20-whatever-he-is, 33,’” Meyer told Cris Collinsworth (via The Ringer). “Guys, you don’t understand. Now this guy is, he’s the most competitive maniac you’re ever gonna talk to, and let’s give it a shot.”
I can already see the ‘Philly Special’ (throws a duck) coming…
I miss the Denver days when he would complete zero passes until the final drive and somehow win the game.
Steelers fan here. Do not miss those days. Nor does Ike Taylor.
I wouldnt say he wasn’t up to snuff at qb. He has a winning record and a playoff win so clearly he was doing something right to help the Broncos win. If Elway hadn’t signed Peyton Manning, who knows how Tebow’s career couldve ended up. Tebow helped pave the road for guys like Lamar Jackson
His career would have been a bigger joke. The guy gets lucky on a deep pass against the Steelers “who blew the coverage by the way” and people are what could have been. What would have been was what happened the following game against the Pats… Remember that game lol that’s what his career would have looked like!!!
So you use a 1 game example to say his career would have been a joke? Peyton also looked terrible against the Pats defense at times so his career was a joke too right? Also not sure how his career is a joke? He never got a fair shot at any of his career stops except with the Mets.
… except with the Mets …
Where he couldn’t play big league ball, either.
Yeah and? At least he got a chance to play baseball and its not like he made a fool out of himself.
.163 and almost 50%k rate is pretty much making a fool out of yourself
Brownsbacker, Tebow was better at baseball than you are at anything in your life. Don’t forget that.
“Never got a fair shot” Dude was terrible in the NFL. Period. No “what if” stuff. Also to your “if Elway didn’t replace him with Peyton” you should be asking the why. Why did he? Because they had a great defense and were going to waste it by playing a guy who completed like 2 passes a game. Also replaced him with a hall of fame QB one of the greats to ever play. Then they went to 2 Super Bowls and won 1. If Tebow was so good teams would have been lining up to sign him to play QB. But the boost in jersey sales wouldn’t have been worth the embarrassment on offense and the GM and Coaches eventual firing. It has literally been a decade and you Tebow disciples are still as delusional as ever. Just comical.
He used a 1 game example that Tebow won, to say hes a joke. Clown comment by redbird.
Lol, that was Tebow. Make the defense think you can throw, defense blows coverage, then throw up a wounded duck for a completion.
And he got plenty of shots. Philly and NE. Do you really think that a team would pass on a good QB?
** can’t throw
hmmm starts with a V. VICK….You nvm
It’s a fair contract for a guy that won 2 national titles and 1 Hiesman w/ his old head coach. It’s a familiarity and trust contract. Set the tempo deal. How many new HC’s need to get rid of ‘the other coaches players and bring in their own people’? Every year.
I’d rather have this guy on my team rather than a guy like kaepernick at least Tebow loves and respects this country and won’t sit by disrespecting the national anthem when it plays
Oh god shut up about respecting this country. You wouldnt know respect if it bit you in the @ss.
While your statement is nonsense. It’s also a perfect example of the NFL owners attitude and bias towards certain players. In other words talent means little if the owner, GM, and coach disagree with a players beliefs, politics, & advocacy.
I’d take Kaepernick talent-wise hands down versus the overhyped Tebow.
Tebow accepted the minimum non guarantee contract for a try to prove himself. Kaepernick didn’t. That’s the first issue. If he did and was good and this was happening still then fine you have an argument. He didn’t. He is not a standup man. Tebow did and is a respected man. I dont see where the argument is at.
“Tebow accepted the minimum non guarantee contract.” You make it sound like he had his pick of offers. The only reason he’s in a position to “prove himself” is because Urban Meyer. If the Jags coach was anybody else there wouldn’t be an offer to him.
He’s just not good at pro level football. It’s hard to accept for some people, I get it. But the reality is, not everyone is cut out for the NFL, no matter how good you were in HS or college.
Did I say he was good? And he did accept it. Doesn’t matter if it’s the only offer he had. The other idiot had a low offer too and refused it and claimed racism. Obviously you missed that point. And obviously you can copy and paste your last paragraph for that same idiot too. My whole point is that people complaining that the other idiot didn’t get a chance but Tebow does is not an argument to even make since Tebow was the one willing to accept the low offer. It doesn’t matter if it’s the only one. He accepted it. The other idiot didn’t and then complained.
He’s already the top selling jersey on NFL shop so he’ll get some money there.
The players don’t really earn any money on jersey sales.
How do proceeds from jersey sales get distributed? I can’t find anything about it on line… How much does the team get, how much does the league get, how much does the player get?
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this!
According to the agreement between the NFLPA, the players’ union, and the league, players gets two-thirds of the money made by selling jerseys.
The other third goes to the union — and some of that goes into a pool for all NFL players.
I find it funny when Arm Chair Quarterbacks who weren’t nearly as skilled or talented themselves call Tebow a joke.
The guy made it to the NFL. Hell, he made it to Triple A.
In fact, Tebow has a better career batting average in the minor leagues than Russell Wilson AND Michael Jordan had – and Wilson never had a decade plus gap to fill like Tebow did.
Bottom Line is simple: Tim Tebow is an athlete, and the Tight End (or Fullback) position is where he should’ve switched to from the beginning.
Jacksonville doesn’t have a true Number 1 Tight End – so who knows what’ll happen.
Let me guess…If I buy 2 Tebow jerseys they will give me a Manziel jersey at half price.
If you buy two Manziel jerseys, you can have another jersey of your choice for free!!
Unfortunately, there are reasons why Tebow, Manziel, to name just a couple of QB busts are routinely given several NFL or TV opportunities based on something that has nothing to do with talent or lack of.
900k deal vs starting QB money. That is why Kap isn’t in the league, called pride, ruins a lot of people.
Technically Tebow will get money in the preseason, but not much its regular joe money per week.
Kaps not in the league because he really doesn’t want to play. They gave him his settlement money last year, his hush money, the go away money and many want him to just stay away.
I don’t get the Tebow vs Kap comparison. Tebow is trying to come back as a tight end. He obviously isn’t getting any attention as a QB. Maybe Kap should tryout as a running back. He’s a better runner than passer. Then the comparison might mean something. Tebow should not have to be maligned due to any perceived slights to another player he had nothing to do with.
Plus Tebow didn’t turn down an offer and then complain racism.
Tebow has some skills. Perhaps a ” Gadget” player at best. Mostly he possess leadership and integrity. Maybe with the current NFL there’s a place for that in a locker room?
