The Lions are set to meet with Todd Gurley today (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter). If signed, Gurley will reunite with old pal Jared Goff and pair with fellow Georgia alum D’Andre Swift.
Gurley was a two-time All-Pro while he was with Goff in Los Angeles. As the anchor of the Rams’ ground game, Gurley managed 40 all-purpose touchdowns between ’17 and ’18 while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Unfortunately, his knee injury hampered him in 2018 as he averaged just 3.8 yards per tote and just 6.7 yards per catch.
Gurley hooked on with the Falcons in April, following his Rams release. The deal wasn’t finalized for a while though — the pandemic prevented Gurley from taking his physical until June. Fortunately, he was cleared. Gurley went on to start in all 15 of his games for the Falcons, though he was held to just 3.5 yards per tote with 25 grabs for 164 yards — far below his best work.
At this stage, the Lions aren’t expecting the 2017 or 2018 iteration of Gurley. But, if he’s healthy, he could be a solid and low-cost addition to their backfield.
Deja Vu…Adrian Peterson. Not a bad move if the price is right though.
Guys who can only manage 3.5 yards a carry are a dime a dozen. Get someone who is hungry for their big money contract and can contribute on special teams.
lol probably true, although wouldn’t there be something to be said for the familiarity with Goff and Goff with Gurley? Might be a good signing if cheap for 3rd down passing plays and a back up RB just in the chemistry between the two alone. (that is of course assuming they had some, lol, this I don’t really know)
I’m with you, if it’s cheap then why not? These guys are great to have as a backup, at least he can force in touchdowns as a goal line back, if anything
What a shame. Because of his knee injury in college, he’s shot at age 26. Waste of a potential great career.
This is why it’s bad business to give any RB a big long term contract. Easiest position to find a low cost replacements. Any random mid round draftee would likely be a better performer than Gurley at this point.
Now he ride In The Clown car of the head coach
On a side note, the Lions released jersey numbers for 2021. LB Jamie Collins is switching to #8 so Sewell will be able to keep the #58 he wore at Oregon.
I’ve seen this before. Lions hire a GM and that GM keeps signing FA and trading for players from old team. Maybe it will work this time.
