As you might have heard, the Jaguars signed Tim Tebow earlier this month. According to head coach Urban Meyer & Co., Tebow will be competing for a roster spot as a tight end. But, around the league, executives believe that Tebow is actually being groomed as more of a wildcat quarterback (Twitter link via ESPN’s Dianna Russini).
[POLL: Will Tim Tebow Make Jaguars’ Roster?]
Given Tebow’s background, a Taysom Hill type of role could make sense. A hybrid position also give him a better chance of making the final cut. The Jaguars already have a full house at tight end, with Chris Manhertz, fifth-round rookie Luke Farrell, Tyler Davis, James O’Shaughnessy, and Ben Ellefson on board. Ditto for quarterback, where No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence is backstopped by Gardner Minshew, C.J. Beathard, and Jake Luton. Whether or not Minshew stays, the Jags will carry no more than three QBs on their Week 1 roster with three or four tight ends, max. In theory, Tebow could provide a bit of roster flexibility if he’s slotted as the No. 3 QB/No. 4 TE.
In any event, it’s hard to peg Tebow’s odds of actually making the roster. At last check, ~46% of PFR readers said that Tebow will make the 53-man roster, ~29% predicted he’ll be dropped entirely, and ~25% said he’ll land on the taxi squad. And, in case you’re wondering, Tebow still has the No. 1 selling jersey in the NFL.
I knew Meyer was a madmam already, but this is beyond crazy.
I don’t know, bringing in a player with NFL experience to see what a potential gimmick position could look like during OTA’s, who could be cut at any point with little to no risk? I’m not sure that constitutes being “a madman” or “beyond crazy.” Teams do this all the time with former track athletes and basketball players. This is an actual NFL player. Polarizing and controversial? Yes. Beyond crazy? Perhaps a slight exaggeration.
Polarizing and controversial, no more every other player in the league is.
Tebow is 33 or 34 years old. Nobody brings in someone that old to learn a new position, Urban is using his power to sign his friend. He certainly can, but in a league like the nfl where every little advantage matters, the rest of the league is happy that the Jaguars are essentially using an 89 man roster this off-season.
His jersey selling at number 1 is nice but it’s not a huge profit for an nfl team. It’s great for Tebow and not really anyone else.
So many nfl greats have retired at tebows age. He’s in great shape but he’s never played tight end and now he’s a mid 30s “project” lol.
If he makes the actual team it’ll be an even bigger issue but wasting a 90 man spot is still silly
If he really is brought in as a Wildcat/Taysom Hill-type QB, that’s not completely new to him. It’s how the Jets tried to use him. They weren’t successful, but that doesn’t mean Urban can’t be.
Liberal soy boy hate at its best
It’s a numbers game… I guess we will see
Who’s wondering what the #1 selling jersey is? Do people really wonder about things like this?
Yes some do. just because you don’t does not speak for every reader
Not typically, but the fact he comes in and instantly has the #1 selling jersey does speak to another reason why maybe signing him wasn’t such a bad idea..lol
Wouldn’t be shocked if Shad Khan bought 500k jerseys…
Jersey sales are split between all NFL teams.
The Jaguars were not thinking about merchandise when they signed TT.
Well being that he didnt ‘exist’ up until a few weeks ago, this is found money for the NFL after a year where they had no fans.
id bet its that guy in Tampa
I thought the assumption was he would be a gadget player. Regardless, Tim looks jacked right now. Whether that translates to tight end, we’ll see. I know I’ll be rooting for him
The jags didn’t sign him bc of his football talent…Tebow = interest = ticket and jersey sales = money. All of which the Jags need.
The Jags do not need the money Shad Khan is one of the richer owners in the NFL
Yes I’m sure he got there by investing in losing endeavors too.
What in the heck. We talked about your Asian hate.
People think they are crazy for this but the jags are laughing to the bank right now with the top selling jersey. When he signed his jersey was not just the top selling it was all top 5 spots between the different versions. They got nothing to lose and if anything it takes some attention off Lawrence in camp. Brilliant move cuz it’s no guaranteed money and they are taking it in the meantime.
Money is split between all teams. Union gets 50 percent
It’s the every two years comeback hoopla
for Tebow in a different position or sport. Yawn .
Jags need all the publicity they can get. The fact that they’re getting talked about is proof.
I don’t get the fascination over this guy.
He is an athlete unlike most liberals who drink soy milk all day and then fantasy about women while playing video games on twitch with 15 year old non-binary girls
Alright I don’t get the trolling stuff my dude but that last line made my spit out my drink so I’ll give you that.
Jags marketing strategy: Buy 2 Tebow jerseys and get a free lobotomy.
In other 90-Man Roster News:
Patriots Sign Troy Pumagalli
Bengals Acquire Joe Bachie
Bills Sign Lance Lenoir
Titans Sign Christian DiLauro
Panthers Sign Frank Herron
Seahawks Sign Cam Sutton
OH THE SILLY INSANITY OF IT ALL!!!1!1111!!1obi-wan!!!1!!
I like Troy Fumagalli, actually. One of those fringe players who probably never will be full time starter, but is a great depth piece.
I’m not sure that simply saying “Tayaom Hill” automagically imparts a concise quarterback swapping strategy. The Saints had to do it because Brees had either lost significant arm strength or was injured during his last two years playing (likely both). The Jags just drafted what looks to be the perfect physical model of a quarterback should be in Lawrence, so they do not need necessarily to do that. The Saints also have one of the greatest offensive minds that we’ve seen planning the offense and a similarly great offensive mind on the field in Brees to set up the strategy for when Hill was used. It’s not as if they just threw Hill in whenever they felt like it at any moment without some kind of pre-planned strategy.
I don’t dislike Tebow in the slightest (what people forget is that he has a winning record as a starter and a playoff win, which despite his obvious limitations deserves to mentioned), but he has not played in some time. Hill probably is about as threatening as Tebow was as a passer as a starter statiscally, but his accuracy and motion are significantly better, which makes him a more legitimate threat to throw than Tebow when he comes in for plays. The Jags very well may use Tebow as a swap in quarterback (and I expect them to), but it won’t be like Taysom Hill. He’ll certainly run more even than Hill did, but the plays will look different ( and Lawrence’s own running ability will affect that-as well as the Jags’ significantly worse offensive line). It’ll just be an alternate quarterback, and I don’t believe that using Hill’s name as a byword for that defines the role very well.
All of this Tebow “Hype” allows Lawrence to fly under the radar.
Exactly. I actually think that’s the point
