It’s officially official. On Thursday, the Jaguars confirmed that they’ve signed former University of Florida superstar Tim Tebow. Tebow, who made his name at quarterback, will attempt to return to football as a tight end.
“‘I want to thank the Jaguars for the opportunity to compete and earn the chance to be part of this team,’ Tebow said. “I know it will be a challenge, but it is a challenge I embrace. I am dedicated to taking the direction of our coaching staff and learning from my teammates. I appreciate everyone’s support as I embark on this new journey.”
Tebow hasn’t played in a real NFL game since the 2012 season. His last pro football stint was with the Eagles during the 2015 preseason. He’s since attempted a pro baseball career, spending time in the minor leagues with the Mets, which he just recently retired from.
All in all, Tebow’s NFL career spans three seasons, two with the Broncos and one with the Jets. As a first-round rookie in Denver, Tebow threw for 654 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 227 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. In 2011, Tebow played in 14 games and passed for 1,729 yards and 12 scores, plus 660 yards and six TDs rushing. Tebow logged a playoff win that year, but he wasn’t necessarily the driver behind their success.
Now, the two-time national champion at Florida will reunite with Urban Meyer and try to make the Jaguars as a tight end. For what it’s worth, the Mets’ minor league affiliates listed the 6-foot-3 Tebow at a TE-ready 245 pounds. The Jaguars now roster six TEs in total: Chris Manhertz, fifth-round pick Luke Farrell, Tyler Davis, James O’Shaughnessy, Ben Ellefson, and Tebow.
I don’t have a problem with the signing, nor w/ them drafting the RB in the 1st round. The way I see it, Urban has a confidant in the locker room & Trevor has a friend in the locker room as well. Both Tim & Travis have other roles for the organization.
yeah I mean they have all of two TE with NFL pass catching experience on their roster. likely he gets cut, but worth a look if just for a fun storyline to follow.
Tebow became a legend in Gainesville, I lived in Tampa in 2009-2010 and you could buy Tebow jerseys in gas stations in the boondocks, the love for him in Florida is real and the Jaguars want to get eyes on their organization and people in the seats, I don’t think Tebow will do anything but this is a smart move by the jags for the Jacksonville and Gainesville residents…anyone who has any other opinion on it doesn’t understand business, it means nothing except extra dollars for the jags
100% agree!!! I grew up down in south Florida, Florida loves Tebow! This will sell tickets and that’s what they want
The easiest way to market a product is to improve it and if your opinion is that Tebow won’t do anything then how does that make the team better? From a business perspective this is your typical short sighted move in an attempt to hoodwink the public.
I live in Jax, we can’t be hoodwinked because we know the team has sucked for the past 20 years!
i mean, is he making it worse?
He only needs 1 season to qualify for the lifetime pension and health benefits. He is not qualified to be on an NFL field.
he’s a stud athlete…a good qb? No…..not sure all the hate against him. Yes it’s gimmicky to be signing him but he’s still athletically gifted none the less
But not suited to be on an nfl football field, it’s been proven over and over again and in multiple sports. When is his tryout for the knicks?
Is he really a stud athlete or are you remembering him from his Florida days? None of us has seen him play football at 33 to know if he can still play.
he’d still a physical specimen and was playing professional sports as recently as 2019.
A stud athlete that hit .163 in the minors
really only needs 3 or 4 games on the active roster and then he gets the pension.
If that’s true, then the OT from Tenn is set! Singing bonus from his 1st round slot & pension.
If he’s credited with three seasons of service, his minimum contract salary value is $920,000. In the big picture, that shouldn’t really have a great effect on their salary cap, but it’s often an excuse to cut veterans.
Why use a picture of Tebow on the Eagles when he never actually made the 52-man roster?
He didn’t make the 53 man roster either!
That too!
Wentz looks jacked in that photo.
Tebow haters punching air right now.
Bro, you’re defending Al Bundy. Looks good on ya, m8.
People seem to be thinking that just cause they signed him that he’s made the time. They signed him and he has to make the team, it’s not a guarantee.
its the Meyer effect. they think that because he’s Urban’s guy that he’ll convince the FO to let him remain as the 53rd man. I don’t know if Urban even deserves this much credit, but i think he’d only go as far as to guarantee Tebow a look.
Good! He deserves a second chance. Hopefully the lock room is understanding.
It’s really good for Tim Tebow to be able to restart his NFL career but if he deserves another chance doesn’t Colin Kaepernick?
I don’t think this has any relation to Kaepernick because Tebow is trying out for TE, not QB. There are a lot more TE spots on the roster than QB spots, and TE is a much less important position.
and he’ll be making much less then Kaep’s reported contract demands.
By a lot more do you mean one?
Keep him around as a nicking TE and a FB. Shoot for another top 5 pick so that in 2 years you can make that playoff run
