The Eagles did not use one of their 2021 draft picks on a quarterback, but they will add at least one via undrafted free agency. Former Wake Forest and Georgia passer Jamie Newman will sign with Philadelphia, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.
Newman transferred from Wake Forest to Georgia but did not end up playing for the Bulldogs, opting out of last season. He worked a the Demon Deacons’ starter in 2019, throwing 26 touchdown passes and averaging 7.9 yards per attempt. The 6-foot-4 passer did participate in the Senior Bowl, however. Scouts Inc. graded Newman 184th among this year’s prospects.
Philly not selecting a quarterback clears the way for Jalen Hurts. While ownership was believed to be behind Hurts receiving a true opportunity this season — rather than being pushed in a quarterback competition — it was somewhat surprising the Eagles did not select a QB. Newman will join Hurts and Joe Flacco, whom the Eagles signed this offseason, on the team’s depth chart.
Although five quarterbacks went in this draft’s top 15 picks, only 10 were selected in total. Of the Senior Bowl participants, Newman joined Arkansas’ Feleipe Franks in not being drafted.
Always need another QB in camp to help spread the ball around.
Jameis Winston 2.0
Surprised a team didn’t select Newman in the 7th round. Most pre draft assessments had him going in the 5th round area. He’s definitely going to need some developing but thought he do great as a back up to Russell Wilson
Newman should stick as QB3 since Hurts and Flacco are the only other qb’s on the roster and none were drafted.
The UDFA’s seem to be an area where the Eagles do well.
Yeah, they do ok with UDFAs, it’s just rounds 1-7 where they continually fail…
I was very high on Newman last year coming out of Wake Forest, thought he had a lot of potential. I thought that the transfer to Georgia was going to put him in the running for the Heisman.
Rumor had it that Jamie was upset that Georgia actually brought in competition and he was under the impression that he was the granted incumbent. He took the I am going to concentrate on the draft route. Avoiding competition is not exactly a trait you look for in a QB. Going undrafted was not really a surprise. Shame
Now that Howie has Newman, will he pursue Seinfeld, Costanza and Kramer?
Jerrrrrrrryyyyyyyy…..
