The 49ers auditioned Brandon Marshall on Thursday (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter). The former Broncos linebacker (not to be confused with the longtime NFL receiver) is looking to return to the field after a few years out of the league.
Marshall, 32 in September, was a key player for one of this century’s defining defenses. He started all 19 games the 2015 Super Bowl champion Broncos played and was a five-season first-stringer in Denver. In the 2016 offseason, Marshall inked an $8MM-per-year extension to stay in Denver. However, injuries plagued the veteran linebacker for much of that deal. The Broncos released Marshall in 2019. He then hooked on with the Raiders, but that didn’t last long thanks to an injury.
The veteran made the rounds last year, including a tryout with the Texans. To date, he has 418 tackles, 28 tackles for a loss, nine quarterback hits, 6.5 sacks, 21 passes defensed, two interceptions, and four forced fumbles to his credit.
Never hurts to have extra linebackers
Then Niner way. Buy low risk low aim high fill holes
Marshall was a good cover backer for a long time in Denver, but he was always at his best with another more run tackling oriented player working in tandem with him (Danny Trevathan, most notably). He lost a step significantly in the year or so after Trevathan left, and his last years in Denver and Oakland were not too great. He’s always been a good leader and good presence in the locker room, and good at organizing the defense, but I’m not sure how much more we will see from him on the field in my opinion.
LOL the niners are in good shape at receiver I don’t get the reasoning for bringing in an old washed up diva with a serious attitude problem into a good locker room. Even at a minimum salary I wouldn’t hire this guy.
Reading is Fun Da Mental.
It’s Brandon Marshall the LB, not the WR, that the Niners are considering …
I thought it was the same game just like Brandon Jacobs is going to play another position u know? Whats the odds of two brandon marshalls being out there that is almost impossible.
If the price was right why didn’t the Bears who need a Backup for Danny T & Reqaun S we had a good one with Mea teo from SD but he wasn’t resign now we got Woods and a guy with a name no one can pronounce. Marshall would be good and the minimum salary wouldn’t hurt .
