Trey Lance conducted his second pro day Monday in Fargo, North Dakota. A few notable teams attended the event. While previous reports indicated the 49ers, Falcons and Broncos were to have personnel at the showcase, the Patriots were there as well.
The Pats sent Eliot Wolf and director of player personnel Dave Ziegler to observe Lance, Albert Breer of SI.com notes. The Panthers and Bears are not believed to have sent representatives to watch the North Dakota State prospect throw this time, Breer adds, though both teams were at his first pro day. Washington, which has been linked to Lance recently, did have a contingent present, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com tweets.

Lance ran 49ers drills at the workout. The idea of working in Kyle Shanahan‘s offense appeals to Lance, Justin Fields and Mac Jones, according to Breer. Lance and Fields opted to go through with second pro days in order for Shanahan and John Lynch to be on-hand. Lance has worked with QB guru John Beck in recent weeks and, per Graziano, did so at Shanahan’s request (Twitter link). San Francisco’s staff gave Beck a set of drills for Lance to work on during the leadup to his second pro day. Shanahan coached Beck when he served as Washington’s OC in the early 2010s.
The Panthers sent their top brass to Lance’s first pro day March 12; Matt Rhule, GM Scott Fitterer and OC Joe Brady made that trip, Breer adds. The Bears sent Matt Nagy to watch Fields’ second pro day last week, with Washington having director of college scouting Tim Gribble at that event. Nagy and GM Ryan Pace made the trip to watch Lance last month but were not believed to be at Lance’s second throwing session, which, like Fields’ workout sequel, was closed to media.
Denver OC Pat Shurmur was at both Fields and Lance’s second sessions, and while the Broncos are not a lock to draft one of this year’s top five passers, teams believe they are lurking as as stealth QB suitor, according to Breer. The Broncos are set to pick ninth. One of those QBs could well fall to them, but the Broncos have also been linked to a possible trade-up for a quarterback. The team last drafted a first-round quarterback in 2016 (Paxton Lynch) but has never selected one in the top 10. If the 49ers take Jones, the Broncos would stand to be in play for Lance or Fields.
Thanks for the update, we’ve been starved for Lance news around here. Also nice to see working in the 49ers offense appeals to him, I’m sure it would also if they didn’t pick until much later on.
I know I’m a lone wolf on this one but I think this kid is going to end up the best QB in this draft by 2023. If he ends up the 4th or 5th QB off the board it will be a travesty in hindsight for a lot of teams. I think SF should draft him. I can’t believe this talk of Mac Jones at number 3. Bollocks.
And I think he’s by far the biggest reach on the board. Nice kid, good tools, I pull for those outside of the P5 so I won’t call quality of competition into question as much as I will quantity of competition. Just 2 years ago not one FBS school thought he could eventually be a starting QB at their school within his 5 year college career. Then he redshirts at a DIAA school, plays 1 season and lights it up, plays one game into the next season and doesn’t do so well and he’s now looking at going #3 overall? Watching him play in that offense, he got great results, but I didn’t see the throws into coverage, the reads, etc. he would have to make leading an NFL squad. I wish the kid well, but I just think what teams are giving up to pick where he is projected is a humongous gamble for their franchise.
Falcons need to go Pitts. And they hopfully a RB in round 2.
Trey Fields, Justin Lance, I don’t care who it is, or what combination, nothing will stop the San Francisco 49ers from selecting the GOAT McCorkle Jones.
It would be massive letdown for Lance to work with a coach because Shanahan asked him to, only for Shanahan to skip on him on draft day. San Fran does have a starter already in Garappolo who give them time to sit a developmental QB likeLance, but I don’t think they traded up to three to pick someone who’d likely be available at ten or lower.
Would work out well to have him come in and sit, but the pundits are somehow saying Lance is the most ready plug and play QB after Lawrence, which I don’t see at all. I too think he’ll need to come in and sit a while.
I like all three prospects; Fields, Jones, Lance.
Fields shows he can really shoot on the run.
Lance can throw the long ball and power thru linebackers.
Jones exhibits pocket awareness and quickly gets rid of ball.
I think Shanahan will select Jones because he unloads quickly. Jones’s eyes dart to 2nd and 3rd reads and he zips it. He’s not so slow that he can’t run the bootleg. Jones has a better feel of where every player is – on the field. He senses a rusher coming from behind.
Don’t get me wrong. I like Fields and Lance. But these guys who run with the ball don’t stay durable for long and we could see Josh Rosen at the helm.
If the choice is Jones, why did the Shanahan and Lynch trade so much draft capital to get him? Were they worried that Belichick would trade up to grab him first?
Why did Lynch and Co. trade so much draft capital to select Jones at 3? A report by Matt Maiocco suggests that the Matt Ruehle and the Panthers at selection 8 were very interested in Jones at the Senior Bowl and might have moved up to get him. I think the Falcons drafting at selection 4 would also have been interested in Jones.
All this doesn’t mean that Mac Jones won’t be a bust. But it does mean that he has the highest floor of the three QB’s, thereby having least chance for busting. Furthermore, the Niners can get rid of Jimmy G before the 2021 season and regain some draft capital spent on Jones.
There’s also possibility that the Lynch and Shanahan can trade down and still get Jones while recouping some lost draft capital. If the Niners know that the Falcons want Lance or Fields at selection 4, they can trade down with the Bengals (5), Dolphins (6) (again) and Lions (7) and still get Jones.
